Your Schools Summer 2011 - Bedford City School District

Summer 2011
Class of 2011 Begins
Next Journey of Their Lives
University Circle’s historic Severance Hall was the setting for
Bedford High School’s 126th Commencement Ceremony on
Friday June 3, 2011. In preparation to awarding diplomas to
the 249 students, several individuals made remarks.
Building on the popular MasterCard marketing campaign,
first-year principal Samuel J. Vawters recited the costs associated with the senior year of high school. “But the cost to hear
your child’s name as he or she receives a diploma…priceless!” he proclaimed to the graduates’ parents. In the words of
American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson he advised the grads,
“Do not follow where the path may lead, but go
where there is no path and leave a trail.”
Superintendent Sherman C.
Micsak talked to the students
about choices. “This class has
great potential to make the world a
better place,” he told them. “Your
years at Bedford High have given
you the skills and knowledge to
make the right choices. Now, take
what you have learned and use it
to do the right thing
in any situation.”
“Take risks, seize opportunities,
and have faith in yourself,”
Bedford High School Teacher of
the Year Michelle Bellitto told
the graduates. “Take advantage
of the opportunities that life puts
before you.”
Senior Speaker Terrez Sanders’ comments
were more celebratory. “Let’s go out and
show the world what we’ve got! Let’s show
that ‘We are Number One twice!’” he
exclaimed, in reference to the class’s motto
and graduation year.

relationships with others. “Throughout
our lives, we may hit a point where we can’t do it ourselves.
These people will help us when times are tough,” he noted.
Board of Education President Phil Stevens congratulated the
students for their energy, excitement, and enthusiasm. “Opportunities are waiting for you. Tackle them with (the same) energy, enthusiasm, and excitement,” he advised the graduates.
Following the awarding of diplomas, Class President Javonté
Colbert directed his classmates to move the tassels on their
mortarboards from right to left, signifying their graduation.
And with a toss of their caps high into the air, the graduates
recessed out of Severance Hall to begin the next journey
of their lives.

Treasurer Lisa Penn her diploma.

Brandon Festa, Muhammad Jackson, Charles Kennedy, Tawaun Kelly and James Jackson III gesture the

“We’re so good, we’re No. 1 twice!”
Head of the Class, 2011
Four graduates lead the Class of 2011
academically, graduating Summa Cum

3.9 or higher. All are members of the
National Honor Society and received
Academic Honors Diplomas. Each has
been involved in numerous extracurricular activities and won many
awards. Congratulations top grads and

Bearcat is a Soon-to-be Buckeye
At a June 1st press conference on the
steps of Bedford High School, junior
Bearcat football standout Tyvis Powell
announced his verbal commitment to
play for the Ohio State Buckeyes in the
fall of 2012. At his side before a crowd
of 50, including his parents, family
members, friends, classmates, and four
media outlets, were two individuals
who he said helped him through a
difficult year of training and supported
him academically and athletically in
every imaginable way – Bearcat head
football Coach Sean Williams and
Bedford High School Principal Samuel
J. Vawters.
The number eight must be Tyvis’s lucky
number. He announced his decision
only eight days after receiving a scholarship offer from Ohio State, stressing
that for the past eight years it has been
his dream to play for OSU. He was
also the eighth student among the high
school classes of 2011 to make a verbal commitment to the Buckeyes.
About two dozen Bedford High

The 6’4”, 185-pound defensive back
made his announcement two days
after Buckeyes head coach Jim Tressel
resigned. Though he has great respect
for the coach, and while he would have
liked to have played for him, “You go
to college for an education, not for a
coach, or even for football,” he stressed.
“I know I will get a great education at
Ohio State.” Tyvis plans to major in
accounting or sports management.

Thanks to passage of the 1.0-mill Permanent Improvement Levy in November 2010, most of the windows
at Glendale and Central primary schools are being
replaced this summer at a cost of about $600,000.
Central––––––––– 440-439-4225
“These windows are original to both buildings and
some are close to 60 years old,” said Business Manager
Jerry Zgrabik. As a means of reducing heating costs
and saving energy, window replacement has been a
priority in the Bedford District. Last summer, windows
were replaced in the high school cafeteria. These, too,
were original to the building.

Glendale Students Are Award-Winning Playwrights
Over the years, Glendale School has produced several winners in the annual Marilyn Bianchi Kids’
Playwriting Festival and this year is no exception. Second graders Taren McElderry and Jessica
Lunge are the latest Glendale winners. Both students had their plays produced on stage in June.
Now in its 33rd year, the Festival is dedicated to the memory of educator Marilyn Bianchi, cofounder of Dobama Theatre in 1959. Each year, the theater selects about 10 to 15 plays from the
hundreds written by students in grades 1-12 from throughout Cuyahoga County.
