Up With People
RYLA: According to all accounts (including our Governor Tom Polito) this
year’s RYLA was a huge success. The 160 sophomores,
over 100 volunteers, and 24 councilors/facilitators had a
great time. Other than our own Kevin Sullivan who spent all
lunch raving about the fantastic food, Saturday evening’s program about bashing
barriers given by Mark Wayshack and Sunday’s emotional story by Queen B as she told
of her life in Tanzania. Thanks to Diana, Christine, Kevin, and Ralph for all their work!
Bedford Pan MA Challenge for Kids: President Christine brought to our attention today that
Jessica’s bank, Northeastern Bank Savings & Loan sponsored virtually all our expenses
for the event (all but $5 that is). They paid for all
the hot dogs, buns, and supplies. Thanks to
them, and to Jessica for all their support!
Speaker Program: Dan Harty joined us today from COVANTA
Energy. They are handeling Bedford’s trash disposal and
recycling program. Their facility is located in Haverhill MA. As
the trash is brought into the facility it is dumped onto the floor of
the building, inspected for compliance with state requirements,
and then bulldozed into a whole. A crane then scoops it out and
dumps it into a furnace where it is burned. As it is burning, water
is passed through the fire producing steam which is then applied
to a steam turbine generator which produces the power consumed by the plant with enough left over
to sell back to the utility companies. Dan told us of the many different ways the trash is collected from
collecting trash and recycling separately to separating the debris right at the plant. COVANTA is also
starting a Mercury recycling effort which will see them paying the Town to buy a storage shed which
will collect discarded Mercury containing devices from Bedford residents and then be transported to a
facility where the Mercury can be safely extracted and disposed of. COVANTA will actually pay
contractors $5 for every Mercury containing device they turn over to them. They are also actively
working on outreach programs to organizations, like Rotary, local schools, and other civic
organizations to inform them of the benefits of recycling.
Happy Dollars: Boy were we happy today! To start us off Steve was happy for his trip to Florida even
though he got soaked several times while touring Universal Studios and Disneyworld – and because
he made up at the Holindale Rotary Club, Then there was Bill who was happy to have started
remodeling his den, Andy will be happy when he takes off on his first boat trip of the season next
week, on the other hand Margarita was happy her baby is starting to crawl around and lift himself up,
Ralph was happy to have Dave Fionda and fellow Pan MA Challenge rider with us today, Dave even
kicked in a few bucks because he was happy to be with us, Winston threw in $5 because he is
traveling to New Mexico to get married to a lady he has actually known for over 30 years (Wow that is
a biggy!), Bob – along with a bunch of others – was happy for Winston and wished him loads of
success, he was also happy and appreciative for the conclusion of Christine’s great year as our
president, Kevin was happy the food was so great at RYLA this past weekend, Jacquelyn was happy
to have trained 300 police officers (wonder what that was about??), Andrea and Lynne were happy for
Winston and Christine, Bob M. was happy for the Red Sox, Christine was thankful for all the support
given to her this past year and for all the club has done in the past 12 months, and finally there was
happy to be heading down to N. Carolina for a beach wedding. What can I say, we’re just a happy
bunch!
