USDESEA football competition for 1969 has ended and none of
the seven conferences had to settle for a co-championship.
Stars & Stripes high school files are rather incomplete before
1964, but this was the first season in the 1964-69 interim that at least
one of the conferences did not end in a deadlock.
The record shows Frankfurt (5-0) winning the Blue Division,
Heidelberg (4-1) copping Red laurels, Berlin (4-1) the class of the
Silver competitors, Karlsruhe (4-1) topping Gold play Madrid
(4-0) dominating Spain action, Vicenza (4-0) ruling the Italy roost
and London (4-0) atop the U.K. standings.
Frankfurt, Madrid, Vicenza and London compiled undefeated,
untied records in their respective conferences and all four have
won or shared their league crowns for at least three yearsMadrid's skein stretches through five campaigns. Frankfurt takes
the longest unblemished conference mark—14 games—into next
year. The Eagles also take the longest win skein (six games) in
all-games competition into 1970. They must have established some
kind of & record by losing their first game and winding up with
six straight wins for the third straight year.
Just imagine how tough the Eagles would be if coach Don
Drakulich could get away from that first-game hex.
Three conferences showed teams sharing the laurels in 1968,
two had ties in 1966 and one deadlock existed when the 1967, 1965
and 1964 shoulder pads, helmets and uniforms were stashed away.
