THE MEN OF LONDONDERRY IN 1630 AND 1663.

A common tradition in families of Scotch-Irish blood,
is that their ancestors were in the Siege of Londonderry. This tradition is especially strong among those
whose Scotch-Irish forebears settled in Pennsylvania
in the colonial period. The first siege of Londonderry occurred during the Irish Eebellion of 1641, but
the memorable one, continued from April 18th until August 1st, 1689. Lists of the persons who resided in Londonderry during the two sieges would be most interesting to their descendants, but it is improbable that such
records exist. The following lists undoubtedly give the
names of some of the besieged, and many of the family names of the others. The first list was made in
1630, twelve years before the first siege; the other in
1663, twenty-four years prior to the principal one. On
July 29, 1689, an address was made to William and
Mary, signed by "Governors, Officers, Clergy, and
other Gentlemen in the City and Garrison of Londonderry." A list of the signers was printed in Walker's
history of the siege, and reprinted by Charles A.
Hanna in The Scotch Irish, 1902, Volume I, pages
612, 613. The names of the thirteen young men, the
" 'Prentice Boys of Derry," who locked the city gates
at the beginning of the siege, were: William Cairns,
Henry Campsie, William Crookshanks, Alexander Cunningham, John Cunningham, Samuel Harvey, Samuel
Hunt, Alexander Irwin, Robert Morrison, Daniel Sherrard, Robert Sherrard, James Spike and James Steward. (Hanna, Volume I, p. 583.)
