The Moon, Tides & Earthquakes
Thisweek’s“supermoon”andtheKaikouraearthquakesparked
somediscussionovertheroleofthemoonincreatingbothtides
andearthquakes.
Tides
• Thegravitationalforceofthemoonisoneten-millionththatof

• Thesun'sgravitationalforceontheearthisonly46percentthat

forthecreationoftides.
• Thesun'sgravityalsoproducestides.Butsincetheforcesare
smaller,ascomparedtothemoon,theeffectsaregreatly
decreased.
• WhenevertheMoon,EarthandSunarealigned,thegravitational

• Springtideshappenwhenthesunandmoonareonthesameside

• WhentheMoonisatfirstquarterorlastquarterphase(meaning

tidesaregenerallyweaker;thesearecalledneaptides.
• Springtidesandneaptidelevelsareabout20%higherorlower

• Offshore,inthedeepocean,thedifferenceintidesisusuallyless

Earthquakes
ItispossiblethattheMooncanbeafactorintriggeringearthquakes.
TheUSGeologicalSurveysays:
