HENRY STREET SETTLEMENT EDUCATION & EMPLOYMENT SERVICES THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 5, 2016 ACCOMPLISHMENTS v The ESL course continued their unit on clothing and shopping. They created and practiced a dialogue for shopping and learned about seasonal clothing. The Level 1 course practiced group interviews, goal setting, and learned about informational interviews. Three of the students participated in a group interview this week and one, Cristy Li, was offered a job. The Level 2 course finalized their real-life stories, learned about customer service and difficult customers, did their final mock interviews and had the final class party. v ABE/HSE is happy to announce that one of their HSE students, Kyro, is taking the test this weekend and another student, Juliana Santos, passed the test! v At PS 134’s After-School Program, during the academic section of soccer practice, the upper grades focused on Character Development. In this week’s Vocal Music class, not only did our early childhood classes review the songs they have already been working on (Feeling Good, Body Bop and Way up High), but they also began learning “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” and “Santa Clause is Coming to Town” for our December Winter Holiday Sharing. v JET Client WE was placed as a temporary laborer at Columbia University in September. Due to engagement with JET, coaching on relationship building and career progression, and upward retention coaching, WE has been hired as the permanent, full-time Porter for Columbia University with full benefits, excellent $22/hr pay, and union membership. v YAIP Participant John has been in the Lower East Side his entire life. Both of his parents came to Henry Street for help with their job search and employment, so when they found out that there were services available for their son, they were overjoyed. John started YAIP without any work experience whatsoever. Last week, YAIP placed him at the IT department at Henry Street Settlement, and it’s been an absolute success. John’s confidence and motivation has skyrocketed, his supervisors love him, and his skill set finally has a formal environment to grow. He’s already rebuilt 3 computers and has developed new knowledge of network system administration. The experience has inspired him to consider going to college and pursing further technical trainings in his field. v This week at OCA Community School we took a trip to the movies! Eligible students for the trip missed less than 2 days of school in the past 6 weeks. Additionally, one of our fantastic seniors participated in a final round interview for the POSSE Foundation scholarship. Teachers also participated in a mental health workshop as part of our “lunch and learn” series facilitated in partnership with school-based mental health. v This week at PS 20’s After-School Program, Unit 1A experimented with different shapes of bubble wands to see if wand shape affected bubble shape. Unit 3A and 3B conducted a fun and colorful experiment called "The Walking Water Rainbow." The students were amazed to watch all the colors rise up the paper towel connecting and forming one big rainbow. Unit 4/5B learned about gravity, force, mass and friction while conducting the Galileo's Tower of Pisa experiment. v This week in 301 Sports and Rec we hosted the playoffs for Sol Lain Flag Football. Next week we will be having our championship game with our championship ceremony immediately after. v Expanded Horizons Access Staff held a hugely success First Annual College Fair, More than 30 professionals from a variety of fields volunteered their time to speak with our 9th-12th grade students about their work and shed light on the array of opportunities that exist in the workforce. Seventy-seven Students attended. v Two EH seniors have been selected for one of the most selective and prestigious scholarship program in the country: Quest Bridge National College Match! These two students will receive four-year, full-ride scholarships to Swarthmore and Colby Colleges! Senior Michelle Campos, POSSE Finalist for Lawrence College, completed her final interview and will receive a notification of her status next week. v Expanded Horizons welcomes new College Success Counselor, Cesar Moran, to the team. He has hit the ground running successfully connecting with alumni, assisting with the execution of College Access’ well-attended career fair, and contributing valuable input to the program’s goals within his first week. v During mixed media class at UNMS SONYC after-school students captured images on disposable and digital cameras, and discussed composition, image making, and storytelling. Students started to arrange their photos to create slideshows. v Middle School Success Center staff worked with the school guidance team to screen applications to ensure every student listed schools they are eligible for due to the admissions criteria. They also recommended open houses to families with specific needs and interests still inquiring. v Cornerstone Evening Program participants competed in the December Ping Pong Tournament. Brandon Castillo won for the first time. During the week, 10 participants attended the Youth Advisory Meeting. The participants created a list of activities and items they want for the center. They also brainstormed fundraising ideas such as bake sales and penny drives. v This past Saturday BGR Sports and Rec hosted our 2016 19u BGR NCAA All Star Game. Team Elite defeated Team Superstars in overtime 102 to 101. Malik Shand had team high for Team Elite with 21pts and Fisher Smith chipped in 20pts in the team victory. Lakye Smith from Team Superstars poured in a new single game scoring record with 52pts in the game! v This week in Cornerstone and BGR After-School, Election Decision 2016 and the Inauguration were both held. As a result of the election Nathaniel P. is the new Mayor. On Friday, the inauguration was held and the elected officials went immediately into a town hall meeting to get business underway. v It was a busy week at the Manhattan Charter School After-School program. On Wednesday, each site presented their Native American Cultural Projects . Unit 1 learned about the Chippewa tribe. During their sharing, Unit 1 taught the rest of the program some phrases in the Chippewa language and showed us the Dreamcatchers they had made in anticipation of their sharing. Unit 2 learned about the Cherokee and shared the murals they had created depicting Native American mythology. Last but not least, Unit 3 shared about the Sioux, and taught us all about their pottery and the different type of dwellings the Sioux used before the modern buildings we have today. MCS After-School also had our Gingerbread House Making Event this past Friday.
