Possessive Pronouns / Adjectives Possessive Pronouns • Possessive pronouns are used in English to avoid repeating information. Example: This pencil is my pencil, not your pencil. (Sounds repetitive) This pencil is mine, not yours. (Mine and yours are possessive pronouns) • Possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns sometimes are confusing because most of them are very similar in form. Possessive adjective Possessive Pronouns My Mine Your Yours His His Her Hers Its Its Our Ours Their Theirs Meaning mine el mío / la mía los míos / las mías ours el nuestro / la nuestra los nuestros / las nuestras yours (familiar) el tuyo / la tuya los tuyos / las tuyas yours (familiar) el vuestro / la vuestra los vuestros / las vuestras his, hers el suyo / la suya los suyos / las suyas theirs el suyo / la suya los suyos / las suyas Describes a noun Takes the place of a noun Examples: My house is big (MY is an adjective, describes the house ) Yours is small (YOURS is a pronoun, takes the place of noun “house”) Another easy way to remember how to use them : Possessive Pronoun: Possessive Adjective: Possessive Adjective + Noun My cat is small. Her dog is black. Their brother plays soccer. Noun + Possessive Pronoun The cat is mine. The black dog is hers. The car is ours. Possessive adjectives go before the noun and possessive pronouns go after the noun.
