December 31, 2015 at 2:00 pm - Vienna Nursing and Rehabilitation

Let us extend our best wishes for
the holiday season. Christmas is such
a festive time and we want it to be as
warm and memorable for your family
members as possible. Here are a few
suggestions.
•If you bring in decorations for your
loved ones rooms please refrain from
breakable items or candles.
• Some gift suggestions are: slippers, sweaters, (and other clothes),
“goodies”, (diet permitting) perfume, lotions, large print books, CD’s of audio
books or music of choice, CD walk
mans with headphones, large print
word searches, playing cards, magazines of residents interests. Framed
pictures of family and friends are always nice.
Whenever bringing in new clothing, stop by the station and add
them to the inventory sheet. Use a
permanent marker and label all items
with your residents name. If you can
not find a marker or are unable to clearly mark items bring them to the nurses
station, and we will help you. It is the
only way we can keep track of clothes.
If they are not marked we will have
them in lost and found in the laundry. If
they are not claimed, then they are donated to the Good Will. So please
make sure things are clearly marked.
When bringing “goodies” for our
residents, they do not need to be on
our inventory sheets, but it is important
to check with nursing to make sure it is
within the resident’s diet. Please keep
in mind that it needs to be kept in an air
tight container. We also do not want to
encourage giving snacks to other resident’s without checking with the nurse
first.

Ringing in the New Year 2016!
It’s hard to believe that we’ve already had
our turkey and have started our Christmas shopping has gotten underway. Where has 2015
gone? Well before we get to far ahead let’s talk
about the great things hat happened in the month
of November.
We started the month off the month with
our soft serve ice cream social. We had tradition
vanilla flavor with all the toppings. Although we
had many flavors to chose from, the favorite
topping continues to be strawberries. Ice cream
is always good no matter what the weather.
The following day we decided to bake
something with pumpkin. We all agreed on mini
pumpkin muffins. The whole room was filled
with the aroma of pumpkin, making everyone
want to join in on the dessert.
The following week we took time to honor
our veterans. In celebration of their military service we awarded them with certificates of appreciation for their service. We had a pastor close
the awards with a prayer and two young teenage
girls brought in homemade cupcakes. We listed
to familiar patriotic music during the celebration. Some of our gentleman spoke of what
branch they served in as well as what they did
there. We even had one person who served as a
See Bee. Thank you to everyone of our Veteran’s.
The next night we had an evening bingo
with double the prizes. It was the best part of the
game. Some of the big winners took home more
than three dollars.
The next big event we were getting ready
for was our Thanksgiving holiday. We decided
to make centerpieces for the event, however
playing bingo seemed like so much better. We
decided to play for one hour and a half. We had
so much fun! It was much better then making
centerpieces.
There were many families that enjoyed the
holiday meal here with us and their family. Please
join us for our Open House Christmas Party.
Don’t forget to look for upcoming events!
Until Next Month,
Ester De Santiago, ADC CDP

Happy Holidays!
It’s a different world than the one I’ve know.
Cameras that don’t need film, phones that can be
carried with and do so much more than just communicate, computer screens that respond to touch.
Though these things are hardly ever part of my
personal life, I’m bemused by it all.
A science fiction writer once sat that technology would seem like magic to those who don’t
understand it. I know it’s technology, but it still
feel magical to me, With all that seems to be going
wrong with the world, it lifts me to think on how
far we’ve come.
I love to read about all the new discoveries.
The latest issue of popular science has the 100
greatest innovations of the year, they cover everything from aerospace to genetic engineering and
gadgets. I don’t have to know how they work. It’s
enough for me to know what they can do.
I came across an interesting magazine article
about Barbie dolls. Even here in playthings for kids
there's amazing innovation . Mattel is coming out
with “hello Barbie” a version of the doll that can
have conversation with it’s owner. It can ask questions and using voice recognition make replies, A
microphone hidden in Barbie's necklace is activated by pressing and holding down her belt buckle.
Whatever was said would be recorded and sent by
Wi-Fi to a computer server. Their speech recognition software turns the audio signal into a text file.
After analyzing it, the right response is chosen
from thousands or scripted lines. That is sent back
to ‘Hello Barbie’, all in less then a second. Amazing stuff.
I wonder what it would be like for kids to have a
toy that could have conversations with them. The
line between ran and unreal is so blurred at a
young age. Would they think it was another living
person talking to them? Maybe so. But then I had a
favorite teddy bear in childhood and he seemed as
real as anyone around me. As I grew older, I
learned that it was the power If imagination that
made toys seem so real. Even so, that kind of
thinking never completely leaves us, we name our
cars and get angry at inanimate objects as if it’s
their fault when they won’t work. It’s like the
movie “toy story”, we tend to think of them having
a life of their own.
Cruising thought the TC channels, I came on
another movie. Once again, I was too late to catch
the title of it. Richard Dryfuss played the role of a
high school teacher music teacher. It followed his
life through marriage and the birth of his son, the
instruments her taught, his classes on music appreciation, the school shows he arranged. He tried
to work on his own compositions, but there never
seemed time for them.
As he grew older, the school had budget
cuts, and he was forced to retire. Bitter and disappointed at his lack of success, he cleaned out his
office with his wife and grown son. As they were
leaving, he heard music in the auditorium and he
went to investigate. The place was packed with
fellow teachers, students, and friends. An entire
orchestra of musicians he’d taught waited on
stage, and he was asked to direct his own symphonic composition.
That movie touched me. I thought of all
those who came into my life and I hope I’ve done
the same for others.
All My Best,
Jim
• Christmas trees have been sold commercially in the
United States since about 1850.
• In 1979, the National Christmas Tree was not lighted except for the top ornament. This was done in
honor of the American hostages in Iran.
• The tallest living Christmas tree is believed to be
the 122-foot, 91-year-old Douglas fir in the town of
Woodinville, Washington.
• The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree tradition
began in 1933. Franklin Pierce, the 14th president,
brought the Christmas tree tradition to the White
House.
• Christmas trees generally take 6-8 years to mature.
•77 million Christmas trees are planted each year.
• Thomas Edison’s assistants came up with the idea
of electric lights for Christmas trees.
• The best selling trees are Scotch Pine, Douglas Fir,
Fraser Fir, Balsam Fir, and White Pine.
