COMPARISON CHART
PRACTICE AND APPLY THE SKILL
Answers will vary, but students’ paragraphs
should demonstrate an understanding of the
link between trade and the spread of disease,
and more specifically, the relationship between
ports and disease. Cities by the sea are usually
ports, especially large cities (they are large
because commerce and trade happen there).
Ports welcome ships from many places far
away. Disease-causing organisms may travel
from place to place in or on the sailors, in
fleas on rats, or in the cargo. Wherever
disease-causing organisms meet large groups
of people, outbreaks of disease will occur.
Students’ Comparison Charts should
include examples that reflect the emphasis
on humanism and human achievement
during the Renaissance in comparison with
the emphasis on church and religion during
the Middle Ages. Higher-quality products will
include a greater number of items with more
variety and in-depth detail.
