Scholarships Andother Financial Aid ForCollege *At-largeScholarships *Federal&StateFinancialAidSources *WebSites&FundingStrategies Providedbythe BangorHighSchool SchoolCounselingDepartment 2016-2017 INTRODUCTION Parent and Student Information I have prepared this booklet as a service to our students and their parents to help them gain access to information about financial aid. There are four basic types of financial aid: scholarships, grants, work study, and loans. There are many organizations offering student financial aid: federal, state, and local government, colleges and universities, private organizations and businesses, religious affiliations, and branches of the military. This booklet is not to be considered all-inclusive. New scholarship opportunities will become available after the printing of this booklet, and others listed may no longer be available, based on funding and other considerations. Be aware that there are web sites and publications that list thousands of scholarships. I also recommend that students contact the college/university financial aid office to inquire about additional financial aid opportunities. The general guidelines for scholarship applications are described in this booklet. It is recommended that students complete scholarship applications with the utmost care. Many applications will require an application, an “activities resume,” an essay and/or a high school transcript. I suggest that you have another person proof-read the applications before submitting. Grammar, spelling and composition style will be considered when committees make their decisions. Finally, some scholarship applications require letters of recommendation. When asking for a letter of recommendation, be sure to give the person ample time and a formal thank you. Finding money for college takes time and effort! I do not recommend paying anyone or any organization to help you find scholarship money. Be aware of scholarship scams. For more information regarding scholarship scams, visit http://www.ftc.gov/scholarshipscams. I encourage you to take the time to apply for as many scholarships as possible. Feel free to call Mr. Kurschner, School Counselor at 486-5217 if you have any questions. 1 FREE FINANCIAL AID & SCHOLARSHIP SEARCH ENGINE WEBSITES www.collegeboard.com www.studentaid.ed.gov www.fastweb.com www.finaid.org www.collegenet.com www.collegeaidaward.com www.collegescholarships.com/ www.scholarships.com www.findtuition.com www.nacacnet.org www.nasfaa.org www.needalift.org www.srnexpress.com www.entrepreneurU.org www.makingitcount.com/scholarship www.collegeanswer.com www.scholarshipexperts.com www.studentscholarships.org 2 FINANCIAL AID WEBSITES Refer to the web site of the school you will be attending for more scholarship opportunities Minnesota Public UM- Twin Cities Minnesota State University Mankato Winona State http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/CostsAid/finaid.html http://www.mnsu.edu/campushub/programs/ http://www.winona.edu/financialaid/ Wisconsin Public UW- Eau Claire UW- Green Bay UW- La Crosse UW- Madison UW- Milwaukee UW- Oshkosh UW- Parkside UW- Platteville UW- River Falls UW- Stevens Point UW- Stout UW- Superior UW- Whitewater http://www.uwec.edu/FinAid/ http://www.uwgb.edu/bursar/financialAid/index.htm http://www.uwlax.edu/finaid/ http://www.finaid.wisc.edu/ http://www4.uwm.edu/financialaid/ http://www.uwosh.edu/fin_aids/ http://www.uwp.edu/departments/financial.aid/ http://www.uwplatt.edu/finaid/ http://www.uwrf.edu/financial-assistance/ http://www.uwsp.edu/finance/ http://www.uwstout.edu/finaid/ http://www.uwsuper.edu/wb/finaid/ http://www.uww.edu/financialaid/index.php Wisconsin Private Alverno College Beloit College Cardinal Stritch University Carroll University Carthage College Concordia University Edgewood College Lakeland College Lawrence University Marian University Marquette University Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design Milwaukee School of Engineering Mount Mary College Northland College Ripon College St. Norbert College Silver Lake College Viterbo University Wisconsin Lutheran College http://www.alverno.edu/campus_resource/financial_aid.html http://www.beloit.edu/financialaid/ http://stritch.edu/tuition/overview.aspx http://www.cc.edu/prospective/finaid.asp http://carthage.edu/finaid/index.html http://www.cuw.edu/Tools/resources/financial_aid/ http://www.edgewood.edu/prospective/undergraduate/transfer/costs.aspx http://lakeland.edu/finaid/Traday.asp http://lawrence.edu/dept/finaid/ http://marianuniversity.edu/interior.aspx?id=79 http://www.marquette.edu/student/ugrad/financialaid.shtml http://www.miad.edu/content/view/28/169/ http://www.msoe.edu/admission/finance/basics/ http://mtmary.edu/aid.htm http://www.northland.edu/Northland/ProspectiveStudents/FinancialAid/ http://www.ripon.edu/admission/scholarships_aid/ http://www.snc.edu/financialaid/ http://www.sl.edu/finaid/ http://www.viterbo.edu/FinancialAid.aspx http://www.wlc.edu/fa/index.aspx?id=1041 3 GENERAL INFORMATION • Apply for ALL scholarships that you qualify for. • Apply for scholarships with specific career requirements only if it is very likely you will pursue that field. • Make sure you meet the ALL of the requirements of the scholarship you are applying for (including deadlines). • Complete all parts of scholarship requirements. • Carefully read each scholarship requirements and philosophy.
