Music: what are the
National Curriculum requirements?
Aims
The National Curriculum for music aims to ensure
that all pupils:

historical periods, styles and traditions,
including the works of the great composers
and musicians;
• learn to sing and to use their voices, to create
and compose music on their own and with
others, have the opportunity to learn a musical
instrument and use technology appropriately.
Attainment Targets
By the end of each Key Stage, pupils are
expected to know, apply and understand the
matters, skills and processes specified in the
relevant programme of study. More details of

Premier Ensemble Tasters
From time to time there are opportunities for instrumentalists and vocalists to see what it like to be in
one of our Premier ensembles.
The Tees Valley Youth Choir Open Rehearsal is held in September, so that vocalists can come and see
how they get on, and whether they might like to join one of the foremost youth choirs in the country.
Instrumentalists who have reached a certain standard are invited to rehearse and perform alongside
the Tees Valley Youth Big Band, Brass Band, Orchestra, Wind Orchestra and Yangchin.
‘Tees Valley Youth’ Premier Ensembles
These ensembles are for more advanced students from across the Tees Valley area who audition for
membership. They perform at major venues, both nationally and internationally and are regularly
invited to participate in the National Festival of Music for Youth and the School Prom at the Royal
Albert Hall. For more information, please contact the TVMS - Music Education Hub on (01642)
