Here, we will start our journey on the Katy Trail. At 287 miles, this crushed limestone path is America's longest rails-to-trail bike path. It meanders along the Missouri River and across the entire state. Don't worry, you don't have to ride the whole thing! Notice how quickly the urban landscape is transformed to tranquil countryside. Our introduction to Missouri wine country begins at Mount Pleasant Estates in the small town of Augusta. Founded in 1859, Mount Pleasant is located in the Augusta Appellation, the first American Viticultural Area. Enjoy lunch at the cafe before we tour the original hand-dug cellars, dating back to 1881, and learn about the old world winemaking techniques still in use today. Continue by bike or take a ride in the van as we follow the Katy Trail westward. Take a break for some ice cream and live music on the porch of the Peers Store. This historic trading point has served as a railway stop, a Missouri River shipping point and a general store for the local farming community from 1896 until it closed in 2012. Now, thanks to the preservation efforts of the Katy Land Trust, it is a welcome rest stop for cyclists who ride the Katy Trail. From here, we will continue to the quaint town of Hermann and settle into our home for the next two nights. Hermann was settled by German immigrants in 1837 and has worked hard to preserve its culture and heritage. Enjoy a view of town and the Missouri River from your room in a restored 19th-century wine cottage perched high on the hillside. Cap off this day with a private dinner at the Tin Mill Restaurant - housed in a re-imagined historic grain elevator. Try wines from their vineyard as you relax and take in the beauty from the front porch of the 1905 farmhouse. Before & After: St. Louis, Missouri St. Louis is known for the iconic Gateway Arch, completed in 1965 and standing 630 feet tall over downtown St. Louis on the Mississippi River. A national monument, the Arch commemorates the greatest exploration in American history - Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery Expedition in 1804. You will trace some of their route during this trip! But if the Arch represents the "front porch" of St. Louis, the city's big, beautiful "backyard" is the Missouri River Valley. If you have an extra day or two -- or more! -- before or after your trip, there is much to do while in the St. Louis area. You can ride the entire length of the 287-mile Katy Trail or visit Confluence Point State Park to stand where the two greatest rivers in America meet. If you want more urban experiences, visit the new Blues Museum, the one-of-a-kind City Museum, or spend time at the world-renowned Missouri Botanical Garden. Add some detours for award-winning microbreweries or tour the historic Anheuser-Busch Brewery. And since you'll be visiting in October, you may see some Cardinals post-season action around town!
