PLEASE STAND FOR PRAYER!
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

• Problem Solving Exercise Book: pg 5 #13 3
Do Now
1. You're sitting still in your chair. Are you moving? Explain your answer in at least two sentences.
2. What do we mean when we say that motion is relative? What is every motion usually relative to?
3. Is acceleration in physics simply an increase in speed? 4
Scalars & Vectors
Scalar Vector
Distance Displacement
Speed
Velocity
Acceleration
Magnitude (A number)
Direction ( Up, down, negative, positive, north south, etc.)
5
Einstein was correct...
Everything is relative...when talking about motion.
**Unless stated otherwise, when we discuss the speeds of things is our environment, we mean speed with respect to the surface of the Earth.***
6
Displacement
Displacement how far something travels in a given direction.
The SI unit for distance and displacement is the meter. m
• Can be positive or negative depending on the direction
• positive = east, negative = west
• positive = north, negative= south
7
Speed and Velocity
Speed is how fast something is moving.
Velocity is how fast something is moving in a given direction.
8
The SI for speed and velocity is meters per second.
Average velocity can be positive or negative depending on final and initial position. But speed is always positive.
