Take the footpath on your left, signed ‘Humshaugh 1⁄2m’. Then follow directions for Walk 1 from . Great Whittington Humshaugh Walk 3 : Haughton Mains As walk 1 A6 96 B6 1 Turn left, over the bridge, at the fingerpost: ‘Permissive footpath to the War Memorial’. Follow a surfaced path through this wetland area, taking in another, smaller, bridge. This short, flat walk takes you around the east of Humshaugh along a quite lane and back to the village through pleasant pastures. Kirkwhelpington Bellingham . 2 Go through a gate into a field. Turn right and follow the field edge up the field to a stone step stile next to a gate onto the road. Turn left to the War Memorial and then on to the village: take care to keep to the side of road and watch for traffic. Walk 1 : Keepershield Wester Hall Haughton Castle 1 Length: 5.5 km/3 ⁄2 miles Allow: 1 hour 30 mins 4 An easy walk across an old landscape defined by mature trees, ancient hedgerows and drystone walls. Keepershield Haughton Pasture 3 Bus stop outside Crown Inn (Tyne Valley Coaches 01434 602217) The Crown Inn (01434 681231) serves meals and welcomes walkers. Near the Crown Inn at Humshaugh. From the Crown Inn, walk up the road towards the Post Office for about 150m and turn right into Burn Lane (signed Keepershield 11⁄4m). 1 Follow the lane between houses and keep straight on when it becomes a path. Cross a footbridge and turn left to walk along the edge of a field, following the Humshaugh Burn on your left. 2 At the corner of the field cross a stone stile and straight across this next field to another stone stile. Now bear half right, aiming just to the left of the plantation on the skyline. As you cross this field there are good views of Barrasford Quarry on your right. The corner of the field will come into view. Head towards this and through the small gate. Bear slightly left, up to the cottage (Haughton Pasture) at the top of the field. 3 Cross a wooden stile and pass the front of the cottage. Keep straight ahead with a drystone wall on your right until you come to a gateway and stone stile. Cross the stile and follow a muddy track to the main Bellingham road. 4 Taking care of Walk 1 the traffic, turn right and in a few metres turn right again onto a minor road signed ‘Haughton 1’. Follow this road for just over a mile (1.7 km), passing Haughton Castle on the way. 5 After about 1⁄2 mile (800m), where the road bears left, look out for a footpath sign marked Humshaugh 1⁄2 mile . Go through the kissing gate and follow the direction of the the sign acros the field to another kissing gate. Follow the fenceline to go through another small gate into a small woodland. Cross a bridge with kissing gate and walk up the field to another kissing gate. Go through gate and follow the path between gardens, through an arch, across a courtyard and out to the road, back to where you started from. Walking with wildlife A group of volunteers from the village of Humshaugh applied to the Evans Trust to create the permissive path link around Humshaugh. With a grant from the Hanson Environment Fund, the group bought and organised the installation of a pathway, bridges and gate. All rights reserved. Licence number 100042280 Haughton Castle This privately owned castle is one of the great houses of Northumbria. It was originally built in the 14th century but was sacked and burnt down in the 16th and remained a ruin until the 1800s when a west wing was added. In 1816, the settlement of Haughton was cleared from the estate and the park enclosed.
