History of Jacksonville
In 1819, at the north fork of the Mauvaisterre River, Charles Collins and brothers Colonel Seymour
Kellogg and Captain Elisha Kellogg, with their families, set up camp. Their vision was the humble
beginning of Jacksonville, Illinois.
By 1825, the Morgan County surveyor had staked out land at the center of a 160acre tract. Thanks to early settlers Alexander Cox, Joseph Fairfield and George
Hackett, the town square quickly developed. This would later become the
intersection of State Street and Main Street in Jacksonville.
Civil War Monument,
Downtown Square
Education was always a primary concern for city founders. Illinois College was
founded in 1829. The Reverend John M. Ellis, a Presbyterian missionary in the
West, felt the need for a “seminary of learning” in the new state. His plans came
to the attention of a group of Congregational students at Yale University. Seven
of them, in one of the now famous “Yale Bands,” came westward to help
establish the college. As one of the earliest institutions of learning in the
Midwest, the college was named after the state in which it was located. Soon
after came the courthouse, built on the square. In 1834, Jacksonville had the
largest population in the state, outnumbering even Chicago.
Jacksonville’s educational foundation grew stronger with the Illinois School for the Deaf, the School for
the Blind (later Illinois School for the Visually Impaired), the Jacksonville Mental Health and
Developmental Center, and the Illinois Conference Female
Academy (later MacMurray College), in addition to the
public schools. By 1850 Illinois College had conferred
Illinois’ first college degrees and opened the first medical
school in the state. Because of this commitment to
education, many referred to the community as “The Athens
of the West.”
Beginning with Capps Woolen Mills, established in the
1850s, businesses located in Jacksonville because of the
excellent economic climate and convenient access for
transporting goods. Farmers appreciated the fertile soil of
central Illinois, and agriculture enriched the economy as
well. In 1919, the Eli Bridge Company, the world’s oldest
manufacturer of Ferris wheels and other amusement rides,
relocated to the city. Founder W. E. Sullivan introduced
the “Big Elli” wheel on the Jacksonville Square in 1900.
Governor Duncan Mansion
Well-known residents who represented Jacksonville on the national scene included Joseph Duncan,
Richard Yates and Richard Yates, Jr., three Illinois governors; Dr. Greene Vardiman Black, the father of
modern dentistry; and attorneys Stephen Douglas and William Jennings Bryan.
In the mid-1800s, Jacksonville acted as a hub for the Underground Railroad, sheltering hundreds who
wished to escape the horrors of slavery. Several local historic homes served as havens on this journey
to freedom, making Jacksonville one of the first such stations in the area and by far the busiest.
Those who want to learn even more about Jacksonville’s history, the Prairie Land Heritage Museum and
the Governor Duncan Home may contact the Jacksonville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. The
Bureau also has Underground Railroad Tours of Woodlawn Farm and other Underground Railroad
Homes in the community. 217-243-5678, 1-800-593-5678 or www.jacksonvilleil.org.
