Why recycle your waste?
• Recycling with Merton Council is up to 30% cheaper than sending it to
be buried in landfill.
• Sending materials to landfill is a waste of natural resources and creates
poisonous gases, which contribute to global warming.
• Every business, no matter how big or small, has a duty of care to dispose
of waste through a licensed waste carrier.
• The Pre-treatment regulations introduced in October 2007 require waste
to go through some form of process to reduce its environmental impact
before being disposed of to landfill. A simple way to do this is to separate
items for recycling, more information on waste regulations can be found
at www.netregs.gov.uk

Yes Please
The Environmental Protection Act 1990 places
a duty of care on all businesses to manage and
dispose of their waste responsibly.
Your business rates do not include the cost of
your recycling and rubbish disposal so you must
ensure your rubbish is collected by an authorised
waste carrier. You should keep a copy of your
waste transfer note paperwork for a minimum of
two years.

It is an offence to put recycling or waste from a business into
