The Topics Collection is an ongoing series on modern bridge theory with monthly publications, authored by Eric Rodwell et al. and edited by Paul Maris. Topic 29 Heeman. Responding to 1NT by Wim Heemskerk Wim Heemskerk was born in Leiden, The Netherlands, 06‐29‐1959. He studied mathematics at Leiden University and management science at Erasmus University Rotterdam. After working for several years as a mathematical researcher, in 1990 he made a switch to become a full time bridge‐ and chesstrainer. In the period 1990‐2005 he published several books on bridge, had columns in newspapers and wrote articles in Dutch bridgemagazines. Apart from teaching bridge he also trained new bridgeteachers on behalf of the Dutch Bridge Federation and coached the Dutch Schools team (2001‐2005). Since 2000 he is a member of the Jack‐team. ‘Jack’ is the strongest computer bridge program in the world, recently winning its eighth world title in Lille, France! Heemskerk is responsible for the bidding in this program. © 2013 NewInBridge. Note: The diagrams that follow have been made by Ignacio Jiménez, from Madrid, in an attempt to facilitate all the players of the bridge community to learn and memorize this interesting development of the one no‐trump opening, created by Win Heemskerk and published in Topic 29 in Newinbridge webpage.(www.newinbridge.com). This work is just a reorganization and a presentation in a different view of the material contained in the above mentioned publication. Going directly to original, the reader can find some bridge hands bided using Heeman and also sometimes, more details of sequences. The abbreviations and symbols used are the following: #= No trumps Qbid= Cuebid Inv.= Invitative to Game ~= No or “un…” T.P.= To play Inv+.= Invitative or more →= “Transfer” M= any mayor suit Invslam= slamish ↔= “Puppet” m= any minor suit Bal.= Balanced hand <= equal or less Max= Maximun strength min= Minimun strength This document is structured as follows: This is the first page, then comes the first bid of responder (it’s a must to memorize), then a 3x2 sheet (which I recommend to print in paper and paste it in 3 rows and 2 columns –the first 3 pages on the left of the sheet and the 3 last on the right), then one page of the whole system (in a very small font, just to know how to make the sheet in paper) and finally a review of the opening bid and developments depending on the distribution and strength of responder’s hand. Hope you enjoy and good luck with the task.
