HENRY STREET SETTLEMENT
EDUCATION & EMPLOYMENT SERVICES
THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 5, 2016
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
v The ESL course continued their unit on clothing and shopping. They created and practiced a dialogue
for shopping and learned about seasonal clothing. The Level 1 course practiced group interviews, goal
setting, and learned about informational interviews. Three of the students participated in a group
interview this week and one, Cristy Li, was offered a job. The Level 2 course finalized their real-life
stories, learned about customer service and difficult customers, did their final mock interviews and had
the final class party.
v ABE/HSE is happy to announce that one of their HSE students, Kyro, is taking the test this weekend and
another student, Juliana Santos, passed the test!
v At PS 134’s After-School Program, during the academic section of soccer practice, the upper grades
focused on Character Development. In this week’s Vocal Music class, not only did our early childhood
classes review the songs they have already been working on (Feeling Good, Body Bop and Way up
High), but they also began learning “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” and “Santa Clause is Coming to
Town” for our December Winter Holiday Sharing.
v JET Client WE was placed as a temporary laborer at Columbia University in September. Due to
engagement with JET, coaching on relationship building and career progression, and upward retention
coaching, WE has been hired as the permanent, full-time Porter for Columbia University with full
benefits, excellent $22/hr pay, and union membership.
v YAIP Participant John has been in the Lower East Side his entire life. Both of his parents came to Henry
Street for help with their job search and employment, so when they found out that there were services
available for their son, they were overjoyed. John started YAIP without any work experience
whatsoever. Last week, YAIP placed him at the IT department at Henry Street Settlement, and it’s been
an absolute success. John’s confidence and motivation has skyrocketed, his supervisors love him, and
his skill set finally has a formal environment to grow. He’s already rebuilt 3 computers and has
developed new knowledge of network system administration. The experience has inspired him to
consider going to college and pursing further technical trainings in his field.
v This week at OCA Community School we took a trip to the movies! Eligible students for the trip
missed less than 2 days of school in the past 6 weeks. Additionally, one of our fantastic seniors
participated in a final round interview for the POSSE Foundation scholarship. Teachers also
participated in a mental health workshop as part of our “lunch and learn” series facilitated in partnership
with school-based mental health.
v This week at PS 20’s After-School Program, Unit 1A experimented with different shapes of bubble
wands to see if wand shape affected bubble shape. Unit 3A and 3B conducted a fun and colorful
experiment called "The Walking Water Rainbow." The students were amazed to watch all the colors rise
up the paper towel connecting and forming one big rainbow. Unit 4/5B learned about gravity, force,
mass and friction while conducting the Galileo's Tower of Pisa experiment.
v This week in 301 Sports and Rec we hosted the playoffs for Sol Lain Flag Football. Next week we will
be having our championship game with our championship ceremony immediately after.
v Expanded Horizons Access Staff held a hugely success First Annual College Fair, More than 30
professionals from a variety of fields volunteered their time to speak with our 9th-12th grade students
about their work and shed light on the array of opportunities that exist in the workforce. Seventy-seven
Students attended.

the country: Quest Bridge National College Match! These two students will receive four-year, full-ride
scholarships to Swarthmore and Colby Colleges! Senior Michelle Campos, POSSE Finalist for
Lawrence College, completed her final interview and will receive a notification of her status next week.

ground running successfully connecting with alumni, assisting with the execution of College Access’
well-attended career fair, and contributing valuable input to the program’s goals within his first week.
v During mixed media class at UNMS SONYC after-school students captured images on disposable and
digital cameras, and discussed composition, image making, and storytelling. Students started to arrange
their photos to create slideshows.
v Middle School Success Center staff worked with the school guidance team to screen applications to
ensure every student listed schools they are eligible for due to the admissions criteria. They also
recommended open houses to families with specific needs and interests still inquiring.
v Cornerstone Evening Program participants competed in the December Ping Pong Tournament. Brandon
Castillo won for the first time. During the week, 10 participants attended the Youth Advisory Meeting.
The participants created a list of activities and items they want for the center. They also brainstormed
