To promote a basic understanding of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Principles Tools Page 4 Of 6 Flashcards – Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs Calculators List of items - needs and wants Blank lined pad paper for personal lists Printed tables to calculate Accommodation Supplement Workbook for personal recording of results Needs And Wants ©CBNZ 2014 Task 1 Essential needs (back to basics) 1. In your workbook under section 'my list of stuff', ask each person to make an initial list of personal Needs/Wants they can think of themselves i.e. without prompting or suggestions from the tutor. 2. Ask each person to identify each item as either NEED and WANT - mark with "N" or "W". Maslow's Hierarchy Of Needs 3. Review and briefly explain Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs triangle which lists five basic human needs. The hierarchy starts from the bottom up as listed below. We are focusing on level 1. level 5) Self actualization - to feel that they can "do what they were born to do". level 4) Sense of self esteem - created uniquely with purpose and meaning. level 3) To give and receive love, affection, feel a sense of belonging. level 2) A sense of security - safety from danger. level 1) Physiological need - oxygen, food, water, clothing, shelter. NOTE: Physiological needs - level 1 - food, water, clothing, shelter. You may need electricity and medical costs as an essential item. Also add cellphone in cases of safety needs. 4. From the list of personal Needs/Wants recorded by each person on the paper supplied, check to see what items on their list of NEEDS matches Maslow's hierarchy level 1. • Discuss the differences in a group/pairs as appropriate. • Conclusion - we don't need much stuff but we want it all the same. 5. In your workbook, go to the section on "MY NEEDS AND WANTS". Record your "level 1 needs" from the above activity and copy these to your workbook. Include the "costs" of each item. 6. Additional Commitments In your workbook, go to the section on "MY NEEDS AND WANTS". In the area marked "current Commitments" record your "current Commitments" and their amounts. NOTE: "Current Commitments" should only include items that are currently being paid and cannot be stopped - e.g cellphone (current contracts), court fines, rates etc. The remaining items can be moved into the WANTS category. We will look at these in a different session to empower new thinking and choices – both now and longer term. 7. Ordering your Wants List your “WANTS” and place them into order ("1st, 2nd, 3rd 4th 5th) in your workbook and total the column. • Check Each Persons Totals Are Correct Page 5 Of 6 Needs And Wants ©CBNZ 2014 Questions for group discussion and further learning choose relevant ones. What is the cost of our most basic needs? Where are our most our “WANTS” advertised e.g. billboards, TV, facebook…? Where are our most basic needs advertised? – there aren’t as many. Why are there so few ads for our “BASIC NEEDS” compared to our “WANTS”? What slick advertisements do you know of that entice us to spend? How do we “feel” when we have our most basic needs covered – thankful? Why might we include “other items” in our most basic needs? e.g. medications, Lotto. Scripture References Addendum Matthew 4:4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Comment Physical necessities are important but they are not the only thing to focus on. Proverbs 3:1-2 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity. Comment A key to a peaceful, prosperous life is to follow God's teaching... including Christ's teachings on money. Proverbs 22:9 The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor. Be generous and share. It is an expression of Love for others.
