Spring Newsletter 2015 - Crossroads Animal Shelter

The Crossroads Connection
Volume 16 No. 1
Spring/Summer 2015
Last autumn we proposed a lofty
fund raising goal of $28,000 to
extend the roof of the shelter
outdoor kennel area to protect
the dogs from inclement elements
and to simplify maintenance.
Thanks to so many generous donors,
we far exceeded our goal and the
entire project is already completed.
Special thanks to Ed Mader and his
crew from Commercial Construction
of MN for their expert and thoughtful
workmanship, with minimal disruption
for the staff and care of the animals.
We want to share our success with
everyone by having an open house
on Sunday, June 14th from 12 – 2
pm. Please come to see our new
roof and join us for hot dogs and
beverages. In addition, that same
day we will be offering microchipping
of family pets...dogs and cats...for
the low fee of only $20. Please
notedogs must be on a leash and
cats in carrying crates. Please call if
questions:
763-684-1234.

14th Annual Dinner for the
Dogs (and Cats, Too!)
The 14th Annual Dinner for the
Dogs (and Cats, Too!) was
held on Saturday, April 25th
at the Buffalo Civic Center.
133 of our faithful supporters came together for our
traditional evening of games, story telling and huge
silent and live auctions. The event raised $10,400
to benefit the homeless dogs and cats who call
Crossroads their temporary home.
The annual contributions of two incredibly gorgeous
handmade queen size quilts from Judy Hidde and
Karen Lucht brought $700 on the live auction alone!
Our grateful thanks seems understated!
Next year’s dinner event will be on Saturday April
30th at the same location. Save the date!
2015 Volunteer of the Year
Webster’s definition of superlative
is surpassing all others, and the synonym is
incomparable. Both those words describe our 2015
volunteer of the year, Susan Brouse. Whether miles
driven, errands done, yards of fabric purchased
donated, cut and delivered, thank you receipts written
and mailed, liaisons made with other rescue groups,
fund raising events arranged and attended, volunteer
orientations and tours conducted, cage sponsorships
maintained, and many hours of assistance at the
shelter during adoption hours, Susan surpasses all
others. It is safe to say Susan is the only person who
chose to retire from her real job and to purchase a
new van to enhance her ability to be more readily
available to maintain her commitment to Crossroads
Animal Shelter and the homeless animals.
For the past eleven years Susan
has been the very committed and
caring owner of her purrfect feline
companion, Luna. Back in 2004
Susan agreed to foster Luna who
was poorly tolerating shelter life for
almost two years. Susan quickly
fell in love and adopted Luna. Luna
has had health issues over the years and once again
Susan’s dedication to her beloved companion is
unsurpassed. We hope Susan’s efforts on behalf of
homeless animals everywhere continues indefinitely
and we thank her immensely.
Special thanks to Marty Ferguson and his crew at
FS3, Inc in Annandale for organizing this golf event
to benefit three local animal shelters. Last year we
received $3,000 from this event.

Early Spaying Reduces the Risk
Spaying puppies before their first heat cycle, which
occurs at about six months of age, cuts their risk for
developing mammary cancer by half. Middle-aged
or older, unspayed female dogs – and those spayed
after age two – are most at risk, so it’s important to
routinely check for small lumps on the abdomen and
consult your dog’s veterinarian if you find any.
Multiple mammary tumors are common and can be
different types with different outcomes. If malignant,
the tumors can grow quickly and spread to other
mammary glands, lymph nodes and lungs. The type
of tumor, size and severity affect prognosis, as does
the extent of it spreading. Veterinarians usually
recommend surgery, but follow-up studies of dogs
who have had a complete mastectomy found a high
incidence of recurrence and metastatic disease.

Tail Waggin’ Tales to Share . . .
In September 2014 we received a very personable pastel torti female who appeared to have
old healed deformities. Both the shoulder and leg disabilities were on her right side, hence
her affectionate name of Righty. We felt strongly that she was in no pain and the vet exam
suggested nothing to the contrary. After four months Righty was adopted and returned. Over
the next few weeks it seemed to us that her leg condition was deteriorating and we decided upon
amputation. Rightly had her surgery mid March and after only a few days of pain pills she was
out and about and healing rapidly. Her incision healed perfectly and she actually removed her
own sutures, about one a day until done! The best part of this tale if that Rightly has now been
adopted by a lady who came all the way from Redwood Falls three times to make her choice of just the right cat!
An adorable Silky Terrier, Katie, was a stray impounded last October 2014 and never
claimed by her owners. She was readily adopted in less than a month, but four short
months later we received word that the new owners needed to return her because she
is now diabetic! Of course we took her back. The prescribed insulin as well as proper
food was obtained and we began treatment immediately. Our amazing staff was 100%
successful in stabilizing her condition quickly. The challenge now was to find Katie a new
home. Our dear friends Audrey and Leo, after loosing their beloved 16-year-old diabetic
Westhighland Terrier, stepped forward and adopted Katie. Many thanks to Audrey and Leo!
Trooper was born last May 2014 in our care. Trooper grew up with
the unfortunate and troubling diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease. We struggled with medications and dietary challenges for eight to nine months. Nothing worked. The
diarrhea was overwhelming. This condition is parallel to Crohn’s disease in humans.
One day we had the right conversation with the right veterinary professional who
suggested a trial of a new soy based cat food. The results have been nothing short
of a miracle cure – albeit pricey. Trooper looks and obviously feels much better and
remains with us to today waiting for his new understanding owners.
2014 was a record setting year with three heartworm positive dogs. The first was Frankie,
a middle aged Pointer Hound mix, dropped off in our outdoor kennel at the shelter last July.
He was incredibly thin and seemed less than energetic or healthly. The heartworm treatment
protocol has changed over the years, now taking longer and resulting in far fewer symptoms of
discomfort and illness for the dog. Frankie thrived under our TLC, despite the huge challenge of
his lack of appetite and failure to gain weight. By November Frankie’s treatment was completed,
he went from 45 pounds to 63 pounds. He is now heartworm negative!!
In mid November our next two heartworm positive dogs came to us
as strays. First Gabby, an adorable personable little red female
of a questionable mix and Slim, a gorgeous very thin purebred male black lab. We
were incredibly fortunate to find remarkable foster homes for both. The foster homes
gave their medications, took them to their vet appointments and kept us informed
of how well they were doing as well as what wonderful dogs they both were. They
both tolerated the three-month protocol very well with literally no side effects. On
April 4th Slim’s foster family officially adopted him… now named Apollo. Kevin
tells us “Apollo loves the kids, spending time with Bella (a Golden Doodle), chasing
squirrels and napping on the couch. Thank you for letting us bring him into our family.”
Gabby spent her last month of treatment with us at the shelter. Within days of being
available for adoption she found her forever home who shared with us immediately that
“Gabby is now Dottie. She is an angel. So sweet, smart, well behaved, calm and welltrained. This is our second dog as well as our cat from Crossroads Animal Shelter and the
way you care for them and truly know them is fantastic.” Truly a successful happy ending.
