Below are wrap ups from some of the Pinot masters you heard from last issue as well as some new voices. Dick Shea, Owner, Shea Wine Cellars & Vineyard, Yamhill-Carlton The 2015 growing season was warm and dry. I am told it was the warmest growing season on record for the northern Willamette Valley. Fortunately it stayed cool at night and there were no extraordinary heat spikes. We don't irrigate but the canopy stayed green and stress free all season long. Vines like hot and dry! It was our earliest harvest ever but not by a lot. We are really excited about the quality. It will be among our best vintages ever. The excitement about the vintage among the winemaking community is palpable. The wine is all in barrel now and malolactic fermentation is just starting. Clearly the wines will be big, lush and mouth-coating. Aromas and flavors are really rich and alcohols are not excessive for the degree of ripeness. Can't wait to show these wines off when we do barrel tastings at our May open house. Bernard Lacroute, Owner, Willakenzie Estate, Willamette Valley The 2015 growing season started with an early bud break, approximately three weeks earlier than usual and stayed about the same three weeks ahead of normal throughout the season. We started harvest on Sept. 2 instead of our typical third week of September. We experienced minimum sunburn and no disease at all in the vineyard. The quality of the fruit was excellent and we had a bountiful harvest. Although we cropped to one cluster per shoot, the yield per acre was 20 percent to 25 percent greater than average due the higher cluster weights. This was our largest tonnage ever at Willakenzie Estate. The wines are reminiscent of the 2012 and 2014 vintages with fruit forward profiles, but yet very nice acidity. It was a record year with great quality. Dan Fishman, Winemaker, The Donum Estate, Carneros WINNER James Beard Award For Newsletter Writing PinotReport / Issue #106 The two things that stood out about the 2015 vintage were the low yields and the recurring heat spikes. Uneven weather during flowering was responsible for the low yields. There were several heat spikes in August and September that lasted multiple days and led to some tricky picking decisions. In the end we at Donum Estate were fortunate that our crop levels were not severely low, and also that ripeness tended to be achieved in between the heat spikes as opposed to during them. The quality in barrel looks to be outstanding, with the low yields leading to rich, concentrated flavors with enough tannin for structure, but not so much as to add bitterness. 1 Email: [email protected] OUT IN PINOT COUNTRY Mike Cox, Winemaker, Schug Carneros Estate, Carneros contributed to this challenge: First, the harvest started early, on Aug. 10, and there was a heat wave shortly thereafter, causing some very premature dehydration, advancement of sugars and, most importantly, huge variation in ripeness within blocks, and even within each vine. Second, it was difficult to get a true “random” sample, which we usually try to do without looking too much because it imparts bias into the sample. This year we learned the hard way that in a year like this, sampling required a great deal of looking and bias in order to get a proper sample. On the plus side, the crop was small to moderatelysized this year, but quality was excellent. Although the season started early, we were able to achieve ample hang-time and we are seeing excellent tannin structure, beautiful concentration and plenty of natural acidity in the vineyards that were harvested early. Like most winemakers, I was concerned about the onset of an early harvest brought about by a warm spring and low crop levels. While yields were even less than low estimates, the ripening patterns were even and the pace of harvest was very manageable. The intensity of the fruit has been most encouraging and the wines are showing great extraction, depth, and most importantly, balance. I am looking forward to seeing the wines mature in the caves this winter and reach their full potential quality! Ross Cobb/Katy Wilson, Winemakers, Anaba Wines, Carneros As we predicted at the beginning of harvest, yields were down due to the one of the coolest springs on record. Shatter was significant, especially in the Sonoma Coast vineyards closest to the coast (1-5 miles out) where yields were less than one ton per acre. Vineyards a little further inland (5-15 miles from the coast) did not experience quite as much shatter, but still, yields were down about 30 percent over previous vintages. This was a tough year for farmers. While it is often touted that when yields are low, concentration is up—this year there really was incredibly outstanding concentration. The growing conditions that followed the cool spring were ideal through the end of harvest. The Pinot coming into the winery was extraordinarily dark and inky…and delicious. Our Chardonnays are all tasting remarkably good. What may have looked like some inconsistent clusters (lots of chicks and hens), is really developing into some tasty wine. We’re especially pleased with the quality of the estate fruit. We’re happy with the way it and the rest are evolving in the cellar. Across the board, it’s an excellent tasting vintage--from coastal Chardonnays and Pinots to our mountaintop Syrah. Theresa Heredia, Winemaker, Gary Vineyards & Winery, Russian River Valley Nicole Hitchcock, Winemaker, J Vineyards & Winery, Russian River Valley The 2015 vintage was about as notable as it can get, in that it was our earliest-ever at J. Kicking off July 29 with Pinot for our sparkling wines, we were one of the first to begin picking in the Russian River Valley. We anticipate seeing some really lovely, balanced wines. This was a phenomenal harvest for still Pinot, even more remarkable in that it was such a light year following uneven fruit set early in the season. We had smaller clusters, lighter cluster weights and some shot berries, but thanks to good berry flavor and intensity, the wines are looking outstanding. We hand-picked fruit at all of our estate vineyards then hand-sorted at the winery taking care to retain the smaller berries. We didn’t want to lose perfectly ripened berries with that nice skin-to-juice ratio, as they made for great color extraction and intensity in the wines. In the vineyards, there were some short-lived heat waves, always a concern with Pinot, which is so notable for its thin skin and fragility. Fortunately, they passed without impacting the crop; we found that brix levels settled back to desirable levels within a few days of the heat’s abating. Farrell The 2015 vintage is another great year for Russian River Valley wines. Every year I try to make wines that are more balanced than previous years and I think this year was a great year for that. Many of our wines will be well under 14 percent alcohol, but they will have all the richness, freshness and intensity that that I want to see in the Gary Farrell wines. One of the biggest challenges for us this year was trying to get accurate, representative grape samples, which led to some incredibly difficult, frustrating picking decisions. Two main factors PinotReport / Issue #106 David Rossi, Owner/Winemaker, Fulcrum Wines, Multiple AVAs This was a year with some challenges, but I knew if we managed it all properly the year should yield some great Pinots. The biggest and most talked about challenge was yield. Overall our yields were down 30 percent and some properties were down over 66 percent. The uneven weather at bloom and extended fruit set coupled with the drought took its toll. 2 Email: [email protected] OUT IN PINOT COUNTRY Outside of yields, there was the unevenness in ripening not just from vine to vine, but within the clusters. We had clusters with a mix of raisins, unripe grapes and perfectly ripe berries. So the choice was to pick at a sugar/acid level you are comfortable with and risk unripe flavors from those less-ripe berries in the cluster, or allow the fruit to hang longer to allow the ripeness of the lagging grapes to catch up a bit and risk high sugars and overripe flavors from the riper berries. We work with vineyards from Chalone to Anderson Valley and the issues were found across properties, clones, and regions. We decided to let the fruit hang and time will tell if it was the right call. We think it was. Once we started tasting the quality of the fruit, we were both pleased at the abundance and depth of the flavors, but at the same time saddened at how little there was. Now that all the wines are safely in barrel, this outlook remains probably our best and lasting assessment of 2015: Great flavors and amazing depth, just too bad that there’s not more of it. John Peterson, Owner, Mansfield-Dunne Wines, Santa Lucia Highlands In 2015 our Peterson Vineyard (which produces all of the fruit for the Mansfield-Dunne Pinots) experienced a harvest pretty typical for the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation. Very early bud break, due to the gorgeous drought driven weather in January and February, followed by early bloom and flowering, followed by a cold May that shut down the bloom. As a result, we had lots of shatter and chicks and hens clusters. All in all we experienced fewer and smaller clusters with smaller or mixed-size berries. The quality of the fruit was excellent, but our yield was roughly 35 percent to 40 percent lower than normal. The harvest was the earliest by far for our vineyard with all grapes picked by Sept. 3. Fermentation went very well and we are looking forward to an excellent vintage. Boyd Morrison, Winemaker, MacMurray Ranch, Multiple AVAs At MacMurray Estate Vineyards, Pinot Noir is our focus and we are excited to report another phenomenal vintage. We source our Pinot Noir grapes from five estate vineyards in the Russian River Valley AVA and the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. In Russian River Valley, we had lower yields across the board because of unexpected cool, wet weather in May during bloom. However, warm temperatures and dry conditions throughout the remainder of the growing season led to ripe, concentrated flavors with great character. Most notable is an incredible skin-to-juice ratio that may never be repeated at this scale in my lifetime. In Santa Lucia Highlands, we had an early and light harvest similar to the rest of the state. We saw heightened acidity and ripe flavors, the combination of which will make incredible, ageworthy wines. The Pinot Passion Awards! My Pinot Passion Awards showcase the very special people and their very special wines that I believe give us so much to enjoy, and ultimately what makes Pinot Noir so different than other wines. I lead off the awards in this issue with my “Top 12 Pinot Noirs” of 2015 and my “Top 12 Pinot Values” of 2015 to recognize the obvious passion of the winegrowers and winemakers that manifests itself in these incredible wines. Wines chosen come from the wines I have tasted in the past year. I’ve also included several “Honorable Mention” wines. These wines are in many ways the numerical equals of the Top 12 lists, and should be given the same consideration. Drew Huffine, Winemaker, R2 Wine Company, Multiple AVAs The 2015 harvest resists comparisons, but don’t let that fool you for a second into thinking people aren’t going to make them. The defining characteristic of this year was the drought’s effect in the vineyards. Because there has been so little rain over the last few years, the water in the clay and soil is starting to dry out. This coupled with a warm and dry winter forced bud break 10 days to two weeks earlier than last year in most of the vineyards we use and it was already an early year. Finally, the only rain we did get came in a cold, misty May. This prevented pollination—finicky little Pinot Noir flowers!—and made for much less fruit than a normal year. All in all, we saw most sites down 30 percent to 40 percent. Some sites like Bogey Vineyard on the saddle between Carneros and the Petaluma Gap were down more than 60 percent from last year. PINOTREPORT PASSIONATE ABOUT WESTERN PINOT NOIR + Winner, James Beard Foundation Award For Best Newsletter Get The Report… Subscribe Today. PinotReport / Issue #106 20 Email: [email protected] ADMINISTRIVIA… PINOTREPORT How We Taste We taste wine in small flights with no more than 12 wines in a tasting session and one tasting session in a day. While all scores are finalized before the wines are revealed, wines are usually kept open for a day or more to see how the wines develop. Additional commentary may be added based on this, but scores are not changed. PASSIONATE ABOUT WESTERN PINOT NOIR Greg Walter Editor and Publisher Patrick Mullane Contributing Editor All tasting unless otherwise noted is done blind by the Editor. Other tasters may participate, but their scores and comments are not part of the official tasting record. The tasting coordinator (who does not taste) arranges and bags all wines, which are then scored and comments recorded before bags are removed. Duplicate wines are inserted in tastings to measure consistency. PinotReport (ISSN 1539-5197) is published monthly by Carneros Consulting LLC, PO Box 757, Napa, CA 94559. All contents Copyright © 2015 by Carneros Consulting. All Rights Reserved. Short passages may be quoted without permission if proper credit is given to PinotReport. To Subscribe Subscriptions to PinotReport are available at $75 for one year via online and $125 for one year via print. To subscribe, please visit www.pinotreport.com, or see the order form on the next page. Our tastings are done under controlled, consistent conditions. We do not under any circumstances use tasting notes from large tasting events or other sub-optimal tasting venues in our published, scored tasting reports. Wine Prices and Sourcing Wine prices vary all around the country and can often vary significantly within the same city. We make every effort to only publish a winery’s suggested retail price. This price in some cases will be higher than those you can find in your local markets. The wines we taste either come from the wineries in the form of tasting samples (always finished bottles ready for market) or wines we purchase at retail or at the winery. Editorial Philosophy PinotReport is an independent newsletter owned, written and published by Greg Walter. All tastings unless otherwise noted are done blind by the Editor. Any and all opinions and analysis expressed in these pages unless otherwise noted belong to Greg Walter, who has no financial involvement or connection whatsoever in the production, distribution or sales of wine. Wine Samples PinotReport accepts wine samples for use in its general “In The Market” new releases tastings as well as its special tasting reports. Please follow these guidelines for submitting wine samples for review. 1. All samples should be fully finished bottles ready for market. 2. Please submit one bottle of each wine. 3. Each wine submitted should include a data sheet with at minimum the suggested retail price, case production and distribution data. To submit samples, please visit the PinotReport website for details. Our Wine Ratings The wines we taste are rated using a 100-point rating system. We fully understand the ongoing debate over the use of the 100-point system and while we respect the right of those who simply despise the system to continue to do so, we believe that the scale has value when used with the accompanying tasting notes as a relative guide to wine quality that has the added benefit of being familiar and truly intuitive for most consumers. PinotReport’s 100-Point Scale 96-100 90-95 86-89 80-85 60-79 50-59 About Our Tastings Generally, there are two types of tastings that appear in each issue of PinotReport. The first are our regular “In The Market” tastings of Pinot Noirs new on the market. The second are our special “Tasting Reports” where we from time to time focus on a particular appellation, producer or style. PinotReport / Issue #106 21 SUPERIOR; it doesn’t get better.
