of Health Professions offers two online Health Information Management
degree programs — making it ideal for the working student, single parent
and the independent learner.

Health Information Technicians are the Patient Health Information Experts
Students can pursue one or two degrees: the eight-semester associate’s degree or the
associate’s degree followed by the bachelor’s degree.
Students learn to:
Online Associate of Science in Health Information Technology
Associate’s degree students acquire medical coding and billing skills, as well as in-depth
knowledge about patient confidentiality, technology and health records.
•Courses are online, but students receive weekly hands-on clinical experience, choosing from more than 100 clinical sites across the state, plus a two-week internship their senior year.
•Graduates are qualified to take the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) national certification examination. UAMS students have typically enjoyed a high pass rate.
Online Bachelor of Science in Health Information Administration
Bachelor’s degree students gain additional expertise and administrative skills that support
health care planning, resource allocation and executive decision-making.
• The part-time (7 semesters) or full-time
(4 semesters) program is ideal for
health information technicians with an
associate’s degree from UAMS or
another accredited school.
• Students gain valuable professional
practice training close to home in the
many hospitals and other health care
agencies that work with UAMS.
• Organize and manage health information data, ensuring data quality,
accuracy, accessibility and security.
• Code and categorize patient information
for insurance reimbursement, medical
teams and for databases and registries.
• Maintain patients’ medical and treatment histories.
• Ensure adherence to federal patient
privacy and security protections of
electronic medical records.
