Hi Galena Families,
The Teacher Appreciation Committee will be hosting their annual teachers' luncheon
and gift card raffle on December 15th. The luncheon and raffle are a wonderful way to
show the Galena staff how much we, the parents, appreciate the time and effort our
staff puts into the educational experience of our children. The teachers LOVE this
event and greatly look forward to it each year. Galena has over 100 staff members. So
in order to make this a successful raffle, we will need a large number of gift cards from
any store and smaller increments will insure that everyone is a winner.
Please consider uplifting and thanking your student's teachers by donating gift cards
for the raffle. This is a easy way for Galena parents and
families to show our appreciation. All card donations can be
given to Mrs. Williams at the front office (Mr. Brown's
secretary).
Thank you for your assistance in expressing our appreciation
for our hard working Galena staff.

A Message From the Den
By David Hawley, Dean of Students
Tardiness
We are at the 1st quarter mark of the
school year and tardies are beginning to
accumulate. Students are allowed four
tardies each semester before receiving a
consequence. The fifth tardy is one
reflection activity (lunch detention) and
the consequences increase after each
additional tardy. Excessive tardiness,
more than 30 minutes late, will result in a
lunch time reflection activity (20 minutes),
unless your student receives their 5th or
more tardy (tardy consequence +
excessive tardy). You can access your
child’s attendance report on Infinite

Galena Updates
By Erika Sanchez, Assistant Principal
Infinite Campus and Other Resources:
Our first quarter ended on October 12, 2016. That said, it is
important that all of our grizzlies continually practice good
study habits and keep up on their school work. As a parent,
it’s important to be supportive by checking Infinite Campus
and monitoring your child’s progress. Within Infinite
Campus, parents will also be able to find teachers’ contact
information if they are in need of communicating with the
teacher. Encourage your child to take care of all missing
assignments as soon as possible. In addition, suggest that
your child asks his/her teacher about additional tutoring
resources if he/she is feeling overwhelmed.
will be $15 pre-sale or $20 at the door. There will be a $3 fee
if you do not have your student ID at the dance. Please note
the parking is very limited. We highly recommend you give
your child a ride to this dance. If you are not called to pick up
your child early, please be at the Museum by 10:00 p.m. to
pick him/her up. This dance is for all Galena students. If
your child is planning to invite a friend who attends another
high school, paperwork for a guest pass must be completed
and submitted one week prior to this event. Please see Mrs.
Barrett at the front office for more information on guest
passes.
Attendance:
If your child is absent, he/she has three days to bring an
excuse note to the office. You may also call our attendance
secretary Tricia Vasquez at 775-851-5630 extension 30515 to
excuse your child’s absence. In the event that your child is
truant, a truancy letter will be issued in addition to lunch time
reflection activities. A third truancy will result in a citation
from school police. You can access your child’s attendance
report on Infinite Campus to verify any unexcused absences
or late arrivals to class. Excessive unexcused tardies will be
addressed in the discipline office and can lead to out of
school suspension. If your student is driving to school,
remind them that it is very important for them to keep the
cooler weather in mind when planning their commute to
school.
Winter Ball:
Our annual Winter Ball will be taking place on Saturday,
December 10th from 7-10 p.m. This year we will be at the
Terry Lee Wells Discovery Museum located at 490 S. Center

Counseling Corner
Senior Notes
By Mandy Campbell,
Senior Class Counselor
I
t is already November 2016 and
the senior year is flying by!
There is still plenty of time for
students to bring up their grades to
where they want them to be before final exams in December.
Students need to stay diligent on their classwork and
communicate with their teachers when issues arise. Now is
the time for your senior to be thinking about what he/she
will be doing next year. Since most jobs and careers do
require additional training and education, we always keep
students informed on post-high school educational options.
We also have military recruiter on campus each week and we
do post jobs in the library. The fall is the time to finalize
college applications: where to apply, how to apply to each
school, gathering letters of recommendation (if required), and
working on essays (if required) for college applications. The
same essays may also be used for scholarships.
This time of year can be particularly stressful for many
seniors as they are trying to stay on top of their classwork,
complete multiple college applications, meet deadlines, and
follow up on scholarship applications. The use of a planner
or calendar can be especially helpful in keeping track of dates,
deadlines, passwords, websites, contacts, etc. We encourage
students to stay as organized as possible through this process
and for the remainder of the senior year. Try to set a goal to
complete all college applications, by an early deadline, within
a reasonable time frame (e.g. Winter Break). Remember that
the UC (University of California) and CSU (California State
University) systems often have application deadlines of
November 30th! Early action is also usually in Nov. If you
have any questions about specific admissions requirements
for any school, contact the admissions office directly (or their
websites) at those colleges.
Even though many seniors may want to attend college
out of state, applying to a “safety” school (which may include
Nevada) is fast, easy, and may kick-start students on the
application process. Both the University of Nevada and
Truckee Meadows Community College applications for fall
2017 are open. Most colleges, including Nevada, encourage
students to apply online. STUDENTS APPLYING TO
THE UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA SHOULD APPLY
NOW (February 1st is the DEADLINE, but do not wait until
then!). Students who apply early will hear admission status
earlier; Early Registration is a smart way to go at Nevada, so
students get the classes they want.
Applying to college is always a three-step process:
complete the application on the college’s website, order
THE GRIZZLY’S GROWL
official transcript from Galena on
Parchment.com to be sent to college(s), then
also order test scores from ACT/SAT to be
sent to college(s). If your student plans to
live on-campus, he/she should complete any
applications for housing ASAP; Nevada, for
example, has had wait-lists for housing the
past three years. Many colleges, especially
private universities, use the Common
Application as their application. The Common Application
allows students to enter their information just once and it can
be sent to multiple schools. For all recommendations, I need
a resume from the student detailing Activities on campus, off
campus, community service, employment, honors and
awards. All students have received a resume template I need
in order to write an adequate letter of recommendation.
Keep in mind that many colleges may also require a
supplemental application and essays in addition to the
Common App- students need to double check this!
Your student has already received information on how
and where to look for scholarships (they should be doing this
right now! Start with Galena website under “scholarships” on

which can be started NOW—for the first time ever you can
submit FAFSA in the fall. We have another FAFSA
workshop for parents on Nov 10, at 6 p.m. in the Galena
Library. The FAFSA is the required application for federal
and state financial aid programs and is used by colleges to
determine financial aid packages; these include grants,
scholarships, work study, and loan offers. The application is
free.
November 6th is the 2016 College Fair. Over 80 colleges,
universities, and tech schools will be in attendance, each
having one or more booths. Students should attend, sign up
in advance at www.wacaccollegefair.com. It will be held at
UNR at the Joe, NOON – 4 p.m. that Sunday—which is
daylight savings time. There are breakout sessions beginning
at 11:30.
Please keep an eye on your student for signs of senioritis.
We want every single senior to graduate in June 2017! Please
use our Infinite Campus program to monitor your student’s
grades and progress. The student should communicate with
his/her teachers, but if that breaks down, you can email your
student’s teachers via Infinite Campus if you have specific
questions about issues/grades in their class. The semester
ends on December 15th and final semester grades will be
posted on their transcript shortly thereafter. Seniors cannot
afford to fail any of their classes! Identification and
intervention to address any failing grades right now is critical.
Let’s keep those grades up and have a strong end to the first
semester of the senior year!

Hello to our Juniors Families!
I
Hello Sophomores’ and Parents of Sophomores’,
Thank-you to the parents who attended Navigate
Galena on September 21st. We had a good turnout and I
hope you left feeling more informed about sophomore year
and more connected to Galena High School. I hope to see
you there again next year for information on navigating your
child’s junior year. The power point from Navigate Galena
is available on galenahigh.com under the counseling tab, for
anyone who missed it.
All high school students and parents are invited to
attend the College Fair at UNR Joe Crowley Student Union
on November 6th. If you are interested, this is a free event
and is a great way to gain exposure to many different
colleges and universities. Registration online is
recommended wacaccollegefair.com (In past years, the lines
were very long for people who had not preregistered.). The
fair runs from Noon until 4 PM.

Remember that the grades you are getting now are a
“progress report”. You have nine more weeks to study and
improve your grades before they are on your permanent
transcript at semester. So work hard, stay diligent and study.

Greetings Freshmen!
A
t this point in time, you should have already
received your progress report card. The semester
ends on December 15th so there is still time for you
to improve! As we discussed in our Freshman class
presentations, the final semester grades in December (and
June) “count” and will be permanently reflected on your
high school transcript. Communicating with your teachers
is the first and most important step to start improving your
grades. Ask them what you can do to get your grade up and
when you can come in for extra help (lunch, before or after
school, etc.). Your teachers are here to help you, but it is up
to you to be proactive, advocate for yourself, and take
advantage of the help offered to you. We understand that
starting high school can be a little bit intimidating and we
are more than happy to help facilitate the process of getting
your student extra help…..so please, do not hesitate to ask!
Parents: We encourage you to have a conversation
with your student about how their first semester has gone.
Based on the level of your student’s success, some questions
that might be beneficial are: “What seemed to work well this
semester?”… This question will get them thinking about the
positive things that really worked to help them be successful
so they can be mindful of carrying them on to the second
semester. Another question could be: “What areas (i.e. tests,
assignments, organization) did you struggle in and what
could you do differently second semester to turn them
around?”….This question will help focus on coming up
with some solutions. Just a couple of ideas for conversation
over the Thanksgiving and Winter Break!
In addition to staying on top of your classes this year
(remember: the goal is graduation 2020 and it starts by
passing your classes your freshman year!), the ninthgrade year is a great time to explore the various ways to get
involved (i.e. sports, clubs, volunteering, and leadership). Be
sure to listen to the announcements each day for more
Dear Grizzly Families,
information on the clubs here at
Galena (announcements are also
posted on our website:
www.galenahigh.com). One thing to
keep in mind as you start to explore
extracurricular options is that it is
often more advantageous to be dedicated and deeply
involved in two or three activities that you really enjoy (i.e.
soccer team, art club, volunteering with a program, etc.)
than to have a bunch of activities that you started and
eventually quit or gave only a slight bit of time and attention
to. ** It is a good idea, however, to sample clubs and
activities as a freshman to narrow it down and discover
what activities or programs you want to devote your time
and attention too.**
Freshmen students: You should start a folder/list
called “Things to Brag About.” List and file away all of the
activities, sports, clubs, volunteering, etc., that you are
involved in. Also include any awards/recognitions you
receive and be sure to update it regularly. This list will come
in very handy in three years when you are filling out college
and scholarship applications!
Ultimately, participate in those sports, activities, and/
or clubs that you love, are interested in, and can dedicate
yourself to while keeping your grades up and not creating
huge amounts of stress. Sometimes this can result in a
balancing act and figuring how to successfully balance
academics and extracurricular activities is a lifelong learning
process! In the end, however, it is not about “how long the
list is” of activities that you were involved in that is
important; rather it is the level of involvement and
commitment that you invested (and hopefully had fun too!).
Keep those grades up Freshman!
