Local Ministry Area of Cunedda An inauguration service took place in St. Mary's on the 19th December 2016 to mark the beginning of a new phase of our parish life. The Archdeacon of Carmarthen, The Venerable Roger Hughes presided at the service along with Fr. Dewi Davies, Area Dean of Cydweli and Revd. Leigh Richardson, Area Dean of Carmarthen. Our Vicar, Revd. Trevor Copeland was licensed as the Team Leader for the new Ministry Area of Cunedda, which incorporates St. Mary's, St. Teilo, St. Maelog, with the Parish of St. Ishmael's, so becoming a group of six churches. We look forward to working together. These are exciting times for our diocese, with the Installation and Enthronement of our new Bishop, Canon Joanne Penberthy taking place in February. We send our congratulations and keep her in our prayers as she takes up her new role. Some of you may have met her at the service on the 19 th December as she did attend that event. Best Wishes to our Vicar, recovering from a fall last month. We wish him a speedy recovery from his injuries. The Week of prayer for Christian Unity – Wednesday 18th January saw the beginning of the week of Prayer for Christian Unity. In Kidwelly this marked a new initiative which all church leaders had agreed upon: that a pilgrimage take place around the churches and chapels of the town on the 18 th January. With around 20-30 people from all denominations attending, the day began with Revd. Flis Randall introducing the day entitled 'Crossing Barriers' and leading a short service in Trinity English Methodist Church; walking then to Siloam Baptist Chapel where Nesta Thomas led the prayers in Welsh. Onwards then to the grounds of Capel Sul, where we gave thanks for the witness of the members over the years. Morfa Chapel was the next stop on our walk where Revd. Sims read a lesson and led the prayers. From here we went to Our Lady and St. Cadog Roman Catholic Church in Priory Street where Father Richard led the service. We were welcomed at The Well by Pastor Mark Jennings and his wife Becky and where refreshments were provided by the members there. Prayers were said in English and Korean before making our way to our final destination at St. Mary's Church. Here, Revd. Flis took the place of our Vicar, Revd. Trevor who was unable to be with us as he was recovering from a recent fall. Together with Brenda Evans, and members of St. Mary's Flis introduced hymns, prayers and reflections to end what had been a wonderful experience of friendship and unity. It is hoped that this sort of event could be encouraged in the future. St. Mary’s News Message from Dee Dee is looking for volunteers to help with setting up a Messy Church group. The generosity and kindness shown to him are greatly valued. Valentine's Day reminds us of the importance of expressing our love to those close to us. But how can we go beyond simply flowers and a card? Jesus says: ‘A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another’ (John 13:34). How can we express love in our everyday relationships like Jesus? Listening We need to listen to others, just as Jesus did. He asked questions of people and waited for them to process their answer. How well do we listen to others? When with somebody, do we find ourselves already thinking of what we want to say before they’ve finished speaking. Listening takes time; you can’t rush it! Touching Jesus reached out to touch the untouchables in his world, including lepers, the sick and children. One survey has suggested that we all need at least 8-10 meaningful touches a day to maintain emotional health! A warm handshake, touch on the arm or hug can be of real value. Of course, it should be appropriate touch – helpful for the other person not just for ourselves. Speaking Jesus’ conversation was always full of grace and truth (John 1:14). Do we speak words of grace, by offering comfort, giving encouragement or expressing care and concern? However, we should also be ready to speak words of truth, in asking for forgiveness, seeking reconciliation or addressing conflict. Where is the challenge for us in expressing love this Valentine’s Day? Films make people think. This provides a wonderful opportunity for Christians to help people to think about the spiritual and moral issues raised by those films. And so it is that EthosMedia.org is working closely with Disney, and other film companies, to create spiritual reflections on new films as they come out in the cinema or on DVD. Parish Pump has teamed up with EthosMedia.org for the next five issues, to offer you a series of thought-provoking reflections on various new films. Take a look at the following article: It was good to welcome MU members from Ferryside and other visitors to our January meeting when Peter Judge gave us an interesting talk about the early stages of Dementia and how to care for those who need attention. Our February meeting will be the AGM and Social evening at 7.00pm in the Parish Room on Wednesday 8th. We extend an invitation to new and past members to join us. Given that our churches are now the Local Ministry Area of Cunedda it is envisaged that we will work together on a more regular basis and will be involved in the Carmarthen Deanery from now on. I have heard from Barbara Quick the Deanery Leader with an invitation that on the 20th February there is a Deanery Meeting at 2.30pm in the Ivy Bush. Usually we get 1or2 of the officials from each Branch, but anybody is welcome. Also arranged is a Quiet Evening on Monday 13th March at 6.30pm in Llangunnor Church with Rev. Dr. Emma Whittick giving the address. Our members would be very welcome to both of these. Our Wave of Prayer this year is on February 25th between 10.20am-10.40am. Mothering Sunday is on March 26th – the Make a Mother's Day gift catalogue is at the back of church. Do take a look at it and help the work of the Mothers' Union. Meet - Alice Leadbeter – our Marathon Runner! Towards the end of last year we offered you, our members, as well as supporters throughout Mothers’ Union, the chance to run for us in the 2017 London Marathon. We are delighted to announce member Alice Leadbeter from the Ely diocese has secured the spot! Not only will Alice be training hard over the coming months to ensure she is ready to meet the 26 mile challenge, she also aims to raise £2000 for Mothers’ Union. The money will go towards Mothers’ Union work throughout the UK & Ireland and worldwide, providing Christian care for those in need. Alice is a teacher and a mum of three whose Mum, Susan Baker, has been a member for over thirty years, she recalls “Mum has been a member of the Mothers’ Union for most of my life. I always admired the work she did in the local prison, running parenting courses and supporting the women’s shelter through the charity Alice’s Mum, Susan, is now in fact the Provincial President of Ely diocese and Alice herself recently became a member as well. On this opportunity to fundraise for Mothers’ Union Alice says; “The opportunity to represent Mothers’ Union in the London marathon allows me to capitalise on my role as an ambassador, passing on all the amazing things that the Mothers’ Union does to a wide, diverse audience. As well as informing people about Mothers’ Union who have possibly not heard about it before and raising the money that makes such a difference to so many people, my true goal is to get more people actively involved and supporting the work and projects as this would have a far longer, positive effect on The Mothers’ Union. I see the actual running of the marathon purely as a catalyst for these far more important goals.” Kidwelly News and Diary Events Kidwelly Welfare Committee Coffee mornings in the Rugby Club, Kidwelly at 10.30am. Ieuan Hughes (Cadeirydd/Chairman.) 11 Caedmon - the poetic shepherd Caedmon (d 680) should be the patron saint of all farmers who enjoy humming to themselves as they do the lambing this Spring. For Caedmon of Whitby was a bit like David in the Bible – he grew up as a simple herdsman out on the hills and enjoyed composing songs and poetry for himself while watching his flocks. Like David, Caedmon also had a keen awareness of God, and used his creative gift to express his devotion and love for his Creator. When his poems and songs became known to others, they liked them so much that soon Caedmon left his sheep in order to become a monk. This gave him time to compose many poems based on the stories in the Bible: from Creation and Genesis, to the Exodus and entry of the Jews into the promised land, to the birth, passion and resurrection of Christ, and finally to the future Last Judgement, Heaven, and Hell. Then one day Caedmon suddenly announced that he knew he was going to die soon. And so he did, in a state of charity and peace with everyone. There was great mourning. Sadly, only nine lines of his poetry has survived, and we have the great historian, Bede, to thank for even that much. But in his time, Caedmon’s gift of telling Christian stories in the vernacular must have been of great value in evangelising the common folk. Recipe Page Our recipe this month is shared by Kath Nicholas. Triple Chocolate, Hazelnut, Rum & Raisin Cake 2oz. Cocoa; 6tbsp boiling water; 4oz. Hazelnuts; 6oz. Margarine; 6oz. Caster sugar; 3 eggs; 7oz. SR flour; 6oz. plump raisins; 4oz. Chocolate buttons or 4oz. or a bar chopped into bits. (soak raisins overnight in 2/3tbsp dark rum) Grease and line (or just use a ready-made liner – no greasing) two one pound cake tins. Spread hazelnuts on baking tray and into oven 180°C (fan) until browned (take care not to let them burn) Rub in paper towels to get skins off. Cool. Put cocoa in bowl, add boiling water and mix to a smooth paste and allow to cool. Cream marg and sugar, beat eggs and add a little at a time. Beat in flour and cocoa mix. Stir in nuts, raisins, and chocolate buttons and spoon into tins. Cook 350°F, 160°C in a fan oven for (this is a guess as I always double up and make 5) about 40/45 mins. Should be springy and buttons give undercooked appearance. If you over cook chocolate cake it can be dry. Melt chocolate and pour over the top and leave in tin until chocolate has hardened. It freezes well but chocolate gets a white 'bloom'. Leave at room temperature and chocolate will look normal again. If you have a recipe to share, please send it to me by the 16 th of February for the next issue. Congratulations to Mrs Muriel Thomas for being awarded the Archbishop of Wales' Certificate of Merit in Church Music for her contribution to church music for over sixty years. Mrs Thomas, her sister Mrs Eileen Jones Capel y groes, Peniel and eight other people were presented by the Archbishop of Wales Dr Barry Morgan on Saturday January 7th at a service of evensong at Llandaff Cathedral. Mrs Thomas and her sister were both nominated by their youngest sister Mrs Geinor Davies who is very proud of her sisters' achievements but regrets that she herself didn't continue her music tuition. The certificate is designed to be a way of affirming good and faithful work done in the field of church music throughout the churches and chapels in Wales; it is an interdenominational certificate. The Archbishop of Wales in his address said that the awards were a way for the wider church to recognise the important part music plays in worship and to thank those that make it happen. Once again many congratulations from the Vicar, your fellow organists Lynwen and Carys and all church members for your dedicated contribution to church music at St. Maelog's church. There will be a service in St. Maelog's at 7.00pm on Ash Wednesday – this year on March 1st.
