METROPOLITAN SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PIKE TOWNSHIP Regular Meeting April 28, 2016 The Board of Education of the Metropolitan School District of Pike Township met in a regular session on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the Central Elementary School Cafeteria. Present at the meeting were: Mrs. Randolph, Mrs. Richardson, Mr. Huffine, Mr. Abrams, Mr. Downs, Mr. Metzler, Mrs. Poore, members; and Mr. Jones, Superintendent. Ms. Sarah Dorsey, Communications Officer, presented a district update to the Board. Ms. Dorsey reflected on the following: National Latin Exam Winners We are celebrating all of Pike High School’s Latin scholars. This group had more medalists than any year since our participation in the National Latin Exam in 1993, with one gold medalist, nine silver medalists, and 18 certificate awardees. PHS Receives 4th Consecutive Washington Post Recognition Pike High School was once again ranked as one of the most challenging high schools in the Nation. This is the fourth consecutive year we have made the list. We are ranked 33rd in the state and 1,789 in the country, which is up 99 spots from last year. NASC Sets Food Rescue Food Collection Record In their first week of participating in the Food Rescue Program, New Augusta Public Academy South set a food collection record. PHS to Celebrate National Decision Day Our PHS family will be celebrating National Decision Day tomorrow. They are encouraging all of our students who will be going to a college, university, trade school, vocational school, or the military to participate in the festivities. There will be music, laughter, photos and fun. Students and staff have been encouraged to wear their college gear and photos will be tweeted out using the #reachhigher hashtag. Ms. Amy Dorn, Choir Director at Guion Creek Middle School informed the Board of a grant in the amount of $2,500.00 that her classroom students received from the Pike Township Educational Foundation. The grant will allow her students to perform their first musical, The Lion King, Jr. on Friday, May 13th (7pm) & Saturday, 14th (7pm). After Ms. Dorn’s announcement, the Guion Creek Middle School Choir performed a segment of the play. Mrs. Pat Burton, asked Mr. Andrew Stainbrook, Pike High School Choir Director to the podium. Mr. Stainbrook expressed his appreciation to Superintendent Jones and the Board of Education for recognizing/supporting/encouraging the performing arts. Mr. Kempton explained, “Ms. Jones takes two city buses to get to the bus stop in the district, and then she walks from the city bus stop, to the school where she works.” Ms. Jones expressed her appreciation. Miss Conley, Guion Creek Elementary School Principal honored two of her teachers for their tremendous support and commitment to the students at Guion Creek Elementary School. These ladies go above and beyond the regular classroom duties to support the students of this district. Miss Conley presented the Superintendent’s Above & Beyond Award to Mrs. Paula Kitchen and Mrs. Karen Rabideau. Mr. Raul Rivas, Director of School Facilities & Security joined by Ms. Belvia Gray, representing Umbaugh, presented the Final Blue Ribbon Report to the Board. Minutes of the regular meeting held on April 14, 2016 having been circulated among members of the Board of Education, Mr. Metzler moved: They be approved as written. Mr. Huffine seconded the motion which carried unanimously. The Superintendent recommended the Department of Human Resources Report be approved as presented and placed on file in the office of the Director of Human Resources. Mr. Downs moved: The Superintendent’s recommendation be approved. Mr. Metzler recognized two retirements listed on the Human Resources Report: Janice Glenn and Vic Stewart. Mr. Metzler acknowledged the tremendous service provided to the district by Mrs. Glenn and Mr. Stewart. Mrs. Poore seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. 5 The Superintendent recommended the Bids for the ASC Conference Center be approved as presented and placed on file in the office of the Director of School Facilities & Security. Mr. Downs moved: The Superintendent’s recommendation be approved. Mrs. Richardson seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.
