Possessive Pronouns
• Possessive pronouns are used in English to avoid
repeating information.
Example:
This pencil is my pencil, not your pencil.
(Sounds repetitive)
This pencil is mine, not yours.
(Mine and yours are possessive pronouns)
• Possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns
sometimes are confusing because most of them are
very similar in form.

Describes a
noun

Examples:
My house is big (MY is an adjective, describes the house )
Yours is small (YOURS is a pronoun, takes the place of noun
“house”)

Possessive adjectives go before
the noun and possessive
pronouns go after the noun.

= My picture)
• I like your flowers. Do you like mine? (object = my
flowers)
