Reading is a quick way to have fun, relax and get away from it all, taking you in a world of imagination. Through books you learn about new things and also serve to learn new words. Books can be informative, funny, exciting, and scary – anything you want it to be. There is nothing that beats the pleasure of reading a good book! There are so many wonderful books, but how do you know which ones to choose? If you have a brother or sister that is still young, it is best to choose for them books that have illustrations, as the pictures will help them understand more the story that they are reading. You may also choose a story or a poem with repeated phrases. Poems are often short lines with lots of white space on the page. This makes it easy to read and helps you recognise words, which will make it easier for you to read when you come across them again. Always choose books with your favourite stories, and I assure you that this will become one of your best hobbies! DID YOU KNOW? Which is the most book sold ever? According to sales, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens is the best-selling book of all time, selling more than 200 million copies. 3 w e n g n i Makriends f Some of you might be a bit uneasy during the first days at school especially after the long summer holidays. Others might feel worried about their new school, their teachers and the new friends that they might have. Whatever the case, remember that everyone feels a little nervous during the first days but it will all become an every day routine in no time! 4 Making new friends can be one of the most important things to adjust to during your school routine. Follow these tips and soon you will have a long list of new friends… Smile! It may sound like a small thing, but it's huge! One little smile goes a long way. Remember that most of the children at school are feeling just as nervous as you are, and they are looking for a friendly face! Be the first to say hello. When you look people in the eye and say hello, you immediately make them feel more comfortable. Instead of looking away when you catch someone looking at you, look right back at them, smile, and wave or say, Hello. Askowquwehsattiotonss.ay, askuyr aoguer n yo 't kn If you don a question. People have been fascinated by black cats for many years. In fact many years ago cats, including black ones, were much loved and to abandon a cat was considered a very serious crime. It wasn’t until the Middle Ages that black cats started becoming associated with witches. However, in some cultures, the black cat is still considered a symbol of good luck even today. In many Asian countries, owning a black cat is considered lucky. In Scotland, a black cat suddenly appearing on your doorstep is a sign of future wealth and in Japan, black cats are also a sign of good luck. So, a black cat can bring either good or bad luck, depending on the country where it is living! Matthew Spiteri wants to know which is the largest desert… The world’s largest desert is the Sahara, which covers about one third of Africa! Sometimes we feel the effect of this huge desert when strong winds blow from that direction. There are a number of different ways to describe a desert – the original meaning of the word desert is 'an abandoned place' which are typically areas that receive very low amounts of rain. It is good to know that around one third of the Earth's surface is covered in deserts and that only around 20% of the deserts on Earth are covered in sand. Emma Bartolo is curious to know how many bones the human body has We are born with about 300 to 350 bones but as we grow up many of these bones join together and an average adult will end up with a total of 208 bones. More than half (106) of these bones are found in our hands and feet. Did you know that the smallest bone is located in the middle ear? It is called the staples (or stirrup) bone and it is just 3 millimetres long. 7 ! e v i F e m m i G Emily Marie Caru an a Age: 7 Food: Noodles and Chicken Nug Colour: Pink gets Game/Gadget: Nin Wild Animal: Pa tendo 3DS nd Singer: One Dir as ection Julia Sciberras Age: 5 cNuggets eal – Chicken M M y pp Ha d's al Food: McDon Colour: Purple rtoon characters Game: Painting ca ds ar Wild Animal: Leop zzina Be ca lu Singer: Gian Samira Axiak Age: 11 Food: McDonald’s Happy Meal Colour: Turquoise and Purple Game/Gadget: iPad Mini Wild Animal: Pandas Singer: Bridgit Mendler Rachel Sciberras Age: 3 Food: McDonald's Happy Meal – Chicken McNuggets Colour: Pink Game/Gadget: Playing with Play dough Wild Animal: Giraffes Singer: Barney songs Celenia A xiak Age: 7 Cherise Bugeja Age: 6 Food: Chicken breast Colour: Pink Game: Dressing-up games on computer Wild Animal: Elephants Singer: Emmelie de Forest y Meal Food: McDonald’s Happ k Colour: Pin on computer Game/Gadget: Games e Wild Animal: Giraff Singer: Mandy Moore Alessandro Grioli Age: 7 8 Food: Ravioli and McDonald's che ese burger Colour: Orange Game/Gadget: Wii, Nintendo 3DS , Club Penguin Wild Animal: Zebras and Elephan ts Sportsman: Alessandro Matri Martina Balzan Age: 7 Food: Pizza and Pasta w Colour: Pink and yello cards g yin Pla t: ge ad /G Game e aff Wild Animal: Gir ina Singer: Gianluca Bezz Share your favourite things with us and win a Happy Meal voucher TM Jamie Montebello Age: 7 Food: Happy Meal and chicken breasts Colour: Blue Game/Gadget: Playstation, PSP and Hide and seek Wild Animal: Monkeys Singer: Joe Demicoli Matteo Balzan Age: 4 Food: Pasta Colour: Red o DS Game: Nintend osaurs in D : al m Wild Ani leja al C rt Ku r: Singe Kelsey-Marie Cutajar Age: 5 Food: McDonald’s nuggets Colour: Pink Wild Animal: Jaguars Singer: One Direction Ariana Laferla Age: 6 Food: Pasta with ricotta Colour: Pink Game/Gadget: Games on computer Wild Animal: Kangaroos Singer: Rihanna Daniel Parnis Age: 10 Food: Baked pasta and chicken nuggets Colour: Red Game/Gadget: Nintendo Wild Animal: Snow leopards Sportsman: Lionel Messi Daniel Montebello Age: 3 Food: Bread, cheese and Happy Meal Colour: Blue Game/Gadget: Hide and seek, games on computer Wild Animal: Lions Singer: Gianluca Bezzina Julia Cauchi Age: 10 Food: Lasagne, Pasta Carbonara and McC Colour: Pink, Purple hicken and Red Wild Animal: Tiger s Singer: One Direct ion and Bruno Mar s Julie Christelle Vella Age: 5 Food: Chips and nuggets Colour: Pink Game/Gadget: Barbie dolls Wild Animal: Zebras Singer: Gorg u Pawlu Kristy Grech Age: 7 Food: Pizza and Noodles Colour: Blue and Pink Game: Billiards and Hide and seek Wild Animal: Elephants Singer: Emmelie de Forest Katrina Parnis Age: 7 Food: Chicken nuggets and fries Colour: Purple Wild Animal: Polar bears Singer: Gianluca Bezzina To participate in Gimme five use the form on page 15 9 s! e m a G g n li z z u P s ’ d l a n o D Enjoy Ronald Mc COLOUR BY LETTER Match the colours with the letters and colour the cat. 10 A C B F E G H I D RED GREEN BLUE ORANGE PINK YELLOW BROWN BLACK WHITE SPOT THE DIFFERENCE SPOT THE 10 DIFFERENCES IN THESE PICTURES 11 SHARE A SMILE ON McHappy Day McHappy Day is an international event organised globally in all McDonald’s countries in order to collect funds to help children. This craft can be made with egg shells, large seeds (such as pumpkin seeds), rice or any type of pasta! It is so easy to do that even your younger brother or sister can help you! WHAT YOU'LL NEED FOR AN EGGSHELL MOSAIC: • Eggshells • Food colouring • Plastic cups • Construction paper • Liquid glue • Rubber gloves (optional) • Pencil • Paper towels DIRECTIONS: 1. Carefully wash out the eggshells. Remove the thin white skin that clings to the shell. 2. Mix the food colouring with water in the plastic cups. 3. Drop the eggshells in the food colouring. The eggshells will take on a darker shade the longer you leave them in the containers. 4. When the eggshells are coloured, remove them from the containers and place the shells on paper towels to dry. You may want to use gloves for this! 5. When the shells are dry, crumble them into small pieces. 6. Draw a design in pencil first and then cover it with glue. 7. Sprinkle the broken shells on the glue and the design will emerge. Be careful to choose the right colour of eggshells for your design. Be creative and design your own colourful poster 13 CALLING ALL WRITERS! NEW COMPETITION! Create your own book on Happy Studio and win a free Happy Meal!
