Greetings Future Harriet Tubman Families Did You Know? Harriet

Greetings Future Harriet Tubman Families
It is with great enthusiasm that I will be returning to
downtown St. Catharines as the first principal of Harriet
Tubman Public School.
As many of you know, I am no stranger to downtown having
been the principal at Alexandra, Maywood, Queen Mary and
now Memorial.
I am coming to the new school with many experiences in
education. I was a secondary school teacher at Beamsville
and Grimsby high schools early in my career, but made the
switch to being an elementary teacher in 1997. I was an
intermediate teacher at Central School and then the grade 8
homeroom teacher in the Gifted Education Centre at Queen
Mary School.
From here, my administrative career began, and I have
worked at Oakridge and Simcoe Street schools as viceprincipal before becoming principal at Crystal Beach. I was
then at Alexandra, Maywood and Queen Mary before my last
move to Dalewood for the transition to a full French
Immersion school.
Working with the current downtown school principals, the
transition team and staffs, we have planned a series of events
during this transition year.
We have already:
 supported Terry Fox with a combined school walk
and fundraiser
 handed out new Harriet Tubman t-shirts
 brought our junior and intermediate students
together for a Social Media Safety presentation with
Paul Davis
 held a parent Social Media Safety presentation
Our future plans include:
 final selection of the North Star Name (see back)
 Niagara Falls Art Gallery oil pastel renderings of the
schools for all students
 Curriculum connections to Harriet Tubman during
Black History Month
 A joint School Council Meeting combining all three
schools
Looking forward to meeting you all!
Sincerely,
Ronna Lockyer
Did You Know?

Harriet Tubman did not have a map for the journey
to Canada. Instead she and others on the
Underground Railroad relied on the North Star to
lead to freedom in Canada.
 Homes that provided a safe stop on the
Underground Railroad would display blue quilts to
indicate to the slaves that the house was safe.
These pieces of historical information were used when
choosing our new team name and school colours.
Harriet Tubman Construction UPDATE
The construction webcam is live and can be accessed through
www. harriettubman.dsbn.org or on the Alexandra,
Maywood, Memorial or QM websites.
 Mason work on first floor complete
 Core Slab for second floor installed
 Electrical/Plumbing rough ins in progress
 New Water service has been installed (that's why
there is a fire hydrant in the parking lot now!).
With respect to the City of St Catharines work on George
Street, the City is replacing storm sewers followed by the
installation of a new watermain. They expect to be complete
in late fall this year.
