Creating Crossword Puzzles in Hot Potatoes
1. Download and install Hot Potatoes at- http://hotpot.uvic.ca/
2. Once installed, open Hot Potatoes and click on JCross.
3. Click on the Create Grid Layout icon.
4. In the box to the left, type in the words you would like to use for the crossword puzzle.
Click “Make the grid” to create the crossword puzzle.
5. Click on Add Clues.
6. Click on a word and type the clue in the text box below. Once you have finished entering in the
clue, click the “Ok” button with the red check mark to the right of the clue text box. Be sure to
add clues for both Across and Down. When you have entered clues for all words, click the “Ok”
button with the green check mark at the bottom of the screen.
7. Go to Options > Configure Output to edit the title, instructions, feedback, buttons, appearance,
timer, and other settings.
8. On the Buttons tab, uncheck the Navigation boxes so that the user avoids page errors when
clicking on them.
9. Go to File > Save and save the document to the desktop.
10. To preview your crossword, click the Export to Web page icon.
11. Click View the exercise in my browser to preview the crossword puzzle in your internet
browser.
12. Once you are satisfied with how your crossword puzzle looks, close out of your internet
browser.
13. Navigate back to the JCross program, go to File > Create SCORM 1.2 Package and save to the
desktop. This saves the puzzle in a format that can be used in Desire2Learn.
Importing Your Puzzle into Desire2Learn
Log in to Desire2Learn and select the course you would like to put the crossword puzzle in.
1. Click on the gear icon
next to your name in the upper right corner.
2. Click Import/Export/Copy Components.
3. Choose Import Components.
4. Click from a course package.
5. Click Start.
6. From the window that pops up, click Upload.
7. Find and select the crossword zip file then click Open.
8. Click Import All Components.
9. Wait for the check marks to appear and then click View Content.
The crossword puzzle will appear at the bottom of the content as a SCORM document.
Desire2Learn may have renamed the content item as “Organization.” If you would like to change
this, click the pencil for the content item and rename it.
Viewing Your SCORM Report in Desire2Learn
Log in to Desire2Learn and select the course with your SCORM file.

Click on Content.
Click on the Table of Contents on the left panel.
Click on the Related Tools on the right panel.
Select View Reports.
5. Click on SCORM Reports.
6. Click on the Reports Icon under the Actions category to view the report.
