The Electrifier Visit us at: www.frenchbroademc.com Outlet Ads and Manager’s Report are Online MAY 2015 ”Owned by those we serve” MARSHALL, NC May is National Electrical Safety Month In recognition of the occasion, French Broad Electric is raising awareness about potential home electrical hazards and the importance of electrical safety. Home electrical failures cause more than 50,000 fires, resulting in 450 lives lost, 1,500 injuries and $1.5 billion in property damage each year, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Please take the time to check your home for these potentially hazardous electrical situations: Inside the Home: • Inspect electrical cords often for broken connectors or fraying. Throw away any worn cords to eliminate the possibility of shock, short circuit or fire. • Don’t overload power outlets. • The wattage of the bulbs you use in your home should match the wattage indicated on the light fixture. Overheated fixtures can lead to a fire. • When trying to unplug something from an outlet, pull on the plug, not the cord. • Keep in mind that turned off appliances are still connected to electricity until they are unplugged. To clean or repair these appliances always unplug them first. • Use extension cords only for short-term purposes, and make sure the cord is adequately suited for the amount of electricity it will be transferring. • Turn off and unplug all portable electrical appliances, like hairdryers, irons and shavers, when you’re finished using them. • Be familiar with the location of your breaker box and make sure the switches are clearly labeled so you can shut off electricity quickly in the event of an emergency. Outside the Home: • If there is a downed power line nearby, leave the area immediately and notify our office or call 911. If others are around, let them know that they need to stay away. • “Call Before You Dig.” Call your local office before starting a digging project, and workers will be sent to your home to mark utility lines in your yard. This service is free, and it has the potential to save your life. • Never use electrical equipment near any wet areas, such as pools or ponds. Safety is a year-round responsibility, but take the time right now to recognize National Electrical Safety Month by checking your home for potential risks. It only takes a few minutes to make sure you won’t become one of those troubling statistics. Edwards Retires Gary Edwards retired after 36 years of service in the Burnsville District. Gary was hired as a Tree Trimmer but worked his way up to a Groundman, a Lineman, a Line Crew Leader and he retired as Operations Manager. Gary plans to catch up on his ‘to do’ list at home, travel, and most of all, enjoy time with his family, and of course, play with his grandchildren. We wish Gary all the best in his retirement! Congratulations!!! French Broad EMC offices will be closed Monday, May 25th in honor of as we remember the men and women in our Armed Forces as they serve around the world. PAGE 2 The Electrifier MAY 2015 Manag er epor t Manager er’’s R Repor eport It’s Spring and Time to Clean Spring gives us a chance to thaw out after a chilly winter and many of us take advantage of longer daylight hours by doing a little spring cleaning and yard work. But the seasonal shift isn’t all good news. The rapid change from harsh, cold air to warmer temperatures can trigger severe weather. To protect our lines and keep power flowing safely to your home, French Broad EMC continually maintains our rightsof-way. Think of it as spring cleaning for power lines. Right-of-way (ROW) maintenance keeps tree limbs and other obstacles away from high-voltage power lines. It is an important part of the service we provide to you, our members, for three reasons: safety, reliability and cost. Our primary concern is the safety of our workers and members. Properly maintained ROW keeps our crews safe when they are restoring service and maintaining our system. Keeping trees clear of power lines also keeps your family safe. From making sure a child’s tree house doesn’t hit power lines to creating a safe environment while doing yard work, a well-maintained ROW helps avoid tragedy. If severe spring weather blows through, a well-maintained ROW leads to fewer outages and faster response time. Trees are less of a threat. When trees do fall, crews are able to restore service more quickly than they could with poorly maintained areas. As a not-for-profit company, FBEMC strives to keep costs affordable for you, our members. Maintaining our ROW is an important part of controlling costs. In our service territory, French Broad EMC has some of the most difficult terrain to navigate and the vast majority of our ROW’s are full of large, growing vegetation. With over 4,500 miles of power lines, the cost to maintain our ROW is our second largest expense behind wholesale power costs. Throughout our 74 year history, ROW maintenance has continued to increase, and so we constantly look for ways to control these costs and maintain our high level of service reliability. In addition to using various types of gas powered devices, Jeff Loven our ROW management plan includes the responsible use of herbicides to control our vegetation growth. We only use herbicides which have been approved by the EPA and have been proven as a safe and effective method for controlling vegetation growth. It is our goal to minimize the amount of large, high-growing vegetation while promoting the growth of grasses and other lowgrowing plants. As the large, woody trees are removed from the ROW, flowers and other low growing vegetation have an area where they now get enough sunlight so they can thrive. This, in turn, provides more areas of food for our local animal population. Fewer and shorter outages saves money for everyone. When crews work in well-maintained areas, we can reduce risks for employees and equipment too—another way to keep costs low. Safety, reliability, and cost: this is why we believe in ROW “spring cleaning” and our overall management plan. If we compromise on one of these areas, it impacts the others. At French Broad Electric, we are not willing to compromise. Maintaining our ROW is a priority for your safety, comfort and pocketbook.
