Calendars and Schedules
Separate the class into 12 groups and give each group a calendar page. Have one member
from each group come to the front of the room and have those students arrange
themselves in order according to month. Then have them tape their pages to the
board in order.

Unit 8, Session 3.6
Vocabulary
Have students say the names of the months and
tell how many days are in each. You can tell from
these calendar pages how units of time are
related. Display the chart shown at the right and
have students discuss the equivalences.

Materials
Why do we say that 1 month is about 4 weeks?
• one calendar page for each
month
• full-year calendars

Students might say:
“Because except for February,
each month has more than 28 days.”
We say that a year has about 52 weeks because 52 ⴛ 7 ⴝ 364. Explain that a year
has about 365 days due to leap years. In the list, notice the term decade. A decade is
10 years.
NOTE Students use a calendar to relate
measures of time and figure elapsed time.
They also create a schedule.

Then have students use the calendar pages on the board, or individual full-year
calendars, to solve problems such as these: What is the date 4 weeks before July 7?
What day of the week is it? How many months is it from June 16 to November 16?

Have students list in order the activities in a typical classroom day. Supply the time
allotted for each activity. Give the time school begins, and then have volunteers give the
beginning and ending time for each activity. This schedule helps us to organize our
day and tells us when we do certain things. Refer students to the clock for help.
PR AC TICE
In the Activity 56 Master, students use a calendar to relate measures of time and
figure elapsed time. They also create a schedule.
DIFFERENTIATION : Suppor ting the Range of Learner s
Have volunteers give names of the months and days in languages other
than English with which they may be familiar. Compare and contrast the spellings and
pronunciations of those names with those used in English. Have them describe various
holidays celebrated in different cultures.
