SHARING THE MAGIC OF
live theatre
BY PRESIDENT
CURT SCHROEDER
The Acting Company’s upcoming season will be its best ever.
We have been saying that for 34 years and each year we’ve been
right. When we began, our region had no community theater for
the performing arts. A handful of dreamers set about changing
that. And quite a journey their dream took them on. First came
a trip to Sacramento to incorporate as Theatre ‘86, the year by
which a 300 seat venue would hopefully be completed. It was 9
years later when a permanent venue was secured and with it a
change in the name of the company. The trip from 1984 to 1993
was not a straight one. Shows were produced in the Yuba City
High School cafeteria, the Refuge Restaurant’s banquet room,
the Women’s Club of Yuba City and conference center at the
Bonanza Inn. In 1991, we thought we had found a home in a
former grocery store at 815 B Street across from the high school.
However, first a photography studio then a catering service beat
us to the punch. In 1993, the building was once again available
and once again we came in second. The owner, however, no
doubt feeling some sympathy for us, leased to us instead. A year
later, we bought the building, ensuring that we would always
have a home. Some $300,000 later, a grocery store became a state
of the art, jewelry box of a theater. In the beginning shows were
hit and miss and sponsors were difficult to find. Then we began
to get up a head of steam. We are now a fixture in the community,
a place that patrons have come to expect professional excellence.
We have a base of almost 300 season ticket holders. Donors and
sponsors, including city and county, have willingly opened their
pocketbooks, knowing that their money will be well spent.
We added Magic Theater for children, which includes shows
for children and acting classes. Each year Magic Theater grows
and we have ambitious plans

change your ticket to a later date.

Love Letters
DIRECTED BY: PAT HILL
WRITTEN BY: A.R. GURNEY
SHOWING: JANUARY 20 — FEBRUARY 12
Love Letters by A.R. Gurney is a two-character play which
follows the relationship of a stuffy W.A.S.P. and a free-spirited

write to each other. The characters are played by two of The
Acting Company’s favorite stars: Mike Strong and Stephanie
McClain-Bollinger. Bring your Valentine to see this one!
The Seagull
DIRECTED BY: DAVID WHEELER
WRITTEN BY: ANTON CHEKOV, ADAPTED BY CHRISTOPHER HAMPTON
AUDITIONS: JANUARY 23 & 24
SHOWING: MARCH 10 — APRIL 2
Famous actress Irina Arkadina is obsessed with a callous lover,
dismissive of her frustrated playwright son, and suspicious of
an admiring young woman. Anton Chekhov’s groundbreaking
1895 masterpiece has been reimagined by director David
Wheeler to Texas in the 1950’s, where it explores the comictragic tensions between actors, mothers, sons, lovers, friends,
and servants. The Seagull is considered by critics as the first
modern play and is a story that still resonates today.

“take” on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Whether it’s the noisy

Claire, this radio show seamlessly combines drama and comedy,
heartbreak and hope. The 1940’s Radio Hour Christmas Carol
will sing its way into your heart.
