A Note on the Rules
Chairman, Daniel Prieve
We are going to adopt the new local rule for Accidental
Movement of a Ball on the Putting Green. The full text
of the rule, along with the explanation, are at the
following link: http://www.usga.org/rules-hub/2017local-rule/2017-local-rule-full-text.html.
In short, if you accidentally move your ball on the
putting green, there is no longer any penalty. You must
replace your ball to where it was before it moved. Look
for more detailed explanation on the club website.
Club President
We will also be posting the rules quiz on the website by
mid-March. If you pass, you will have fulfilled your rules
requirement for this season and next. We will also offer
two rules seminars, one in April, and one in August.
Attending one of those will also fulfill your rules
requirement. If are not sure if you need to fulfill your
rules requirement, e-mail me at [email protected].

Tips on Improving Pace of Play
Always know your group’s position on the course relative to the group in front of you. If a gap starts to build up between
your group and the group in front, take every practical step, including hitting out of turn, to quickly reduce that gap and
maintain a correct separation of less than one hole for the duration of the round. It is everyone’s responsibility in the group
to ensure you are not falling behind the group in front. Call out any behavior that your fellow-players are engaging in which
aids and abets slow play and encourage or help them to move along more quickly.
You must be ready to hit your shot when it’s your turn. Ensure you have the necessary equipment such as tees, ball
markers, pitch mark repairers, gloves and towels, handy to avoid unnecessary trips to your equipment. Use the time when
others are playing to calculate your shot’s yardage, determine your putt’s line, take practice swings and any other
preparation you need to hit your shot. Do not wait until players have completed their shots before starting your routine.
Under the Rules of Golf, a ball is deemed lost after five minutes of searching. Do not take longer than five minutes to
search for a ball as it is already lost at that point. If multiple balls are lost at the same time, players must look for their own
balls first before helping others. Similarly, if your ball is some distance away from the lost ball, hit your ball first before
helping look for the lost ball. As much as possible, remember to watch each of your playing-partners’ balls as they tee off or
hit shots from the fairways. The more eyes which are following balls into rough or problem areas the better chance of finding
those balls quickly. Make sure you properly mark your ball so that you can readily identify it from different angles, including
in the rough, hazards, embedded lies or bunkers. The use of ball marking stencils is highly recommended.
Hit a provisional ball if you suspect your shot is out of bounds or lost outside a water hazard. You must declare your
intention to hit a provisional to your group before you hit the ball otherwise you will be deemed to have played stroke and
distance. Always have a spare ball handy to avoid going back to your equipment, and if on the tee, let the remainder of the
players hit their drives before you hit your provisional ball.
Play two balls if there is any doubt as to a ruling or procedure. Under Rule 3-3 of the Rules of Golf, when a player is
doubtful of his rights or the correct procedure during the play of a hole he may complete the hole with two balls. By
following this procedure, the players will continue with their round and not impede any players behind them. The player
must decide to play two balls after the doubtful situation has arisen and before taking further action. He must announce his
decision to his playing partners, and inform the committee at the end of the round. See Rule 3-3 for more details regarding
this rule.
Be expeditious on the putting green. Remember you’re not playing the back nine at Augusta on Sunday. Repair pitch marks
as you walk on to the putting green or when other players are preparing to putt. Mark and clean your ball when others are
preparing to putt. Take an appropriate amount of time to line up and execute your putt but do not take an excessive amount
of time. If you’re able to hole out short putts without standing on others’ lines do that instead of marking and re-marking
your ball. Do not lay down equipment on the opposite side of the green from the next tee.
Do not record your scores on the putting green. Do not wait on the putting green to record your scores. As you walk off the
putting green, confirm with your fellow-players all scores, then record scores on the cards on the next tee when your fellowplayers are teeing off.
Do not waste time when sharing a cart with a fellow-player. Where practical do not remain in the cart until your partner
has played his shot. Park the cart in a place equidistant between both players’ balls and both players walk to your balls.
Estimate what equipment you might need and take them with you. Start surveying your shot, including yardage, as you walk
towards your ball. Similarly, don’t remain in the cart all the way to the green if your ball is short of in the green in a non-cart
area, or on the opposite side of the green from the next tee. Take all necessary equipment with you to make the shots and
remember not to leave the equipment on the opposite side of the green from the next tee.
Understand Section 1 – Etiquette; Behavior on the Course of the Rules of Golf. It’s important to know all the rules of golf
but don’t forget to know and live by the Etiquette section. If you’ve found yourselves losing a lot of ground on the group in
front and you find it impossible to make up that time, consider waving the group behind through if they’re able to play
through quickly and inform the event Committee that you took that action. Above all else, have awareness of your position
on the course and how it’s affecting your playing-partners and the general playing-public. This includes being efficient with
your time when the cart lady appears, when taking bathroom breaks or running back to the clubhouse at the turn for a
sandwich. Everyone should have fun playing this terrific game, but also you have the responsibility to make sure it’s fun for
everyone else.
