Blowflies, Death, and Clue
How many NGSS standards does law enforcement use when carrying out a crime scene investigation?
Let’s explore how forensic entomologists use the blowfly’s lifecycle to help solve crimes. As we briefly
step into their shoes, we’ll discuss how this activity can help bring NGSS standards to your class in an
engaging way. (A. Copeland, 9-12)
Science for All Learners
Participants in this workshop will explore ways to expand everyday science lessons to meet the needs of
all learners. Every classroom has a wide range of abilities in students. Join this workshop to learn various
ways to make your science lesson inclusive of all children and abilities. (T. Richier & M. Baker, K-6)
Classroom 2/Cardinal Room
Classroom 2/Cardinal Room
The Engineering Design Process: So You Think You Can Dance?
Explore engaging lessons and activities that integrate components of STEAM into the middle school
classroom. In this session, you’ll make a motorized toy that seems to dance using a recycled materials and
a DC motor. (R. Anderson, 4-8)
Classroom 3/Silver Maple Room
Comparing Fractions With Fraction Strips & Fruit Roll Ups
This presentation provides teachers with a sample lesson how to differentiate teaching equivalent
fractions with the use of fraction strips and fruit roll-ups. (S. Torres, K-5)
Founders Room
Inquiry-Based Assessment: Chemical Reactions
In this presentation, participants will learn how to utilize age-appropriate images and hands-on
experiences in a chemistry classroom. Learn how to use the inquiry method as an assessment tool by
engaging with the content of chemical reactions. Examples will be tailored for both the high-school and
middle-school audience. (M. Gomez, 6-12)
Look up! Art Deco architecture style & patterns…Open up to the world of architectural
design around you and at the Brookfield Zoo.
Chicagoland is full of spectacular Art Deco design & architecture including at the Brookfield Zoo. How
can you turn your students on to the architectural wonders around them by learning how to identify
the distinctive Art Deco style popular from the 1920s-1940s in architecture, art, and consumer goods.
Learn about utilizing a new free web platform that is a wonderful new teaching resource…the Chicago
Collections Consortium. Over 22 major history organizations are uploading historic images from Illinois
into one virtual space that is easily accessible for teachers & students, resulting in amazing opportunities
for exploration. (C. Owens, 4-12)
Classroom 3/Silver Maple Room
NGSS Modeling the DNA Way
Come learn how to use inquiry and collaborative learning to teach DNA. This participatory approach to
the DNA model helps students to build both their knowledge and skills with systems and system models.
Discussion will focus on the limitations of the model as well as ways to strengthen the commonly used
lab project of building a DNA molecule. This session aligns to NGSS HS-LS-1. DOUBLE SESSION *Please
plan to attend also during Session 3 so session is not disrupted by early departures. (J. Reynolds, 9-12)
Founders Room
Engineering for Young Audiences
Is it possible to teach the engineering design process to primary learners? Absolutely! Learn how
primary learners practice critical thinking and problem-solving while growing in their social-emotional
development. Practical examples and lessons learned (from both educator and learner perspectives) will
be shared. (J. Meyers, preK-3)

Meet in the Lobby promptly a 12:45 p.m.
Science Fair Prep
Learn ideas for helping your students determine their question, isolate variables, locate and keep track
of sources, ways to prevent plagiarizing, plus so much more. Turn the challenge of Science Fair into a
success! (A. Kovacs, 4-12)
How To View The Zoo.
Join us for Operation Observation! Learn to focus on animal attributes and habitats to make the most
of your visits as you are guided though a selected area of the zoo. Learn fun facts and stories about the
animals, and find out how to make the most of your trip to Brookfield Zoo. (CZS Instructors, preK-adult)
(Note: Your group has been pre-assigned. Check your Welcome Letter to find which group you have been
assigned. We kindly request that you do not switch so that we have equal numbers for each instructor.)
Classroom 2/Cardinal Room
Guess Who’s Coming By Land, Sea, and Air?
In this session, focus on using one specific human activity and analyze that impact from various
organisms’ perspectives. This session aligns to LSC2 - Observing the impact on different species’
populations due to human activities. (K. Preston, 6-8)
Classroom 3/Silver Maple Room

Science for Bilingual Learners: Creating Cultural Relevance
Presenters will highlight how their thematic unit called New Plants emphasizes cultural connections
between children’s homes and their formal learning environments. In this unit, hands-on learning
activities promote content gains for technical vocabulary, language development, and observation skills.
(A. Guzman & P. Keating, preK-3)
