GLOBE Growing Leaders on Behalf of the Environment The Nature Conservancy Report for the GLOBE Sixth Year Anniversary Celebration Worldwide Office, Arlington, Virginia June 3, 2014 GLOBE Program Contact: VonGretchen C. Nelson • GLOBE Program Director [email protected] • (803) 316-6789 1 Mission The GLOBE (Growing Leaders on Behalf of the Environment) internship program is designed to attract young people from a variety of socio-cultural experiences, and the program matches qualified and enthusiastic college students and recent graduates with various environment and conservation-focused internships suited to their areas of study. Overview The Nature Conservancy’s GLOBE program hires college students, graduate students, and recent graduates to fill paid internship positions with teams across the organization during a 10-week summer internship period. This is a unique opportunity for students and recent graduates to bridge the gap between what is learned in the classroom and on-theground work in the world of conservation. Interns are selected based on eligibility, qualifications, and experience, and the GLOBE program offers internships in many disciplines, including science, marketing, government relations, technology, finance, and fundraising. Interns begin the program with an orientation retreat during which Conservancy leaders and interns gather to share educational and professional experiences. Once on the job, each intern receives a high-quality experience, a committed supervisor and mentor, and a relevant project that provides him/her with additional skills and training. GLOBE interns benefit from an outstanding network of professionals to draw on in future years. We have hired over 240 interns since 2008 and are projected to hire 40 interns in 2014. We will continue to expand the GLOBE internship program, thereby contributing to the diversity, size, and effectiveness of the global conservation workforce. “From the first day of the [GLOBE] internship, I could tell that my summer would be about meeting new people and learning. The thing I remember most about orientation was what Congressman John Lewis said [to our intern group]: “We all must do our part." In that moment, I realized that in order to accomplish the vision of The Nature Conservancy, we must set aside our differences to achieve our goals…” -Jasmine White, Human Resources Diversity Outreach and Web Design GLOBE Intern, 2013 2 GLOBE by the Numbers The GLOBE program is in its 6th year of operation and has hired over 240 interns since 2008. The GLOBE program has placed interns in 45 states and 7 countries where TNC works. The GLOBE program partners with over 240 colleges and universities and visits 65 institutions annually for career fairs, presentations, diversity training sessions, interviews, and informational meetings. At present, the GLOBE program maintains 6 sponsorships and/ or partnerships with corporations and universities. These sponsors and partners include Accenture, Delta Airlines, Middlebury College, and Emory University, among others. Over 10 GLOBE alumni have worked for The Nature Conservancy in full-time positions following their internships, in a variety of positions in Conservation, Science, Marketing, Policy, Government Relations, External Affairs, and Human Resources. Summary of Achievements and Challenges The main goal of the GLOBE program is to provide each intern with a high-quality experience that enhances the intern’s skills and knowledge and also contributes to the conservation work of the Conservancy. Tangible results of the success and quality of the GLOBE program include: The GLOBE program’s recent corporate partnerships with companies including Accenture and Delta Airlines; GLOBE’s fruitful partnerships with institutions of higher learning, such as Middlebury College, Yale University, and Emory University; In addition, Georgia State University presented The Nature Conservancy with the Panther Prep Award in 2012-2013, recognizing the GLOBE program as the best internship program in the country! In 2014, The Nature Conservancy is featured as a Top 25 Employer of University of Michigan, School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE) students. Challenges and needs facing the GLOBE program include: Support from professional Marketing and Philanthropy Representatives; Summer housing or housing stipends for all GLOBE interns; Increased opportunities for GLOBE interns to be hired as full-time employees of The Nature Conservancy. 3 GLOBE Intern Profiles: Apple Loveless, Corporate Engagement GLOBE intern from the summer of 2013, worked on a variety of projects focusing on The Nature Conservancy’s burgeoning corporate partnership and engagement opportunities, which she found to be rewarding and exciting work. “Partially controlled enthusiasm is a phrase that sums up my internship experience at The Nature Conservancy’s Worldwide Office (WO). I arrived in DC under the assumption that interning at WO would be a highly strategic move for both my personal and professional development. Nine weeks later, I can confirm that I made a great choice.” “During my short tenure at WO, I have amassed a wide foundation of knowledge centered on the Conservancy’s Valuing Nature mission. Working with my team on a multitude of projects revealed the immense difficulties in articulating the need for business partnerships in exploring the developing, and often controversial, science of valuing environmental resources and the services they provide. Whether I was plunging through case studies… [or] performing the due diligence required for identifying corporate prospects, I developed a more pragmatic understanding for the range of uncertainties facing such multi-stakeholder partnerships and an even greater appreciation for those pioneering the way forward.” Apple is a 2014 graduate of Duke University Master’s Program where she studied Water Resource Management. Joshua Carrera, who participated in the GLOBE program for three summers (2009, 2010, and 2012), attended the momentous Rio+20 international sustainable development conference located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as part of his 2012 internship. Joshua is a 2014 graduate of the master’s program at Colorado State University where he studied Conservation Leadership. “My biggest take-away from the experience was that trying to find consensus around solving our most pressing environmental and social problems is not an easy task and that embracing complexity is key to coming up with realistic solutions. Attending Rio+20 at such an early age in my life will be a huge benefit for years to come. I already have a global perspective on many issues, and this conference has pushed me to continue focusing on the bigger picture. I owe many thanks to Krista Singleton and the rest of The Nature Conservancy delegation team for mentoring me throughout the process.” 4 Program Evaluation Measures GLOBE has actively measured program outcomes and impact through face to face interactions, online surveys, and written surveys since 2010. These evaluations consistently demonstrate that GLOBE contributes professional and skilled interns into the growing global workforce. All GLOBE intern participants keep online journals and complete a final report to detail their specific job related functions, trainings, and mentorship experiences and help them reflect on how GLOBE has shaped their personal understanding of conservation and future career choices. GLOBE interns also participate in a group project that fosters team collaboration and team orientation. The project exposes the interns to cultural differences, effective communication, time management, and project management. In 2014, GLOBE completed its first longitudinal alumni survey, polling interns who participated in the program over the past five years. The results show that GLOBE alumni are active conservationists in their personal and professional lives. Some highlights of the report are as follows: 90% of alumni respondents reported an increase interest in environmental issues, 94% had an increased awareness of conservation career paths, and 84% identify themselves as environmentalist. 44% of our GLOBE alumni are currently working in the environmental sector. Compared to the national averages, the differences are clear – 64% of GLOBE alumni majored in science vs. 6% of the national average, 35% of GLOBE alumni volunteer for environmental causes vs. 3% of the national average, 73% of GLOBE alumni believe loss of natural areas is “extremely serious” vs. 22% of the national average. The Nature Conservancy has hired ten former GLOBE interns into full time positions throughout the organization. “The GLOBE program gave me a glimpse into the different conservation careers that are possible! Coming out of a liberal arts college, I had a diverse interest in the environmental field and I got introduced into this topic through the marketing department at TNC. Environmental education is important in reaching a large audience and I learned just how important the next generation youth is in protecting our land and water.” –Julia Fiala, Nature Rocks GLOBE Intern, 2013 5 Community Outreach and Communications Community Outreach Beginning in 2014, the GLOBE program will add community outreach and volunteering to the array of activities completed by GLOBE interns throughout their 10-week internships. GLOBE interns will join community service projects based on their various work locations that will benefit local communities and the environment. Examples of the type of volunteer work and the many volunteer organizations the GLOBE interns will be engaging with include: Facilitating city park cleanups with San Antonio Parks & Recreation in San Antonio, Texas; Volunteering in the Capital Area Food Bank’s local garden in Washington D.C.; Restoring sand dunes with the Pacific Whale Foundation in Maui, Hawaii. Awards and University Partnerships The GLOBE program has attracted attention and recognition in recent years for its efforts to strengthen and diversify the next generation of conservation leaders. Beginning in 2011, the GLOBE program pioneered partnerships with Middlebury College and Emory University. Each year, Conservancy donors support Middlebury College students as they participate in the GLOBE program, transforming their classroom learning into real world environmental field experience. Emory University funds graduate students to work as GLOBE interns in the Conservancy’s international programs, furthering the Conservancy’s commitment to sustainability both in the United States and abroad. In 2013, Georgia State University awarded The Nature Conservancy its Panther Prep Award for 2012-2013, recognizing the GLOBE program as the best internship program in the country. Additionally, GLOBE began a connection with the Bryon Fellowship in 2014. The GLOBE program nominates approximately ten interns per year for this fellowship opportunity. The Bryon Fellowship is an interdisciplinary course and retreat associated with Yale University that focuses on sustainable community development and leadership. The Bryon Fellowship engages participants using place-based learning and collaboration. Rocky Mountain Sustainability and Science Network (RMSSN) is also a recent partner of the GLOBE program and GLOBE interns have served as both participants and mentors in the RMSSN program. Next year, The Nature Conservancy will host RMSSN students for the first time at a Conservancy preserve in Wyoming. 6 Corporate Partnerships In 2013, the GLOBE program forged a partnership with Accenture, a global management consulting firm. Accenture conducts diversity and professional development training sessions with all GLOBE interns during the annual orientation event in Arlington, Virginia. Accenture continues to provide interns with helpful trainings throughout their internships, with the aim of honing interns’ professional skills and growing the capacity of the GLOBE program. Another key corporate partner is Delta Airlines. The majority of GLOBE interns fly to their internship locations – which range from rural Montana to Hawaii – after the annual orientation retreat in Arlington, Virginia. This air travel is made possible by the Delta SkyWish program, which has contributed 2,350,000 travel miles to the GLOBE program to date. For many GLOBE interns, flying to their internship locations marks their first experience with air travel. This experience would not be possible without the assistance of Delta Airlines. Communications The GLOBE program has a strong presence on three major social media networks – LinkedIn (currently 372 members), Twitter (currently 157 members), and Facebook (currently 180 members). The aim of these networks is not only to communicate the success of the GLOBE program to potential partners and interns but also to allow current and past GLOBE interns to remain in contact with one another. Mentoring within the GLOBE program occurs with the intern’s official mentor and also with his/ her peers. The GLOBE alumni network is therefore very strong and promises to maintain young environmental professionals’ connections for a long time. The Process During the application process, students and recent graduates from many colleges and universities throughout the country and around the world, apply to specific GLOBE internships. Applicants are then interviewed both by the GLOBE program managers and the hiring managers of the teams for which the interns will work. Before the students’ application process begins, managers and programs that would like to host an intern submit a proposal, outlining both the proposed project and their willingness to commit to an intern’s development. This is a competitive process, with approximately 50% of the proposals approved. Managers are asked to provide information for a full ten week project, suggest a dedicated mentor, and outline their experience hosting or working with interns in their current or previous roles. During the fall recruitment season GLOBE staff members and other TNC employees visit 65 colleges and universities throughout the country. All GLOBE positions are posted by October 1st of each year and are available for three months on the Conservancy’s career site on www.nature.org/careers. 7 Over 100 interns typically apply to each GLOBE position annually, but only the top five applicants are interviewed for each position. The interview process runs through late January and the entire month of February. Applicants are notified by March of each year of their acceptance into the GLOBE program. Interns then convene in late May/ early June of each year for the annual orientation, held at The Nature Conservancy’s Worldwide Office in Arlington, Virginia. During orientation, interns are able to network, learn about each other’s internship assignments, receive necessary trainings and instructions, participate in fun and useful diversity and icebreaker exercises, go on a group field trip and/ or outing, and engage with Conservancy leaders during a variety of events to provide them with additional knowledge and professional skills. Both supervisors and mentors participate in discussions prior to the start of the internship intended to provide them with clear expectations about their role and ensure that they have the support needed to fulfill their role effectively. (See Appendix B for a complete list of former interns, supervisors and mentors) Over the course of the internship, GLOBE program staff work closely with those interns who are in the process of looking for full time employment, providing coaching on resume and cover letter writing and interviewing skills. The GLOBE program staff also work with the interns to identify specific positions within the Conservancy for which they might be qualified and contact hiring managers to help them through the recruiting process. This assistance frequently continues after the internship ends; we see the relationship with each intern as a long-term commitment. After the 10-week GLOBE internship ends, interns stay in touch with their supervisors, mentors, and fellow interns via the GLOBE program’s robust social media presence. Networks such as Facebook and LinkedIn allow interns to network within the organization, remain current with happenings at the Conservancy, and keep in touch with fellow young environmental professionals. At present, the majority of the GLOBE program’s 200+ alumni are actively following The Nature Conservancy and the GLOBE program online, www.nature.org/aboutus/globe. 8 GLOBE Demographics N/A - Candidate did not self identify 02 - Black/African American 04 – Asian 07- Native Hawaiian / Pacific Islander 09 – Mexican American/Chicano 11 – Other – Hispanic 13 – Black/White of African descent 3% 1% 0% 8% 01 – White/Caucasian 03 – Hispanic/Latino 05 – Native American/ Alaska Native 08 – Central American 10 – Other – Asian 12 - South American 14 – Middle Eastern 6% 6% 3% 26% 14% 27% 6% GLOBE: Cultural Demographics 200 150 100 Count 50 0 Female Male GLOBE: Gender Demographics 9 Financial Summary: GLOBE internships are 10 weeks in length, and the program is managed and coordinated by Human Resources staff in cooperation with the local hiring managers. What I have found so far in The Nature Conservancy is a group of friendly, open people who are passionate in the field and not afraid of a little hard work. I have come to find that working here means... doing anything and everything necessary to fulfill our mission to protect and restore the Minnesota grasslands…” – Ian McLaughlin, Grassland Restoration GLOBE Intern, 2013 10 Appendix A GLOBE University Relations Alabama A&M University Alabama State University Alcorn State University Allegheny College American University (Law) Antioch University New England Arizona State University Asian-Pacific American Law Students Assoc Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School (Law) Atlanta University Center Consortium, Inc.
