Parallel hybrid drive technology: the answer for the future
Stricter legislation and environmental requirements
Scissor lifts with hybrid drive technology are the answer to the ever stricter environmental
requirements and legislation and certainly if this concerns soot emissions and fine dust produced by
diesel engines.
The fact that in due course you will not be able to use diesel-driven machines in indoor areas, is only
a matter of time. Diesel drives continue to be interesting for now with regard to outdoor activities as
long as environmental requirements do not become even stricter.
HLI is catering for this with the parallel hybrid scissor lifts with a working height of 16, 19, 22 or 27.5
metres with a combined diesel and electric drive. A 2-in-1 machine that you can use both indoors and
outdoors safely and in an environmentally friendly manner.
The drive delivers the same power as a separate diesel or electrically driven machine in relation to
this modern parallel hybrid scissor lift. A smaller diesel engine in combination with a compacter
electric motor is sufficient to achieve this. The diesel engine will run at the most efficient power level
because of this and will be supplemented by the electric motor during peak demand. This will
guarantee lower soot emissions and a considerably lower fuel consumption.
Economic interests, higher return and lower costs
Holland Lift combines the state-of-the-art with attractive operational costs and a faster return on
investment (ROI).
Firstly, parallel hybrid drive technology ensures higher capacity utilisation thanks to its broader
deployability. The machine can be used both inside and outside and can, therefore, stay on site
during the full construction period. This means that the return on investment of the hybrid is much
faster than with a conventional diesel or electrically driven scissor lift. Instead of investing in two, you
only invest in one machine.
Transport costs will be reduced because the machine stays on site during the full project and there is
no switching between diesel and electric machines. Since the scissor lift is mainly electrically driven,
you will save on fuel costs while you can always use the machine on diesel should there not be a
charging station. The used smaller diesel engine will ensure a 40% lower fuel consumption while
electricity is usually available free at construction sites. No costs have to be incurred either for a soot
filter or its exchange.
The parallel hybrid drive unit of Holland Lift mainly consists of standard components. The hydraulic
system has just as many components as a standard machine without a double drive because one
drive line is used. This makes it easy to maintain the machine. A Holland Lift product, moreover,
always retains a high residual value.

The hybrid scissor lift can be deployed day in and day out because of the minimum emissions during
electrical use. For projects where environmental and noise requirements score highly in a tendering
procedure, deploying the hybrid scissor lift may make the difference.
Advantages when compared to serial hybrid technology
The parallel hybrid drive is characterised by a combined single diesel/electric drive axle in which both
systems work together to drive the hydraulic system. The combustion engine is, therefore, not a
disguised generator in this concept. This in contrast with a serial hybrid drive line where the diesel
and electricity cannot work in combination and, therefore, each require their own drive. More
components, however, are used in relation to this and, therefore, the probability of faults or failures
is higher. Fuel consumption is also higher.
The diesel drive is primarily used for moving items at the outdoor site and during heavy, maximum
load. The electronics will continuously calculate the power requirement so that both drives can be
deployed together. Jointly, they deliver the same power as a separate diesel engine or electric motor
that must be able to provide the maximum power in a serial hybrid drive line. This power sum in a
parallel hybrid drive line makes Holland Lift hybrid technology unprecedented. This revolutionary
alignment of engine and motor power capacities that has been developed by our own Holland Lift
Engineers where standard components are used that strengthen each other through the
sophisticated communication has ensured that the Holland Lift HL-275 H25 was awarded the
“Product of the Year” award.
Since the combustion energy of the diesel engine is not first converted into electrical energy, but
both the engine and the motor are responsible for the drive directly, the load on the batteries is less.
This significantly extends the service life of the batteries when compared to batteries that are used in
serial hybrid machines where the combustion energy is first converted into electrical energy that is,
subsequently, used for the drive. The HL-275 also has its own charging unit to charge the batteries at
night using a plug.


A higher capacity utilisation of the machine (indoor and outdoor use and deployable during
the day and at night)
Savings regarding transport costs because switching between a diesel to an electric machine
is not required
Lower fuel consumption because of the combination of a diesel engine and an electric motor
Longer service life of the batteries than in a serial hybrid drive
Fewer hydraulic parts than with a serial hybrid and, therefore, less probability of faults and
failures
Low maintenance costs because of a robust design and high-quality parts
No contaminating soot emissions and, therefore, a soot filter is not required
Low noise level when the electric motor is deployed
Can always be deployed because both the electric motor and the diesel engine can be used
separately
