ADOPT A PILOT
The Adopt a Pilot program is going really good
for the fifth grade! A pilot from Southwest
Airlines comes and talks about his job, how a
plane flies, and the different parts and routes
he takes. His name is Captain Ken McAloon.
Our captain teaches Mr. Lashenik’s class,
Mrs. Berry’s class, Miss Kelly’s class, Mrs.
Olson’s class, and Miss West’s class. Our pilot
shares pictures of land marks he flies over
and some of his pictures are pictures of his
airplanes he flies. He does not get paid for
the Adopt-a-pilot program because he is a
volunteer and he likes coming and talking to
us!

On April 25, 2012, LIS and WIS will be having a seventh annual
book battle. The book battle is a competition between students from
Westchester and Liberty Intermediate Schools, and their knowledge of
this year’s chosen books. This year’s “series” includes books from Carl
Hiassen, and Mike Lupica. You can receive AR points from 0.5 to 12.
The current standings are (WIS, 3; LIS, 3). Each contestant receives a
team shirt, and a prize pack. The winners obtain a 1st place medallion,
and a Barnes and Noble gift card. Who will break the tie? You can still
sign up until April 11th, so if you like to read and want to be a part of the
fun, sign up with Mrs. Disney in the Media Center.
Liberty Intermediate School hosted the Second
Annual Exploration Fair in March. This fair
encouraged students to create projects for extra
credit. If you wanted to have a partner you could. The
project did not have to be a scientific one though. It
could range from social studies to English to music or
Art. The scientific report must have had a hypothesis
and all of the other parts of the scientific method. All
projects needed to have a poster with their name and
pictures and other information they have learned.
Students’ projects ranged from information
about clouds, to actual mastodon bones found in a
field nearby, to population of cities, to how fast
apples would turn brown, to tessellations, to how
water adds drag to your time in swimming. We
learned a lot from these projects. GREAT JOB!
The Writer’s Fair also happened during this time,
too. LIS has had a Writer’s Fair for about seven years
so far. The fair included work from current students.
There were many great examples of written work.
Great job LIS students.
Student of the Month
The things a person can do to become a student of the month is being the best they can
be, helping other people when they need help, and being nice.

Sea World is just as the title explains. It is world full of sea animals. There are
also a lot of attractions and shows. Many of the shows include dolphins to
gigantic whales… killer whales that is. The one thing that is holding the whole
Sea World together is Shamu the giant whale. In my opinion, he is the best
attraction there. Besides learning about animal life, there are thrill seeker rides
such as Rip Tide Rescue, manatee, Journey to Atlantis, and Wild Arctic Ride.
The Wild Arctic Ride is a giant room with a 3-D screen that moves around on a
peg. After the rides, you might want to relax and watch a show with a dolphin or
killer whale. The best show there in my opinion was the dolphin show! They even
act as their predators…Sharks! These are some of the reasons you should go to
Sea World. I hope you get a chance to go to Sea World. It is a great place to go
on spring or summer vacation. If you do go, I hope you enjoy it. It is a lot of FUN!

Talent Show
Did you see the Liberty’s Most Wanted Talent Show last
month? Well, in case you missed it, you’re going to hear about the
whole thing right here! Remember, you heard it from us first.
On February 9th, you watched the best performers in the school
do acts like singing, dancing, cheerleading, and in one case, Rubix
Cubing! This was a great show! If you missed it though, we’re
bringing you the whole story!
The show showed off the talents of many singers. I think we
can all agree everybody had a great voice! Even before that though,
was the Trojan Intramural Cheer Team! Many flips and stunts were
pulled off with perfection! We also had the privilege of watching a
few dancers take the stage! One unique act was unscrambling a
Rubix Cube in less than two minutes!!!
As you have heard about, we have had our Talent Show here at
LIS. I think all of the performers did a wonderful job! If you thought
that they were good, you should go see the Duneland Exchange Club
Talent Show! Kids from K-12 will be performing at the Chesterton
High School just for you and the judges’ votes! The show is on
Saturday, April 21. Come see the show! Maybe you’ll see someone
you know…

Turtle week is an exciting event for all students
and staff to have an amazing time! First off, we play
A LOT of games. No, not board games, olympic
games, such as….. Obstacle courses, flipper races,
tug-of- war, and terrapin spin! Second, we always
have a turtle King and Queen! There’s a turtle King
and Queen for 6th grade, then a turtle court for 5th
grade. Turtle week is an annual event. Fifth grade
classes will be paired up with 6th grade classes to
compete in the Turtle Olympics. Teachers will be
doing different turtle activities in their classrooms.
Band and orchestra will be playing the “Turtle
Anthem.” On Tuesday, will be hat day, Wednesday
will be the turtle hunt, Thursday will be P.J. day,
and Friday will be crazy, green hair day. I hope that
you all have an awesome time during turtle week. I
wish to see you all there!
During the Water Cycle Presentation sponsored by the Storm
Water Team, we learned many different things. There were four
stations. In the first station there was a worksheet where we found
bugs and this determined how clean the river would be. Depending on
the type of bugs and how many bugs, the chart would help someone to
know how clean or dirty the water is. In the second station we had to
name what kinds of trash and/or pollution could come from certain
areas in a neighborhood 3-D model. Areas included the beach, farm,
factory, home, and a highway. In the third station you acted like you’re
a water molecule moving through the water cycle. In this station you
made a bracelet when you visited each station in the water cycle.
Finally, in the last station you played a game of water cycle bingo.
Some people were lucky enough to win prizes in bingo like a lunch
box or a stress drop in the shape of a water drop. We learned so much
during this presentation. Thank you to the Storm Team for coming to
our school to present.
Whitney Houston just died recently on February 11,
2012. She was born August 9, 1963. She stunned the world
with her dazzling voice. She released numerous hits like I
Feel like Dancing, and I Will Always Love You. She won
several awards from many award shows. She was a best
friend of soul music superstar, Aretha Franklin. Whitney
