Termly Curriculum Information Year 2 Teacher: Miss Rattigan English We will begin Spring term by exploring the story Meerkat Mail, linking nicely to our humanities topic about the local area. The second half of the term will focus on fairy tales with a twist. We will write a range of genres including recounts, stories, poems and instructions. We will write using different forms of sentences and will learn how to use a range of punctuation and conjunctions. We will continue to practise different reading strategies including inferential skills. Through our spellings and phonics we will investigate different spelling rules. Our focus on handwriting will continue this term and we will be practising how to join our letters from the line. Physical Education Multi-skills is our games focus this term and our dance work will be linked to our rainforest topic Music The children will be exploring creating their own compositions, playing some tuned and un-tuned instruments. We will experiment with sound and listen to a variety of music types. Science Within our topic ‘Materials’, Year 2 will learn how to identify and compare the suitability of a variety of everyday materials. We will investigate how the shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching. Will we look into sustainable materials and how recycling is used in our everyday life. Humanities, Computing, Art, DT. Geography: We will be completing field work about our local area—Romiley and compare our environment with that of the Daintree rainforest in Australia and also looking at the country of India. We will begin looking at map skills and begin looking at simple grid references. Date: Spring 2017 Maths We will begin this term by looking at sequencing numbers, with a focus of 2’s, 5’s, 10’s and 3’s. We will move onto adding two digit numbers using a range of strategies including partitioning. Using our multiplication facts we are solving problems using materials, arrays, repeated addition. We will be learning to recognise, find, name and write the following fractions—1/2, 1/4, 3/4, 1/3. This term we will focus on measure, we will be learning to choose and use appropriate equipment and standard units to estimate and measure length/height (m/cm) and mass (kg/g). We will also be looking at temperature. We will be learning about pictograms, tally charts, block diagrams and simple tables, linking this to our humanities work. Computing : This term we will look at becoming coders and game testers. We will be looking at different ways we can code and create games. Reading Books changed—Tuesday and Friday. Art: The children will be looking at famous artists such as Andy Goldsworthy, Vincent Van Gogh and Vincent Scarpace. We will link our art work over the curriculum. Maths— Will send home games and activities to focus on number recall. These games can be repeated. DT: The children will be learning about food technology using what we have learnt last term about healthy meals. Spellings—sent home on a Monday to be tested on a Friday.
