Northern Utah Music Alliance Music In The Mountains LOGO CONTEST See Page 2 for more information Issue #4, August 2002 by Stephen Peterson *excerpts from boomshanka.com The Northern Utah Music Alliance presents San Francisco’s Funk ‘n’ Roll band, Boomshanka, Friday, August 23rd at The Eagles Lodge, 170 West 900 North Logan. Doors open at 7:30 pm. Music begins at 8:30 p.m. Admission is $6 at the door. Logans Ultimate party band, Eggs Blackstone, will open the show. Boomshanka is a seven piece outfit that can put the boogie in your butt and funk it up all night long. Mike Pitre, on trumpet, is the latest member to join the band that includes some of today’s finest jam band musicians. Caesar Mercado, Saxaphone, along with Pitre, blow a jazz influenced layer of melody over the top of groove meisters, Mike Warrington on Bass guitar and Spencer Raymond on the Drum kit. Wade Larsen complements the horn sound with his electrifying keyboards, playing both Fender Rhodes and Organ. Sean Leahy on Guitar and Vocals keeps the rock, funk party rolling with his incredible lead work. Lead Vocals and Guitar come by the way of Ryan Smith who leads this Funky Army into battle each night. *Boomshanka knows how to throw a party. Over the years this 7-piece Bay Area band has been involved in many of the great ones. Whether it's headlining their own soiree or kicking things off for such diverse acts as Los Lobos, Rebirth Brass Band or Les Claypool, Boomshanka delivers the goods. *The band first got together in '98 and have been creating their infectious brand of "funk 'n roll" ever since. Blending elements of rock, funk, and r&b, Boomshanka creates a sound that gets audiences moving. Their tight musicianship, solid songwriting, and increasingly loyal fan-base have led to packed performances at many of San Francisco's legendary venues such as the Fillmore, the Warfield, and the Great American Music Hall. W h i l e achieving great local success, it was obvious that the boys needed to hit the road and spread their unique brand of funk. They spent the better part of 2001 traveling throughout the western states.* Boomshanka has kept the party bus rolling through 2002 by traveling from coast to coast and recently playing the “High Sierra Music Festival” on the 4th of July. All of this hard work shows just how much Boomshanka loves what they do, and it's paying off. With a rapidly growing mailing list and strong buzz in the western states, the future looks bright. More importantly it left the boys even more determined that there is much, much more to be done, and that the party has only just begun. * It is now Logans’ chance to experience the Boomshanka party and dance our butts off! MOUNTAIN ROADIE REPORT Salt Lake Citys 1st Annual Blues Fest On July 13th, the Gallivan Center, in downtown Salt Lake City, played host to the first annual Salt Lake Blues Festival. We arrived late, at around 5:30 in the afternoon, but not too late to bake in the one hundred plus temperatures at the edge of the desert. Unfortunately for us, we had already missed some great local bands. “Ides of March” had started off the show, followed by “Uptown Hustlers” and “Blues on First”. Despite the extreme heat, Zach Parrish and his band were already tearing through their set when we arrived. Zach has an extremely flamboyant stage presence, backed by his sizzling guitar talent. During his set, Zach made reference to a recent, not so flattering, article in the City Weekly about himself. He responded to the article publicly by heating up the stage even more with his rendition of “Born to Ride” (referring to his planned move to Austin, Texas)! If you haven’t seen Zach Parrish, I suggest you get to one of his shows before he leaves town. This was my first visit to the Gallivan Center but I certainly hope that it won’t be my last. Not only is this a great acoustic venue but it has a very nice ambiance. Nestled in the heart of downtown, this park has everything needed for a musical festival setting: beautifully manicured gardens set along cobblestone walkways, a wading pool, nice shaded grassy areas and, best of all on a hot summer day, a walk-through fountain flowing from vine covered trellises overhead. This fine park and the fresh blues made for a great way to melt away one of the hottest dog days of summer. After the long awaited passing of the scorching sun behind the One Utah Building, it didn’t take long for Harry Lee and the Back Alley Blues Band to fill the dance floor. Harry Lee and his band have been performing locally for as long as I can remember. A tight band of skilled musicians, they consistently put on a great show. These guys are another one of my local favorites. It brought a big smile to my face to U Should Know Matthew Moon by Kelly Bair see Harry handing out harmonicas to the little kids after his set. One of the best perks of a festival is the sharing of music among all ages. I’m sure the gracious gifts from Harry will not soon be forgotten by the kids, or their parents. The last act up, along with the crescent moon, was Maurice John Vaughn and an all-star band out of Chicago. After a few songs, Miss Velvet McNair joined Maurice and the band. This woman has a voice like few others, with wide range, and beautiful tones. In the soft warm breeze of the evening, the dance floor began to swell beyond itself onto the next layer of grass. B. J. Emery, on his growling slide trombone, made even those who remained seated sway from side to side. The evening ended with a beautiful version of “Proud Mary” sung by Miss Velvet McNair. If you closed your eyes, the song and the soft evening breeze made you feel as if you were there, “rolling, rolling on the river boat queen”. This festival was one of the best things I have seen happen downtown, for young and old alike. I would like to thank the Gallivan Center, John Paul of the Dead Goat Saloon, the musicians, and all those involved for a remarkable first Salt Lake City Blues Festival! by Stephen Peterson *courtesy of www.matthewmoon.com Matthew Moon is one of the most gracious and all around good guys in rock A little ditty about the wonderful things that a loving couple can do with a jar ‘n’ roll today. Welcome to the world of NOVA PARADISO Nova Paradiso is a 10-piece band which sounds like a musical tour throughout the globe. Moving from exotic Mideastern dance sounds to hard grooving American funk, Nova has an earthy, yet sophisticated sound. Hailing from the shores of the salty lake in the exotic state of Utah, the band presents diverse musical colors, an elaborate decor, exuberant performers and an intense, yet inviting atmosphere. The band has existed for nearly two years and their recently released debut CD, Mantis Recipe, received the following description: “Nova Paradiso distills their swank brew of every music worth knowing, twists it into exotic balloon animals with Zappa-esque flair, and hoodwinks the masses into believing it’s simply safe Latin-flavored dance music.” Their intricate compositions blend gypsy, African, Latin, funk, klezmer, soukous, jazz, zydeco and groove influences. Nova Paradiso consists of the following musicians: Debora Wrathall (violin, vocals), Dale Lee (saxophones, keys, trumpet, accordion) , Wayne Burdick (percussion, marimba, xylophone) , Dave Chisholm (trumpet) Tara Duff (lead vocalist, lyricist), Ralph Mason (guitars), Benjamin Johnson (acoustic, electric bass), Luminado (drums), Lorena Ponce De Leon (vocals), Joseph Chisholm (trombone, vocals, contortion). This is one of the most original and at the same time odd sounding bands that you will have the good fortune of hearing. Their style of music will keep you guessing all night long, while you are dancing to their crazy rhythms. While listening to Mantis Recipe, you may feel at times like laughing at loud, as you would on nitrous oxide, to the sheer from l. to r.: Wayne Burdick, Dale Lee, Tara Duff, Benjamin Johnson, Lorena Ponce De Leon, Joseph Chisholm, Luminado, Debora Wrathall, Ralph Mason, Dave Chisholm musical genius that this band portrays. A very wild, intoxicating sound that will make you smile, dance and get in touch with that little paradise inside your mind. You can check out Nova Paradiso this month in Utah on the following dates: Saturday, August 3rd at The Zephyr, SLC, 10pm - 1am, Wednesday, August 7th at Liquid Joes, SLC, 10 pm - 1 am, Saturday, August 17th at The Park City Jazz Festival, Park City (at the top of Main st.) 4:30 - 5:30 pm. You can find out more about the band at www.novaparadiso.com MAKTUB The New Soul Revolution Maktub delivers pure SOUL all the way through Khronos. You feel the room and the crunch of vintage instruments. You nearly see the players sweat as you listen to them pour their passions to tape. The songs are about matters of the heart, our modern experience with the quickening of time, and patience for those that miss it all. Reggie Watts, known within music circles as an agile improviser and powerful singer, commandingly fronts the band with a soulful baritone. Most often compared with Marvin Gaye and Al Green, Watts's style also reveals the influences of Chris Cornell and Robert Plant. Reggie's soulful baritone and wild creativity have earned him the title "soul technician". Maktub will be on tour in Oregon and California in August. Make sure you catch this soul machine band when they make it out to Utah. To find out more about the band, you can check ‘em out at www.maktub.com. TOP 5 Katie Greenwood Maktub is l. to r.: Kevin Goldman (bass guitar & samples); Thaddeus Turner (acoustic & electric guitar, sitar guitar, talkbox, background vocals); Reggie Watts (lead vocals, synthesizer, lyrics); Daniel Spils (hammond B3, fender rhodes, synthesizers, background vocals); Davis Martin (drums) This past month, I was able to catch Maktub’s live show at Denvers LoDo Music Fest. They had a great sound that caught my ear and got me swaying to their groovy style. I requested a press kit from them and they sent along a copy of their latest disc “Khronos”, which is a fantastic collection of new school soul with an old school feel. Maktub (pronounced mock-tube) is arabic for “Let it be written”. Hailing from Seattle, WA, Maktub was voted by “The Seattle Weekly” readers as best local band of 2002. *Khronos (produced by Steve Fisk) features 11 new soul-drenched and raw cuts. With Khronos, Maktub has created an album which spans time - a perfect blend of classic Soul brought to bear with modern influences. The music itself combines new music technology - synthesizers, electric drums, sitar guitar and plenty of sampled sounds - mixed with the classic sounds of the Hammond B3 organ, Fender Rhodes piano, acoustic drums, guitar talkbox, and Reggie Watts's trademark 1950's modified telephone mic referred to as the Regg-a-phone. The front half of the album explores soul, pop and the up-tempo tunes which fuel much of Maktub's scorching live shows. The second half settles into the darker side of Maktub's unique brand of psychedelic soul rock.
