For the most direct route, see "Driving Directions" below. From the North on I-95 If you're driving into Florida along the east coast,St. Augustine—the nation's oldest city—can make for a marvelous day of shopping. Take exit 318 from I-95 onto State Road 16 to US 1 South. Your first stop should be the St. Augustine Visitor Information Center where you'll pick up information on the area's attractions, museums and more. The Colonial Spanish Quarter is a living museum with costumed interpreters illustrating the lives of Spanish soldiers circa 1740. See them ply their trades: blacksmithing, candle-making, carpentry and more. Continuing south on I-95... Daytona Beach is home to the Daytona 500 and famous springtime celebrations. Its 23 miles of smooth-sand beaches boast some of the best surfing on the East Coast, and the "strip" offers more than just souvenir T-shirts. The Daytona International Speedway, besides being home to one of the most famous NASCAR events of the year, houses an interactive motorsports attraction that includes the Richard Petty Driving Experience Ride Along Program which takes you around the track three times at speeds of up to 150 mph. Continuing south on I-95... Cape Canaveral is home to the Kennedy Space Center. The tours and exhibits are open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily except Christmas Day. Explore the history of the NASA space program, and view the actual consoles from early versions of Mission Control. An IMAX experience takes you on a journey into space, and you can visit an observatory to get an unobstructed bird's-eye view of the shuttle launch platform. From the North on I-75 Home to Florida's state university, Gainesville is a small town rich in history, intellect, culture and more. The University of Florida campus is worth a visit; the shores of Lake Alice are good for strolling and looking for the college mascot, the ‘Gator. Continuing south on I-75... Tampa Bay is the big city on the "West Coast." Beaches, aquariums, theme parks and major league sports all draw visitors to the area. Busch Gardens is a full-day adventure, with roller coasters and all the traditional amusement park fare as well as over 2,700 animals in one of the nation's premier zoos. Across the bay is St. Petersburg, from whose spectacular beaches you can watch the sun set over the water. The Salvador Dali Museum houses the most comprehensive collection of its type in the world. Phone 727-823-3767 to find out what special events are going on while you're in town. Drive east on I-4 ... Lakeland is a picturesque city with a rich heritage. The campus of Florida Southern College contains the world's largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright-designed buildings. From the South A truly international city, Miami is the gateway to Latin America. You'll hear Spanish spoken here almost as often as English, and even the local newspaper prints two separate language editions. Driving north on the Florida Turnpike... You'll drive parallel to I-95 for the first hour and a half. Until you reach Fort Pierce, almost any drive east will take you to a beach. Take note of the Intracoastal Waterway, the in-land water route that extends from Norfolk, Virginia, all the way to Key West. ____________________________________________________________________ Driving Directions From Orlando International Airport (MCO): Take Toll Road 417 South to I-4 and merge onto I-4 West toward Tampa.
