President’s Message As tax season comes to an end, it’s a great time to revisit your finances for the year. Hopefully you’ll be getting a refund and the opportunity to make a decision about how to use or invest that money. Most of us have already felt the impact of the expiring tax cuts and could really use some financial planning. Below are a few ideas on ways to make your refund work for you: • Pay off debt: Use your refund to make your pocketbook a little lighter all year round. When you pay down your debt, eventually you will have more money after every paycheck (and you won’t be paying interest on borrowed money). With savings rates as low as they are in this economy, paying off or down your debt is best before you can start to save. • Invest in necessities: You may have a car that’s on its last leg or need to improve your living situation. Using your refund as a deposit to reduce the amount you borrow on a car or towards a down payment on a house are important investments in your life and well-being. • Save or invest: If you’ve paid down your debt, then you are in a good place to start saving. Ideally, you should set aside enough money for three months of living expenses as your emergency fund. Once you have a good cushion set aside (and untouched!), you should make sure you are saving enough for retirement and increase the amount you are investing. As your Credit Union, we hope to make your life a little easier. Our goal is to offer you loans that make sense financially and save you money. While savings rates continue to be at all time lows in our economy, we are pleased to offer our Members some of the highest deposit rates in the marketplace. Whether you are a borrower or saver (or both!) we are your partner. I hope you find our April newsletter useful and informative. We have moved back to a quarterly newsletter that is now inserted with your statement (or emailed to our Members with eStatements). This change allows us to communicate with you about the Credit Union more often, but in a cost-effective way. Thank you for your continued support of the Credit Union! I wish you and your family a successful year ahead and hope that we can be here for you along the way. Best Regards, Jeffrey A. You must have a login and access to CU OnLine, our online banking, to be able to access Mobile Banking. Visit our website at www.lbsfcu.org for links to apps and more information. Protect Your Account While Online LBS Financial has strong security in place to protect your account but there are also measures you should take to ensure you are protecting your account online. • Strong Passwords: Use a combination of letters, numbers and characters. Don’t use easily guessed passwords like birthdays or your home address. • Protect your Computer: Renew your anti-virus protection each year and make sure it’s always up-to-date. Make sure you have a personal firewall (unless you are running a dial-up connection). Anti-malware software is also helpful for scanning and protecting your computer. If you can’t afford to purchase these at retail, check with your Internet Service Provider (ISP). ISPs often provide free or discounted security software bundles. • Email Safety: Do not email private information. Emails are generally not encrypted. If you need to communicate with the Credit Union about your account, use our secure online forms in the Contact Us section of our main website (www.lbsfcu.org) or send a secure message within CU OnLine (click on Messages in the top right, then “create” a message to the Credit Union). • Sign off and Log Out: Always log out of CU OnLine before closing your browser. From Our Members When I purchased my car last year, I realized I was paying way too much on my interest rate through another lender. I refinanced my loan with LBS and brought down my rate and payments signif icantly! I am so grateful to Mr. Alvarez who assisted us with the application and improved our situation. I have to say that the staff at the Cerritos branch has to be the best in the world! Thank you so much for what you do for the Members. We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful service in the community! -La Nedra (30-year Member) Some Insurance Tips Buying a new car can be both exciting and overwhelming. There's a lot to consider, with a wide range of options, makes, models and features. Then there are financing and car insurance costs. It's a great idea to be prepared before you start shopping, to make the buying process both quicker and easier. Pick the right car for you Before you start test driving, make a list of what you are looking for in a new car. As you are writing the list, think about the same concerns a car insurance company would consider when quoting you a rate, such as: Get a 25% Rebate on Real Estate Fees • How do you use your car? • How many passengers do you typically carry? • How often do you drive your car? • Where do you drive and how many miles? If you are considering buying or selling your home, you might want to take advantage of our new HomeBenefitsPlus Program. LBS Financial has partnered with HomeBenefitsPlus to offer our Members a 25% rebate on their real estate broker’s commission. These factors will help you pinpoint the best car for you, while also helping to keep your car insurance premium down. Consider features before you buy Make a list of all the features and options that are important to you, such as head and leg room, transmission type, engine, trunk size, airbags, security system, anti-lock brakes and other safety features. Car insurance companies often give discounts for some of these items; saving you money on your overall quote. What's the total cost? Before you buy you should always factor in all costs involved with buying a new car, including sticker price, gas, maintenance, financing rates, taxes and car insurance. How much you pay for your car has a powerful effect on your car insurance premium. A luxury car with all the latest safety features will typically cost more to insure than a no-frill economy car, due in part, because the higher-priced car may be more expensive to repair or replace. How Does it Work? 1. Before you select a real estate agent, contact HomeBenefitsPlus by visiting the website at lbsfcu.homebenefitsplus.com or calling 888.603.9563 (let them know you are a Member of LBS Financial Credit Union). 2. One of HomeBenefitsPlus’ Counselors will contact you to discuss your situation and match you based on your real estate needs with a carefully selected, experienced, full-time, professional real estate agent with proven track records of outstanding customer service. Your agent will be an expert on the area where you are selling your home or intending to buy. The Credit Union is working with ABC Unified School District, Bellflower Unified School District and Long Beach Unified School District to select schools for 2013. Each school/district will be providing a wish list of supplies which will be available at our Greater Long Beach area branches and on our website beginning on June 1st. You may also pick up a list at any of our Greater Long Beach area branches. We encourage Members to help us with the school supply drives by reviewing the lists and dropping off supply donations at a branch before August 23, 2013. Last year's program was a great success, thanks to our Members and employees of the Credit Union for their donations to Tracy High School (ABCUSD), Hamilton Middle School (LBUSD) and Bellflower Unified School District. We hope to make a positive impact with our newly adopted schools in 2013 and help them off to a great start of the new school year! 3. At the end of your real estate transaction, you will receive a 25% rebate on the selling or listing side of the real estate commissions. The rebate will be received as a credit in escrow.
