“A Community of Achievers”
Dear parents/carers
Thank you for attending Parent Teacher evening last
week. We were very happy with the number of parents
attending and the very positive comments received.
We have started work with our primary schools and
senior college to commence the transition and
enrolment processes. Enrolment packs for 2009
were distributed to parents through our Information
Evening and are also currently being delivered to
primary schools. We would like completed enrolment
forms returned to the school as soon as possible to
help with organising classes for next year.
I’d like to thank teachers and parents who helped
out at our recent Athletics Carnival. Students had a
fantastic day.
As the weather is becoming more humid, could
I please urge you to encourage students to drink
plenty of water to avoid dehydration and its effects.
Last week was also Science Week. Thank you to Gail
Barwick and Travis Saunders for organising a range
of events for students.
We have one staffing change. Ms Bozkurt is returning
south unexpectedly and will be replaced by Mr Peter
McDowell as of next week.
At assembly this week we presented certificates
to students for outstanding and high academic
achievement for Term 2.
A list of these prize
winners is included.

FROM THE NURSE
We all want our kids to be happy and healthy
and to give them a head start in life. We can
by helping them make the best choices, when it
comes to food and physical activity. Helping kids
develop health habits in childhood can make a
difference not only to their body weight and health
now, but also their weight and health as an adult.
Small consistent changes now, can have big payoffs later. Encouraging kids to eat well and be
physically active can be challenging. We need to
encourage kids to enjoy lots of different kinds of
foods. – National Heart Foundation of Australia
2008.
The aim of the Australian Guide to Health Eating is
to encourage you and your children to try a variety
of foods from the five food groups everyday:
*
*
*
*
*
Bread, cereals, rice, pasta, noodles
Vegetables,
Fruit
Milk, yogurt, cheese
Meat, fish, poultry, eggs, nuts, legumes.
These foods provide the important nutrients the
body needs.
For many of us breakfast or after school snacks
need to be quick and easy. Try these quick and
nutritious ideas.
MANGO SMOOTHIE
1 cup plain non-fat yoghurt
1 cup low fat milk
1 small mango
Blend to a smooth consistency. Try different fruits
eg bananas, pawpaw.
YOGHURT CRUNCH
1 cup low-fat yoghurt
1 sliced banana
1 chopped apple
2 tbsp chopped nuts

is voluntary, flexible, non-competitive. The participants have opportunities to reach goals and develop skills such as goal setting, teamwork, decision
making and leadership. The program provides the
motivation to undertake a variety of voluntary and
challenging activities”.

CAREER AWARENESS PROGRAMS
On 21st of August, sixty Year 9 students had the opportunity to take part in various local industry tours.
Industry Tours are designed to give students the chance to investigate a specific local industry. The
tours offer students the opportunity to converse with various employees ranging from apprentices to
management and to observe some of the day to day operations of a business.
The day was a great success with students visiting a variety of local businesses. Dripstone would like
to thank all the businesses that participated and opened their doors and allowed us access to behind the
scenes. Without the support of these local businesses, programs such as these would not exist.

That’s seven wins in eight years! One of the reasons
why they won was the number of participants who
entered the events.
As part of Dripstone’s Science week program, the Year
8’s participated in a Science excursion to the Territory
Wild Life Park on Thursday 21 – Friday 22 August. The
Year 8 students had lots of fun studying and observing
the various habitats of different organisms including
animals, fish and insects. The Year 8’s were separated
into two groups and visited different areas of the park
such as the nocturnal house, the billabong, the aquarium
and the aviary. They also attended a presentation about
native raptors. The Year 8’s were amazed by the special
features and adaptations that enable different organisms
to survive in the wild. The students were required to
sketch a diagram of the Water Buffalo enclosure and
an area in the aviary, as well as overcome their fear
of snakes in order to enter the nocturnal house (which
displayed a variety of snakes…). They also got their
daily exercise from walking around the park.
The Year 8’s were able to collect information about
different adaptations and habitats of animals as well as
the needs of both animals in captivity and visitors to the
park. This will come in useful for the next assessment
piece for the Year 8’s – a combined Maths/Science
assignment to design a wildlife park and draw it to scale
- not to mention the fun students had that day! The Year
8’s will be having another Science based excursion to
the Casuarina Coastal Reserve next Wednesday 2 and
Thursday 3 September as further research into local
habitats.
