heard, and connecting it to previously learned information.
Thoughts:

I avoided closed-mindedness by recognizing when I disagreed with other people’s ideas but allowed them
to finish their thought without interruption. I considered what might be right or important about their idea
instead of just rejecting it.
Thoughts:

I avoided selective listening by recognizing that I have a set of beliefs based on my cultural upbringing,
spiritual preferences, and past experiences. I made a conscious effort to understand the speaker’s
viewpoint even when it differed from my own.
Thoughts:

I avoided oversimplifying complex ideas by listening for the full picture including details, reasons, and
supporting evidence.
Thoughts:

I avoided judging the speaker instead of the message. I did not allow myself to be distracted by the
speaker’s mannerisms, dress, or their method of delivering the message. I focused on understanding the
message and the speaker’s point of view.
Thoughts:

I was able to identify the speaker’s main point or position on an issue.
