Letter Grade Calculation Skyward uses the following steps to convert the grades shown for each content standard on the report card into an overall course letter grade. THE INTERDISCIPLINARY SKILLS SCORES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE CALCULATION. 1. Convert 4-point trend grades to their 100-point equivalents. Skyward uses a 100-point scale when performing calculations. A linear transformation is used to convert trend grades on a 4point scale to grades on a 100-point scale. The table below shows the 100-point equivalents to each of the possible trend grades on the 4-point scale. 4-Point 1 1.5 2 2.5 3 3.5 4 Event Scores 100-Point 7.14 21.43 35.71 50.00 64.29 78.57 92.86 Equivalent 2. Average the Standard/Strand Trend Grades. The 100-point equivalents of the trend grades for each standard/strand are averaged. Example: Integrated Science 8 for third quarter (Q3) A “/” indicates that the standard was not sufficiently addressed during that quarter to report a grade. Strand: Physical Science Standards PS1 Forces: balanced and unbalanced PS2 Properties of substances PS3 Matter PS4 Energy transfers and transformations Strand: Earth Science Q1 2 / / 3 Standards Q1 PS5 Motion of objects in the solar system PS6 Earth and other bodies in the solar system Strand: Life Science 3 2.5 Standards Q1 PS7 Human body Strand: Processes 2.5 Standards Q1 PS8 Systems PS9 Inquiry/Investigations PS10 Models PS11 Application 3.5 2.5 3.5 3 100-point Equivalent 35.71 64.29 100-point Equivalent 64.29 50.00 100-point Equivalent 50.00 100-point Equivalent 78.57 50.00 78.57 64.29 Note: The average is score is rounded to the second decimal place (hundredth place). Skyward therefore would use 59.52 in any further calculations. 3. Determine a Letter Grade Using the Table Below. The average score is compared to the different 100-point ranges to determine a letter grade. The average score of 59.52 falls within the B- Letter range. This is the letter grade that would be reported. Letter Grade A B+ B BC+ C CD+ D F Proficiency Scale Average Upper Limit Lower Limit 4.00 3.25 3.24 3.00 2.99 2.88 2.87 2.75 2.74 2.50 2.49 2.25 2.24 2.00 1.99 1.75 1.74 1.50 1.49 1.00 100-Point Scale Average Upper Limit Lower Limit 100.00 71.43 71.42 64.29 64.28 60.86 60.85 57.14 57.13 50.00 49.99 42.86 42.85 35.71 35.70 28.57 28.56 21.43 21.42 0.00 *Note: This would be the same letter grade I would arrive at if I averaged the original 4-point scores *Email [email protected] (Director of Curriculum & Assessment) and [email protected] (Curriculum & Assessment Specialist) if you have further questions about how Skyward calculates a letter grade from the individual content standard scores.
