Miss Skouroumounis’ Year 3/4 First Fleet History Topic
Last term our main theme was learning about the First Fleet. In Resource Based Learning
we were given questions to research by Mrs Zajac. We worked in teams and learnt how to
email our answers. Did you know that none of the first convicts sent to Australia were
murderers? There were eleven ships that sailed in the First Fleet and six contained convicts.
In Visual Arts we painted convicts. We then found the names of convicts who were aboard
the First Fleet and researched some reasons why they became convicts. We also painted the
First Fleet.

We researched the impact the settlers had on
Indigenous Australians and what types of jobs
these settlers did once they arrived here.
We painted this as well.

School News
From The Principal
Welcome back! It’s hard to believe that we are
already half way through the year. This term is
shaping up to be another huge term with our 60th
Birthday
Celebration,
Festival
of
Music
performance, Book Week, Arbury Park Camp and
Port Power visits just to name a few of the events.
Next week we will be sending home information
about our school camp in week 9. Parents and
caregivers will have lots of questions and we will
endeavour to provide as much information as
possible. We will also be organising an
information session for parents. If you have
questions or concerns, please approach any staff
member and they will be able to help.
I’m happy to unveil our school logo.
We will gradually start replacing our school
stationery and signage with the new logo. We are
also looking at introducing a new school polo top
which will have our new logo on it. We hope to
have it available before the end of the year.
Our Vacation Care program was a huge success.
We managed to fully book out a number of days.
As the program grows it will be important for
parents to book in early to avoid missing out.

From The Senior Leader
It has been a great start to the term. The students
are all participating in the Getting Started program
which is about countering bullying. Enfield Primary
has some clear guidelines in dealing with bullying.
The definition of bullying is:
Bullying is repeated verbal, physical, social or
psychological behaviour that is harmful and
involves the misuse of power by an individual or
group towards one or more persons. Cyber
bullying refers to bullying through information and
communication technologies.
Conflict or fights between equals and single
incidents are not defined as bullying.
Enfield Primary deals with bullying in the following
way:
 Investigate reported incidents of bullying and
use restorative justice methodology to deal with
issues.
 Contact parents if bullying or harassment is
repeated and inform them of action taken by
the school.
 Give
consequences
to
students
who
bully/harass others. These consequences may
be time out, restricted play, take home or
suspension.
As a parent you can help your child by:
1. Listening to their story
2. Get the facts
3. Recognise & validate their feelings (anger,
fear & sadness are common)
4. Give them some common coping skills &
defence mechanisms:
Look for some simple ways to help them handle
the bullying such as making sure they stay in
pairs, practising a comeback line or even walking
and talking confidently.
5. Get the school involved: If your child
continues to struggle with bullying contact the
school. Resist the temptation to confront
suspected bullies, or their families. Teachers
generally have very practical, tried and true ways
to tackle bullying.
6. Help build your child’s support networks &
their self-confidence
(parent strategies are from Parenting ideas
website. The article that contains these
strategies is written by Michael Grose)

Library News
Welcome back to term 3! The Library has some
exciting things happening this term with book
week coming up in week 7. Book week is a time
to celebrate reading and our love of books so
watch this space in the coming weeks for more
information on what exciting activities will be
happening in book week.
Term 3 is also the last term to complete the
Premiers Reading Challenge. All students need to
have read their 12 books for the
challenge by the 6th of September
week 7. Results and awards can be
organised for term 4.
At the beginning of every term we hope that
students can come straight into the library and
begin to borrow books for their
reading. This is difficult for some
students who still have not returned
their books from the previous term!
Students are encouraged to return
all books at the end of each term.
We are seeing more and more
students misplacing books over the holidays and
this limits them to how many books they can
borrow and disadvantages their learning. Please,
If your child has books still out on loan to them,
please help them look for them at home. While
every effort is made in the library and in classes to
look for missing books, students often need a little
help at home to look for them properly.

Leading up to flu season we want to boost
immune systems with foods which are high in
protein, iron, zinc and vitamin C.
Flu Season comes around every year, hitting hard
and fast with unpleasant symptoms like coughing,
sneezing body aches and fever.
In schools, the flu virus can spread
quickly and before you know it
students, staff and parents are
sick.
The key to beating cold and flu is knowing the
right vitamins and minerals to include in meals.
Boost immune systems with foods which are high
in protein, iron, zinc and vitamin C. This might
include red meat, eggs poultry,
non skim dairy products and of
course all the citrus fruits as well
as kiwi fruit, strawberries and
rockmelon.
When we’re sick we look for those warming
comfort foods like soups and casseroles, but it’s
still important to keep protecting ourselves with
the right foods even when well.
Chicken soup is a good option as
chicken stocks made from the bones
contain antibiotic properties which help
to relieve cold and flu symptoms.
Fruits like strawberries, oranges and grapefruit
contain high levels of Vitamin C which helps to
destroy viruses, aid iron absorption, promote cell
healing and neutralise free radicals
in the body. Mixing these antioxidant
rich fruits into smoothies or salads
will help to fight the nasties.
Vegetables and legumes also pack a punch,
Broccoli, sweet potato, spinach, and garlic are
packed with iron. To retain the maximum level of
vitamins and minerals, it’s important
not to overcook vegetables and to
ensure that once they’ve been
chopped they are either used
immediately or refrigerated to
reduce air exposure.
As well as eating healthy it is
important to exercise and keep
active with healthy activities to
maintain overall health.
Lastly be sure to let yourself rest and
get enough sleep for bodies to
recover.
