Principal’s Message
The month of September has quickly passed. Our staff and students have been
learning together to support the learning needs of our students.
As a school, we are working on the following goals:
In Mathema cs: For every strand in Mathema cs, students will improve 1 levels from
the diagnos c to the summa ve task.
In Reading: We are focused on Summary and Retelling skills. Our goal is that by the
end of October 15% of students will be at or above expected reading level.
In Wri ng: All students will increase 1 level from the common diagnos c assessment
to the common summa ve assessment. Grade‐like teams will use common forms of
wri ng. Our focus on the traits of wri ng include organiza on, ideas and fluency.
Our EQAO scores in Grades 3 & Grade 6 have been released. We are using the data to
see where we can be er support our students and their learning. We con nued to
make growth in Mathema cs in both Grades 3 and 6. Results indicated that we need
to con nue to focus on Wri ng, Reading and Mathema cs.
Our QSP Fundraiser has begun. This year the sales of our QSP will be used to offset the
cost of Scien sts in the School and any remaining money will be put towards the cost
of trips and student workshops.
S.C.C. Elec ons were held and we have a great group of commi ed individuals who are
looking forward to a great year of learning. Our S.C.C. Execu ve this year is:
Chairperson: Crystal Keiller‐Vardy
Vice Chairperson: Donna Arsenault
Secretary: Mandie Stewart
Treasurer: Karen Pender
Teacher Rep: Todd Smart
Non‐teaching Rep: Sharon Agnew
Community Rep: Amy McQuaid England
We encourage all members of our school community to par cipate in the SCC to help
support our school goals. Our next mee ng
is Wednesday, October 26th at 3:30.
The staff of Dr. C.F. Cannon wish
everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!

Islamic History Month On October 25, 2007, the Parliament of Canada officially declared October as Islamic History Month in Canada. The goal of this

educators will con nue to see themselves represented in the curriculum, classroom, and school community.

Yom Kippur Yom Kippur means “Day of Atonement” and refers to the annual Jewish observance of fas ng, prayer and repentance. On Yom
Kippur, Jewish people reflect on their lives, ask for forgiveness from family and friends and take steps toward improvement. Jewish
people will a end five religious services over the course of Yom Kippur. As part of the High Holidays, which also includes Rosh
Hashanah (the Jewish New Year), Yom Kippur is considered the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Yom Kippur falls 10 days a er
Rosh Hashanah on the 10th of Tishrei, which is a Hebrew month that correlates with September or October on the secular calendar.
A er Yom Kippur, prepara on begins for the next holiday, Sukkot.

Interna onal Day of the Eradica on of Poverty The observance of the Interna onal Day for the Eradica on of Poverty can be traced back to October 17,1987. The theme for this
year is “Moving from humilia on and exclusion to par cipa on: Ending poverty in all its forms,” to highlight the social, emo onal,
psychological aspects of poverty that affect people’s lives and their human dignity. By looking at the mul dimensional aspects of
poverty, it is hoped that a greater awareness and understanding will be brought to the issue.
Poverty Youth Strategy (Research Partnership with Brock University) – During the month of October, the Durham District School
Board will begin a research partnership with Brock University at three Secondary School sites (Brock H.S., G.L. Roberts CVI, and Pine
Ridge S.S). The research will take on a narra ve inquiry approach where par cipants (students, administrators, parents, and
teachers) will share their experiences on the impacts of poverty. Through this research methodology, theore cal
conceptualiza ons will arise to inform the Durham District School Board’s Youth Strategy.

Shapes are all around us! Children who can recognize and iden fy different shapes and spa al rela onships in their
environment will be be er prepared for our school wide geometry focus this month at Dr. C.F. Cannon.
What are the names of various shapes? When talking and playing with your child, iden fy things by their shape and
size. “Please take the largest cereal box out of the cupboard.” “Please pass me the cylinder salt container.”
Ask your child to look for two‐dimensional shapes, such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. Look for
street signs that are different shapes.
Looking for three‐dimensional objects, such as cubes, cones, spheres, prisms, pyramids, and cylinders. How is a
juice box like a rectangular prism?
Games that you can play.
Play “I SPY” asking to iden fy an object when you say, “I spy something that is round,” “I spy something that is shaped
like a cube.”
Look at a picture from a book or magazine. Examine the different shapes that you can find.
Sort capital le ers according to where they have one or two lines of symmetry
Building ac vi es help children think about how certain shapes keep things from falling down.
Geometry is all around us. Have fun exploring!
