The Spaghetti Tower Challenge
‘Learning leadership and team work through action’
Purpose of the
challenge…
Each team will
need
The lemonade day spaghetti tower challenge has multiple outcomes in mind:
1. Students practice resourcefulness and creativity in building their stands
2. Students practice teamwork and leadership
3. Students have a fun experience that encourages them to tackle problem solving in a
fun way.
-
About 20 spaghetti sticks
1 marshmallow
4 pieces of tape
Large paper or newspaper for floor or table space
Directions:
Set up stations on newspaper or table paper that have the marshmallow, spaghetti sticks and
tape available to students. Assign groups of 4-8 students to each station.
You can share the following instructions.
“At the station you will find spaghetti, a marshmallow, and tape. We are going to count to three, you’re going to
start to build something tall using only the materials at your station. If you break a spaghetti, you can still use it to
make your tower. The goal of this activity is for your team to build the tallest tower of all the groups (without it
falling over).
Recommended time to allot the students can be anywhere from 7 to 10 minutes.
Alternatives:
Build the “Best” tower: the ambiguity in this may be challenging to students but allows the instructor room
to further develop the student’s creativity.
