Measurement Notes

SOL: PS. 1
I. Measurement
A. Scientists use the Metric System
for measurement because:
1. Easy to make conversions since
its based on the number 10
2. It is used worldwide.
B. Types of measurements
Measurement
1. Length
2. Mass
3. Volume(liquid)
Description
Distance
Instrument
Metric Ruler
Basic Unit
meter (m)
amt. of matter
triple-beam balance
gram (g)
amt. of space
graduated cylinder
liter (L)
(Types of measurements cont.)
Measurement
Description
4. Volume(solid)
amt. of space
5. Density
6. Time
Instrument
l x w x h
amt. of matter in a
mass/volume
certain amt. of space
interval
7. Temperature how fast or slow
the particles move
stop watch
thermometer
Basic Unit
cubic meter
(m3)
grams/liter (g/L)
seconds (s)
Celsius (C)
*Mass and weight are not the same:
Mass is determined by matter whereas
Weight is determined by gravity.
C. Water Displacement Method
1. Purpose – to find the volume of
an irregular shaped object
2. Procedure:
a. Find the volume of water
in a graduated cylinder
b. Add the object, then
measure the volume again
c. Subtract the 2
measurements

G. Nanotechnology is the study of
materials at the molecular (atomic)
scale and have allowed for improved
properties of computers, cell
phones, etc.
(A nanometer is one-billionth of a
meter.)
II. Scientific Notation
A. Purpose - to write very
large or
very small numbers
B. Format: M x 10n, where
1. M represents- a number
between 1 and 10
2. n represents - the number
of times you move the decimal
*** if the original number is
less
than 1, then “n” is
negative
C. Scientific Notation Practice
