A letter from the Race Director
Al Wiscovitch
Hello and Welcome to the 18th edition of the San Dimas Stage Race! March 24th, 25th and 26th are going to be an
exciting three days of racing in beautiful Southern California. This is my 12th year as Race Director and this year I
am sharing the Director’s role with Bill McCusker. This is Bill’s 8th year on the race committee and he has proven
to be a versatile and reliable contributor to the race’s success.
While being a Race Director can definitely present its challenges, it is extremely rewarding to watch the all the
hard work, put in months prior to this race, unfold in a time frame of just three days. Everyone on the race
committee gives up considerable amounts of their personal time to put on a professional caliber race. It couldn’t
be done without them. Also, we couldn’t get it done without all the volunteers from the SC VELO cycling club
and all the other amazing volunteers that come out to support us! With that said, I hope that you enjoy your three
days of racing. If you have a chance to speak with a volunteer, please allow them to see your gratitude by simply
thanking them, shaking their hand or giving them a simple high-five. They truly work hard, and I know that your
small gesture of appreciation will go a long way.
The 2017 race will start off with our challenging, yet beautiful Time Trail that consists of climbing up Glendora
Mountain Road. The course is the same as previous years, so come prepared for a good 4.2 mile climb! Heckler
Hill will be returning to us on Day two. This aspect of the race is quite a treat for both the racers and spectators. It
is really neat to watch the riders go by in such close proximity. Day three is our traditional, Historical Downtown
San Dimas Criterium. As always, it is a quick and fast paced 1.2 mile course with six exhilarating corners. It also
makes for a wonderful day of spectating! As a reminder, if you have children with you, don’t forget to bring their
bike for this day! There will be a kid’s race starting at 12:30 P.M where they get to ride on our race course. This
will give them a sense of excitement as they get to experience the exhilaration of racing that their loved one(s)
enjoy so much.
There will be Jerseys up for grabs on all three days! Each category gets to compete for the Green Sprinters Jersey.
There is also a Polka Dot Jersey for you climbers. We also have the highly sought after, Yellow Jersey, which is
also known as, the Leader’s Jersey. In the Men Pro 1 & Women 1, 2 fields, we have the White Jersey. This Jersey
represents the best male and female Pro under the age of 25. The Jerseys are brought to us by Suarez this year so
be sure to check them out on our website!
In closing, I would like to extend a special thanks to our returning, Presenting Sponsor: GMR.Bike. This is their 3rd
year as Presenting Sponsor. Also, we would like to give a huge Thank You to all of our returning and new
sponsors this year. Please take a moment to check them out on our website, sdsr.bike or in the back of our Race
Bible.
Thank you to all participating cyclists! The race wouldn’t be alive without you guys and gals. I hope that this year
you will walk (or ride) away with lots of success, memories and fun.
Good Luck to all of you!

What’s New for 2017
This year’s SDSR is part of USA Cycling’s new American Road Calendar (ARC). In keeping with ARC
requirements, the Women’s Pro category is now Pro, Cat 1 & Cat 2 and the podium cash awards for the
Men’s and Women’s Pro categories have been equalized. This includes the top 5 daily stage finishers,
the top 5 overall G/C finishers, and the overall Green and Polka-dot jersey winners (see Awards Chart
on page 9).
IMPORTANT: Also, under ARC requirements, there will be a mandatory pre-race meeting for the
managers (Director Sportifs, etc.) of teams registered in the Men’s and Women’s Pro categories. The
meeting will be held on Thursday, March 23rd, at 8:00 PM in the San Dimas Senior Center, located at 201
E Bonita Ave (adjacent to the Stage 3 staging area – see map below).
For our Junior racers, the SDSR will again serve as USA Cycling Juniors National ID race, and it will
also be part of the Junior DEVO race series.
The neutral wheel pit for stage 3 will still be adjacent to the Start/Finish line on the north side of Bonita
Ave, but is being expanded because we noticed that it was quite crowded during the Pro races. Only
authorized pit crew will be allowed in this area. The pit area will have barriers on the sidewalk side and
be demarked with tape on the street side. When racers are on the road, pit crew must stay within the pit
area, i.e., not out on the street! No photographers will be allowed in the pit area.
We will have an on-site food concession on Saturday and Sunday provided by Pappas Artisanal Restaurant.
Pappas Artisanal is a New American eatery that’s been open in old town La Verne since 2013. Their chefs are
cyclists that specialize in wood-fired grilling a full range of meats and treats. So bring your appetites to the race.

RACE LOCATIONS
All race locations are an easy ride from any of the San
Dimas hotels. You are encouraged to leave your car at your
hotel and ride to the course.
In the event that a rider is leading in more than one jersey
competition, the rider will wear the jersey with the highest
priority as follows: GC, Sprint, KOM, then U25. If the leader
cannot wear the jersey, the next placed rider must wear the
jersey.
RACE NEUTRALIZATION
Race neutralization is a short-lived stoppage or pausing of a race.
Race neutralizations are used most often in road racing to facilitate
the passing of one race field by another race field.
NUMBERS
Each race packet should contain three racing numbers; two
back numbers and one frame number. If you lose your
number the replacement fee is $15. Numbers may not be
folded, trimmed, or taped. The Frame number shall be
attached to the bicycle frame, between the top and down
tubes, directly behind the head tube. If it is not possible to
secure the number in this location due to frame
configuration, the number should be attached to a bracket or
mount immediately above the rear brake. If no bracket or
suitable mounting point is available immediately above the
rear brake, it is permissible to attach the number to the rear
of the seat (seat rails), with the entire number behind the
seatpost. THE FRAME NUMBER SHALL NOT BE
WRAPPED AROUND THE SEAT POST OR ANY OTHER
FRAME TUBE All numbers MUST be worn at all times,
INCLUDING for the Time Trial. Failure to follow proper
number placement will result in the following penalties:
Why?
USA Cycling Racing Rules state: Taking pace or assistance
from any outside means is forbidden, including holding on
to a motor vehicle or taking pace from riders in a different
race that is concurrently on the same course [relegation or
disqualification].
Keeping in mind that riders in different races may not “take
pace” from those in another race the concept and practice of
neutralizing the slower race has been developed. Very
occasionally the faster race is neutralized to allow the slower
race to finish without interference.
We would rather NOT do race neutralization, however,
with the number of race categories and athletes, it is
necessary to run more than one race on the circuit to
accommodate all those who wish to compete. It is not
unusual for one race to overtake another in this situation.
Without intervention, the races sometimes finish together in
one field distorting the results of both races and making it
difficult, if not impossible, to separate the placing.
1st Offence $20 Fine
2nd Offence $35 Fine
3rd Offence Disqualification
When races combine in this manner, it affects the conduct of
the event and the strategies of the athletes. It does not
provide a fair competition for either race when this occurs.
USAC Permit # 2017-820

3/13/17
GENERAL INFORMATION & PROCEDURES
How?
An official, usually a motorcycle referee, will signal the
neutralization of the slower race by a double sounding of a
whistle (or horn) and/or by raising a red flag or barrage
paddle. The official may also indicate that the riders in the
field should stay to the left or right side of the race course.
4
LICENSE: Racers must present their 2017 USA Cycling
license or an International License from another
federation that is affiliated with UCI. A one-day
beginner license may be purchased for each day of
racing (3 days total) by category 5 women. No
exceptions.
As soon as the neutralization is signaled, the riders in the
field being neutralized should slow and remain behind the
neutralizing vehicle until the neutralization is ended by a
single sounding of a whistle or horn, and/or by
withdrawing the red flag or barrage paddle. The
neutralization is usually terminated when the faster race is
30 seconds to 1 minute ahead of the slower race OR when
the official deems it appropriate.
5
TIME TRIAL SIGN-IN: Picking up the race packet acts
as sign-in for Stage 1. RIDERS MUST PICK UP THEIR
RACE PACKET 30 MINUTES PRIOR TO THEIR
START TIME OR THEY WILL LOSE THEIR
STARTING SPOT AND WILL NOT RACE.
6
HELMETS must be worn and secured as ALL
times while on the bicycle. Make sure your
helmet satisfies the standards specified in USA Cycling
Policies section of the rule book. Helmets must be US
DOT or CPSC certified. If these rules are not observed a
fine and disqualification may result.
Very often, in the case of a small breakaway it is not
necessary to neutralize the breakaway when it is necessary
to neutralize the field. This is the normal practice and may
be an advantage for the breakaway riders.
Rider Conduct
At all times racers should remember that they are
representatives of their sponsors, the USA Cycling, and the
race’s sponsors and conduct themselves appropriately. We
are guests in the communities that allow us to race. Ride as
safely and courteously as possible and do not obstruct
traffic.

San Dimas Stage Race
Mission and History
Mission
Our mission is to host a high caliber 3-day race in Southern California for both amateurs and
professional racers. We strive to attract the best talent possible (numerous National, World, and
Olympic champions have competed here) and provide the best stage possible to showcase that talent.
Locally each year we donate to different local charities and promote events for school children teaching
them important bike safety skills while promoting good health through cycling. We hope SDSR inspires
everyone from kids, to weekend warriors, to full time professionals, to sponsors, to spectators, and to
our army of tireless volunteers.
History of the San Dimas Stage Race
The San Dimas Stage Race was born as the Pomona Valley Stage Race in 2000, a 3-day stage race that
was the brainchild of Rick Thomas. Rick was the then president of SC Velo and the original founder
and owner of SoCalCycling.com - the premier website for Southern California cycling. Rick served as
Race Director for the first two years and carefully nurtured the seeds of the race before relinquishing the
reigns to Paul Hewes. From 2002 to 2003, Paul oversaw a rapid growth in the event that brought it to
national prominence. In 2004 a new race director, Tony Leckie, took over and continued to raise the bar
for our event. After two years, Tony handed the job over to Al Wiscovitch who has been race director
since 2006. Now in his twelfth year as race director, Al is SDSR’s longest tenured director. Al rose
through ranks since first becoming involved in 2000 as a race volunteer. Under his guidance, drive, and
determination, he has cemented SDSR’s reputation as a “must do” race for amateurs and pros alike.
Additionally, Al has sponsored the U25 jersey each and every year through his business AW Pro
Landscaping. His vision for the 18th edition of SDSR is to make the 2017 event the best ever!
