They will notice you and respond when they are finished talking. Manner #4 - If you need to get somebody’s attention right away, the phrase “excuse me” is the most polite way for you to enter the conversation. Manner #5 - When you have any doubt about doing something, ask permission first. It can save you from many hours of grief later. Manner #6 - The world is not interested in what you dislike. Keep negative opinions to yourself, or between you and your friends, and out of earshot of adults. Manner #7 - Do not comment on the other people’s physical characteristics unless, of course, it’s to compliment them, which is always welcome. Manner #8 - When people ask you how you are, tell them and then ask them how they are. Manner #9 - When you have spent time at your friends house, remember to thank his or her parents for having you over and for the good time you had. Manner #10 - Knock on closed doors-and wait to see if there’s a response-before entering. Manner #11 - When you make a phone call, introduce yourself first and then ask if you can speak with the person you are calling. Manner #12 - Be appreciative and say “thank you” for any gift you receive. In the age of e-mail, a handwritten thank you note can have a powerful effect. Manner #13 - Never use foul language in front of adults. Grown-ups already know all those words, and they find them boring and unpleasant. Manner #14 - Don’t call people mean names. Manner #15 - Do not make fun of anyone for any reason. Teasing shows others you are weak, and ganging up on someone else is cruel. Manner #16 - Even if a play or an assembly is boring, sit through it quietly and pretend that you are interested. The performers and presenters are doing their best. Manner #17 - If you bump into somebody, immediately say “Excuse me.” Manner #18 - Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and don’t pick your nose in public. Manner #19 - As you walk through a door, look to see if you can hold it open for someone else. Manner #20 - If you come across a parent, a teacher, or a neighbor working or something, ask if you can help. If they say “yes”, do so – you may learn something new. Manner #21 - When an adult ask you for a favor, do it without grumbling and with a smile. Manner #22 - When someone helps you, say “thank you.” That person will likely want to help you again. This is especially true with teachers. Manner #23 - Use eating utensils properly. If you are unsure how to do so, ask your parents to teach you or watch what adults do. Manner #24 - Keep a napkin on your lap; use it to wipe your mouth when necessary. Manner #25 - Don’t reach for things at the table; ask to have them passed. 4|P age A College Degree in Every Home by 2020 Santa Ana ¡Adelante! is a partnership between the Santa Ana Unified School District, Santa Ana College,California State University, Fullerton, and University of California, Irvine, ensuring a pathway to college beginning in the 6th grade. At appropriate levels, the instructional program will include language arts (reading, writing, spelling, and grammar), mathematics, social studies, science, physical education, and an elective or exploratory class. Specific information about each class will be available from teachers at Back to School Night and will be available on the Villa website. Homework Villa Fundamental Intermediate School adheres to Santa Ana Unified School District’s Administrative Regulation AR 6170 regarding homework. “The daily amount of time required to do homework will vary depending upon the maturity, abilities, and individual needs of pupils as well as the requirements of the course / subject. Further consideration will be given to the availability of materials needed to complete homework assigned. However, the following schedule represents a minimum amount of time which homework assigned should reasonably require …” Grade Level Sixth grade Minimum time schedule for homework 60 – 90 minutes per day Seventh grade 120 –150 minutes per day Eighth grade 120 –150 minutes per day. Homework is assigned on a regular basis to help the student become self-reliant, work independently, improve skills, master concepts, and complete assigned projects. There are many changes during the transition from elementary to intermediate school. Time management, effort, and the manner of doing homework are some of those critical changes. A daily schedule should be followed to maximize the student’s learning potential. Students are to record all daily, short and long term, assignments in their agenda. If assignments are completed at school, students should review homework, class work, and the Agenda with parents. If work is complete, it is highly recommended that parents schedule one hour of silent reading and / or review basic math facts. Agendas Students are expected to write their homework assignments in their Agenda every day. Students are expected to maintain a complete and neat Agenda. The Agenda is also used as a pass to the Health Office. It is evaluated frequently by all teachers, counselors, and administration during parent conferences. Parents are expected to review their child’s Agenda and homework every evening. Students are expected to bring their Agenda with them whenever they report to any counselor, Assistant Principal, or Principal meeting. Students are not to write in any “graffiti” type lettering in their agendas and may be subject to disciplinary action. Parent / Teacher Conferences Parents are invited to contact the school and request a conference to discuss their child’s academic progress, work habits, attendance, and behavior. The teachers will be glad to meet with you at a mutually convenient time. Please send a note to the teacher or call the school in order to make arrangements for a conference. Whenever a parent/visitor comes to the Villa campus they are to “sign-in” in the front office to receive their visitor’s pass. 26 | P a g e Student Study Teams (SST’s) Parents, teachers, counselors, and/or administrators may request an SST for any student who is struggling academically, requiring interventions, having consistent behavioral problems, or has been placed on probation. An SST is a meeting held with the student, parents, teachers, counselor, and an administrator, as an intervention, to help the student improve his/her academic success at Villa Fundamental Intermediate School. Progress Reports and Semester Grade Reports The school year is divided into two semesters. Students will receive a progress report every six weeks and one semester grade report, each semester. The progress reports indicate growth made towards proficiency on the Common Core State Standards. Citizenship and Work Habit feedback will also be provided. At the end of each semester, final grades will be recorded on the transcript. All grade reports will be mailed to the students’ home address. It is important for parents to notify the school of any changes in address or phone numbers, or if they do not receive progress reports or semester grade reports. Counselors are available to meet with parents regarding the grade reports. The grade provided to students is determined by results from common assessments closely aligned to the Common Core State Standards and other measures. For the academic letter grade, 35% of the grade is comprised of common assessment scores. The remaining 65% is agreed upon by department teams and will be communicated at Back to School Night. The Citizenship Grade is determined by behavior in class including factors such as attention, participation, cooperation, following class rules, attendance and punctuality. Promotion / Retention Villa Fundamental Intermediate School adheres to Santa Ana Unified School District’s specific guidelines concerning promotion and retention. In order to be promoted, a student must demonstrate satisfactory progress towards proficiency as related to the Common Core State Standards. When this happens, the following conditions are in effect: 1. The student is in complete custody of his or her parent or legal guardian during the entire period of suspension. 2. The student may not be on the campus of any school in the Santa Ana Unified School District during school and non-school hours while suspended unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Suspended students may be required to attend the SAUSD Achievement Reinforcement Center (ARC). 3. The student may not return to school from a suspension until a parent or legal guardian has a conference with a school administrator. 4. Students who are suspended may be placed on probation and may be returned to their neighborhood school at the end of the school year. Disciplinary Probation An inherent part of Villa Fundamental Intermediate School is the consistent and active enforcement of the school rules. Prior to being placed on probation, parents will have had communication with teachers, counselors and/ or administrators. A letter to the parent will be sent informing that the student has been placed on probation. School staff and administrators will make every effort to work with both the student and the parent. If significant improvement is not made, the student may be transferred to their neighborhood school at the end of the school year. Probation will be instituted for a school year. Any student placed on probation after Spring Break may continue on probation for the following school year or may be transferred depending on their violation. Those students who have shown improvement will be allowed to remain at Villa. Eighth Grade Incentive Program, 2nd Semester Each spring, the Eighth Grade Incentive Program is consistently implemented, with a progressive discipline plan specifically designed to help the eighth grade students complete the year on a positive and successful note. In the second semester, all eighth grade students will attend an 8th grade assembly where this information will be clearly explained. They will receive a handout which outlines the progressive discipline plan and the privileges and activities which eighth grade students are eligible to attend or may become ineligible to attend if they do not follow the rules of the school. To ensure that parents are aware of this program, parents will be invited to attend an 8th grade parent assembly. Eighth grade students will be given an information packet which will require a parent signature. 30 | P a g e Section V: School Policies Attendance Part of the Villa Fundamental Intermediate School Philosophy is the importance of regular school attendance. Research has proven that regular school attendance is essential to high achievement in school, academic success, and the characteristics of responsible citizenship. Parents play an important role in developing sound attitudes about school attendance and responsible citizenship. Parents are encouraged to work with the school and advocate regular attendance, good citizenship, and high achievement. Presentation and discussion of new material occurs daily during class time. It cannot be made up at home. Parents are requested to consider this when scheduling medical appointments and vacations. If in the event the student has an appointment during school hours, every effort should be made to have the student come to school before and/or after the appointment. Students must maintain regular attendance and attend class on time. Repeated absences and tardiness will initiate an attendance letter, home visit, disciplinary action, and/or a transfer to the child’s neighborhood school. As required by law, the School Attendance Review Board Process (SARB) will be initiated after the third unexcused absence and/or tardy. It is customary for a representative from the District Attorney’s Office to attend these meetings. Attention 2 Attendance **Notes are required for ALL absences and tardies. All notes must be dated, written in ink, signed by the parent or legal guardian listed on the emergency card, have first and last names, and include the dates of and reason for the absence or tardy. Saturday School Program will be assigned to students who repeatedly fail to bring a note. Saturday School Program will be assigned to students with unexcused absences. Students and parents need to allow extra time before school to take care of business at the Attendance Office. Students are still expected to be in class on time, before the tardy bell rings. Students should bring their signed absence note before the beginning of the school period. Tardy When a student is tardy to period one, a note is required. Please remember …A tardy is a tardy!! The note does not excuse the tardy. Students are expected to be on time for every class. Tardy Truant When a student is tardy (30 or more minutes), they are considered to be tardy truant. They must report to the attendance office. The first and second violations result in a central detention. The third violation will result in a referral to an administrator and a Saturday School. Absent When a student is absent, the parent or legal guardian must: CALL (714) 558-5120 / ATTENDANCE OFFICE on the day of the absence. Please make a note of this number. Please do not call the Main Office number for attendance issues. When returning to school, a note is required. Please include the student’s name, I.D. number, and the reason for the absence. Perfect Attendance In order to qualify for yearly perfect attendance, a student may not have any full day or period absences. In addition, the student may have a maximum of one tardy for the entire year. Early Release When a student must leave before the regular release time, a note to the Attendance Office before school or phone call one hour in advance is requested. The parent or legal guardian must sign out their child at the Attendance Office, at the requested time, before leaving campus. 31 | P a g e Make-up Homework Policy Parents may call (714) 558-5120 / Attendance Office to request homework assignments for students absent more than three days. Teachers are allowed twenty-four hours to respond to such requests. Parents may pick up the assignments at the Attendance Office. Students are expected to make up all missed work and tests, regardless of the reason for absence. Any work not made up will count against the academic and citizenship grades. If work is not requested, it is the responsibility of the student to contact each teacher upon returning to school. Teachers are not required to provide make up work for students if the absence was unexcused.
