Tobeginwithweneedtoregisterthatallmanuresarenotcreatedequal…themakeupofcaNleandpoultryare
wet, nitrogen rich and great fer:lizers - horse manure falls short on many levels, and is compounded when it is
mixed70/30withwoodfibre-themainsourceofhorsebedding.
So should horse manure be called horse manure? Or should it be called “Used horse bedding from stalls, that
containsfecalmaterandurine”…that'sforanotherpaper.
Currentlythereareanes:mated10,000,000horsesinNorthAmericaand59,000,000horsesworldwideandwhen
stabledindoors,eachhorseproducesapproximately1tonnepermonthofusedbedding.Currentdisposalmethods
includespreadingonpasturesandcropsorcompos:ngintosoilforfarmandgardenuse,however,:ppingfeecosts
arerising,andinmanyjurisdic:onsoutdoorstorageandlandfilldisposalisnolongerpermiNed.
There are many industry’s environmental concerns; such as contaminant leaching into waterways including
phosphorushotspots,odourcontrolandmethaneoff-gassing.Nottomen:onthesmellofammonia,dustandthe
blackflypopula:onsinthestableswhichresultsinpoorhorseandhumanhealth.
Therearenumerousdisposalcompaniesbuttheyarerunningoutofdisposalop:ons.Thepastop:onsofdumping
intolandfillsorstockpilingonfarmsareathingofthepastinmostjurisdic:ons.Usedhorsebeddingisalsonotwell
receivedbytheagriculturalcommunityasitdoesnotsupplyalotofnutrientcontentduetothenitrogencapturing
natureofrobngwoodbasedmanure.Alsorecentagriculturalrulechangesreduceoutdoormanurestoragetoa
maximum length of two weeks and so wai:ng months for the spring manure-spreading season is no longer an
acceptable solu:on. It is becoming obvious that there are less disposal solu:on available and disposal costs are
goingupasNorthAmericanandEuropeanhorseownersmustgofartherafieldtofinddisposalsolu:ons.
GSAConclusion:
Theseresourcesshowhorsebeddingheavyinsawdust,&shavingswitharound20%-30%horsefeces(theaverage
forhighendbarnsandracetracks)isnotagoodsoilammender.Thewoodfibrelignumdoesnotbreakdownand
therefore without process of compos:ng and adding nitrogen and oxygen - it will not breakdown and be
abenefittofarmland.Whilethehorsemanureitselfisagoodfer:lizer,thesawdustandwoodshavingsarenot
crop friendly. That's because when wood breaks down in the soil, it requires nitrogen and a nitrogen deficiency
occurs,whichstuntsthegrowthofcrops. UsedbeddingleiunaNendedcancausemethaneoffgassing,leaching
andphosphoroushotspotsleadingtodiseases,flies,andenvironmentalhazards.

Horseshowever,arekeptmoreaspetsandinsmallernumbersthancows.Theaveragesizeofadairyherdnow
being around 120. So whilst there is less horse manure about, the fact is that the average horse will produce
between8and9tonsofmanureayear.
Aliverystablewithjust6horseswillbeproducingbegenera:ngaround50tonsayearofwaste.That'salotof
horsemanure!Nowifthosehorseswereinthewild,roamingacrossmanyacresofland,thedroppingswouldjust
rotdownandbecomeincorporatedintothesoil,returningfer:litytopasture.However,ourliverystablehasbuta
fewexercisepaddocksandthestableitself.

NitrogenDeficiencyinFreshManure
Themanureandurineismixedwitheitherwoodshavingsorstrawandcleanedoutintoapile,oUenalongwith
neatdroppingscollectedfromthefield.Whilethehorsemanureitselfisagoodfer2lizer,thesawdustandwood
shavings are not crop friendly. That's because when wood breaks down in the soil, it requires nitrogen and a
nitrogendeficiencyoccurs,whichstuntsthegrowthofcrops.
To combat this problem, a nitrogen fer:lizer could be added to the soil aier horse manure is spread on it; or a
nitrogenfer:lizercouldbeaddedtothehorsemanureandsawdustorwoodshavingsmixturebeforebeingadded
tothesoil.
Addinginorganicfer:lizertomanureisreallywastefulsincetheansweristocompostthemanurepile.Oieninjust
afewmonthsbutcertainlylessthanayear,thebeddingmaterialshavebrokendownandthemanurecompostwill
addnetnutrientsaswellasvaluablehumustothesoil.
Thebeddingpresentinthemanureisagood"brown"componenttocompostandalongwithanyothermaterials
addedtothecompostpile,completelybreakdownandbecomewhatmanypeoplecall"blackgold."
