Near the Crown Inn at Humshaugh.
From the Crown Inn, walk up the road towards
the Post Office for about 150m and turn right
into Burn Lane (signed Keepershield 11⁄4m).
1 Follow the lane between houses and keep
straight on when it becomes a path. Cross a
footbridge and turn left to walk along the edge
of a field, following the Humshaugh Burn on
your left.
2 At the corner of the field cross a stone stile
and straight across this next field to another
stone stile. Now bear half right, aiming just to
the left of the plantation on the skyline. As you
cross this field there are good views of
Barrasford Quarry on your right.
The corner of the field will come into view.
Head towards this and through the small gate.
Bear slightly left, up to the cottage (Haughton
Pasture) at the top of the field.
3 Cross a wooden stile and pass the front of the
cottage. Keep straight ahead with a drystone
wall on your right until you come to a gateway
and stone stile. Cross the stile and follow a
muddy track to the main Bellingham road.

the traffic, turn right
and in a few metres turn
right again onto a minor road
signed ‘Haughton 1’. Follow this road
for just over a mile (1.7 km), passing
Haughton Castle on the way.

After about 1⁄2 mile (800m), where the road
bears left, look out for a footpath sign
marked Humshaugh 1⁄2 mile . Go through
the kissing gate and follow the direction of
the the sign acros the field to another kissing
gate. Follow the fenceline to go through
another small gate into a small woodland.
Cross a bridge with kissing gate and walk up
the field to another kissing gate. Go through
gate and follow the path between gardens,
through an arch, across a courtyard and out
to the road, back to where you started from.
Walking with wildlife
A group of volunteers from the village of
Humshaugh applied to the Evans Trust to create
the permissive path link around Humshaugh. With
a grant from the Hanson Environment Fund, the
group bought and organised the installation of a
pathway, bridges and gate. The project was
completed in early 2003 and provides an
enjoyable short circuit around the village.

Haughton Castle
This privately
owned castle is
one of the great
houses of
Northumbria. It
was originally built in the 14th century but was
sacked and burnt down in the 16th and
remained a ruin until the 1800s when a west
wing was added. In 1816, the settlement of
Haughton was cleared from the estate and the
park enclosed.
