Layette Nightgown Instructions
Important Notes:



We sew ONE size, which is 12 months.
If you choose to sew a different size, you may alter the pattern accordingly.
Layette Nightgowns may range from 3-24 months.
Materials List:





16” X 24” Piece of Pattern Paper (Note: This will be for half of the gown pattern)
Flannel or Light Weight Material (No See-through Material Allowed) measuring 45” wide and 1 ¼ yard
8” X 12” Piece of Material for Facing
Ribbon: Two 9” length of ¼” ribbon for closure

Pattern on Paper (Note: This will be half of the Layette Nightgown pattern)
1.
Lay a 16” X 24” piece of Pattern Paper on Cutting Board. The top of this paper will be the fold line at the
shoulder and sleeves.

Left side at top corner will be the neck; measure and mark 1 ½” down and 2” across, with a curve (if needed,
an object can be used to trace the curve for the neck, like shown above).

Across the top of the pattern, measure 13”, and then mark 5” down. At the end of the 5” down, mark 5”
across, this is for the sleeves. (Note: When altering the size, a sleeve should be no less than 3 inches)

From under the arm to the end of the gown, the measurement will be 17’ to 18’ long. Total length of gown
will measure 22’ to 23’ long.

From the center fold to the edge of the gown, measurement will be 8”.
6.
If needed, use an object to trace the curve for under the arm, like shown above.

Cut out Layette Gown Pattern, like shown above.
Cutting out the Material and Facing for the Layette Nightgown

Fold fabric in half lengthwise with salvage sides together and lay pattern paper on top of fabric like shown
above. Cut out neck line, along the edge of sleeve, under the arm, and along the side. (Note: Do not cut
along the fold line or the shoulder)

Open fabric with sleeves extended in the middle with the two fold line edges facing you. Fold the 8” X 12”
Facing Material in half measuring 4” X 12”. Lay back the fold line edges of the Layette Nightgown to slip the
folded piece of Facing Material under with fold line facing you as shown above. Position the Facing Material
so 2” are on the back side and 6” are on the front side of the Layette Nightgown Material.
10. Cut out center of the Facing Material for the neck by following the same cut-out line from the Layette
Nightgown Material as shown above.

11. Split the Facing and Layette Nightgown Materials completely through the fold lines on the front side.
Instructions for Sewing the Layette Nightgown
12. Serge the Facing all around the outside.

13. Open Layette Nightgown Material flat and place Facing Material flat on top of the gown as shown above.
Pin the Facing to the Gown Material to keep in place if needed. With a Serger, sew up starting at the bottom,
go around the neck and down the other side. Following the dotted line as shown above.
14. Now that the Facing has been stitched on, fold the Layette Nightgown in half like shown above. Pin up the
front of the gown opening starting from the bottom going up, including 2” up into the facing, which will leave
a 4” opening at the front of the neck. With a Serger, sew starting at the bottom going up 2” onto the facing.

15. While the gown is still open and before sewing the sides, serge along the edges of both sleeves and along
the bottom edge of the gown. Top-Stitch the 4” front opening on one side going up, then around the neck
and down the other side of the 4” front opening. Then, Bar-tack twice across the bottom edge beneath the
front opening to reinforce this area. Following the dotted line as shown above.
16. Lay the Layette Nightgown inside out with both front and back sides together. Serge, starting at the outer
edge of the each sleeve, going under the arm, and ending at the bottom edge of the gown. Repeat this on
the other side. Follow the dotted lines as shown above.
17. Hem around both sleeves.
18. Hem around bottom of Layette Nightgown.

19. Tack a 9” ribbon at the top of each side of the 4” opening. Pin ribbons if needed, before tacking. Tie the
ribbon in a bow for closure.
